Bonk's Revenge headed to Wii VC

Hardheaded caveman returns to downloadable game service next month, along with three more from the TurboGrafx-16.

Hudson Entertainment has updated its official Virtual Console Web site with news of four TurboGrafx-16 games set for release on the Wii's downloadable game service next month, and the lineup is headed up by Bonk's Revenge.

Bonk's away! Again!
Bonk's away! Again!

The second installment in the character's TG-16 platformer trilogy is also the second Bonk game to arrive on the Virtual Console; the original Bonk's Adventure was available at the system's November 2006 launch. Neither Bonk III: Bonk's Big Adventure nor the shoot-'em-up spin-off Air Zonk have been announced for the Virtual Console.

Accompanying the hypercephalic caveman onto the system will be Namco Bandai Games' Bravoman and Hudson's own Shockman, both side-scrolling action games. Those desiring a slight change of pace can look forward to Battle Lode Runner, a puzzle-action take on the classic series.

Once released, all four games will be sold for 600 Wii points ($6).

Um, there was no Bonk ever for any Sega console. The closest thing, would be Bonk, in Saturn Bomberman. Let's see, there was 3 Bonk's for TG(+ a cd version of the 3rd game), 2 for SNES(2nd one never got released outside Japan), 3 for Gameboy(3rd never got released outside Japan), 1 for NES, 1 for Amiga(called BC Kid), 1 for PS2, 1 for GC, & 1 in the arcade. There's also an RPG which never got released. As for Air Zonk, the 1st one was a hucard game, but the 2nd one(Super Air Zonk) was a cd game.

@LanceJr: perhaps it was released on Genesis/Megadrive in Europe or Aus? There are other countries besides America you know.

I'm pretty sure Air Zonk won't come, it was a CD based game wasn't it?

It's very cool to see the TG16 gettin' some love, as it's one of the more rare consoles in the U.S. and not the easiest system to find games for...

Interesting how BONK was out on the TG-16, and SNES. How could you play it on your SEGA? BIG LIER!

Bonk was a instant classic. I rented it for a my Sega system many times! It was fun and inventive. Lets just hope the translation to the Wii did not ruin the fun like it has on so many other VC games.

To Saphire_Kitsune, it was pretty much the Mario of the Turbografix-16. Wasn't mentioned as much as Mario and Sonic, but it was still pretty good. Shows how much you know about gaming history.

Meh. I might be interested for half that price. Lower the prices and I'll buy some VC games, Nintendo.

The only memory I have of Bonk is playing the SNES version of it on a flight to India on Singapore Airlines. That was in 1997. Five years later, Singapore Airlines got all cheap and I was stuck with playing Game Boy Color games on my flight to India instead. Still, for some reason the opening of that game has stuck with me. Unfortunately, I guess the only way I can play the SNES version (easily) is through emulation.

@Saphire_Kitsune: "Never heard of it, which shows me how popular it was...>>>" Bonk was to the Turbografix-16, what Mario was to Nintendo. If you haven't heard of it, you probably weren't gaming in the early 90's. @darkzerogamer: "The game was released in the late 90's..." Bonk's Revenge was released in 1991, iirc.

@JoeSmith34 You do realise these are really old games and putting them in hi def would not do them any favours? And how would they make more money on the 360? 360 has got its own retro games they are releasing on its platform, and while games for the TG might get released on the 360, I somehow doubt that Nintendo would let their own games released on it, what with them and microsoft being rivals and all.

Mr_Saturn26 - Earth Bound was Mother 2 in Japan. Mother 3 was originally going to be on N64 but was developed for GameBoy Advance and released last year (or 2005 I can't remember off hand). Sadly it looks like that will never be released in the West :( The original Mother appeared on the NES, but again only in Japan. Great to see Bonk on VC - I remember playing them ages ago :) Good to see some of the more obsure titles making it to VC. I wonder if we'll get it in Europe? Now, Earth Bound on VC? I think that'd be a reason to buy Wii on it's own... :D

These games would make a lot more money on the Xbox Live Arcade. And they could be in high-definition and add online play.

I have and still play my TuboGrafx-16, Turbo Duo & Turbo Express systems! These are some of my favorite systems of all time. This is definitely one of the best Bonk games there was. Shockman is pretty cool too. A bit like Hudson's answer to Mega Man. When they release good TG-16 games on the VC, please support them. If we show support they may take an interest in resurrecting some of these lost forgotten gems on the Next Gen systems! :) Bonk on 360 would rock!

Great game, I can't wait to play through it again, I'll probably cry due to remembering my childhood. Aww I feel so old... Oh I know how you feel but try to keep this in mind though: "We do not stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing." That should help you not feel old anymore ;) I never owned a TurboGraphix 16 but I remember playing the Bonk games at Toys'R'Us as a kid! I eventually got a Bonk game for my GameBoy though and was quite happy with it.
