Blumhouse Won't Reboot Classic Horror Like Halloween And The Craft, Here's Why

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Blumhouse says it will never remake or reboot the Halloween franchise for one very simple reason.

While reboots and remakes have been pretty standard for the movie industry over the past decade or more, there are also the rare franchises that just keep moving forward, finding new life without starting from scratch. That's especially the case with the horror genre, where beloved movies like Halloween and The Craft are being kept alive to tell stories to a new generation of viewers, without throwing out the original films in their respective series.

In 2018, Halloween hit theaters as a direct sequel to John Carpenter's 1978 original film of the same name--and there's two more on the way. What's more, The Craft: Legacy picks up nearly 25 years after the 1996 original Craft film, following a new group of young witches as they tap into their dark sides. Either of these movies would have been easy to imagine as a reboot, and in Halloween's case, that's already happened once before--lest we forget that franchise's ridiculous complicated timelines and the two Rob Zombie movies many of us would rather forget.

Now Playing: History of Michael Myers | Halloween

But for the founder of Blumhouse Productions, the company behind new installments of those franchises, that was never an option.

Speaking to GameSpot about Amazon Prime Video's Welcome to the Blumhouse films, Jason Blum spoke about the importance of honoring the legacy of the iconic horror franchises his company oversees. "I think it's crucial. I think otherwise, what's the point? I hate the idea of, 'Yeah, that old one worked. Let's call the new one that,'" he explained. "I think you have to respect what existed before you if you're going to continue it. I think we did that with The Craft[: Legacy]."

That's especially the case with Halloween. The next film, Halloween Kills, will arrive in theaters next year, once more with original series creator John Carpenter involved as a producer.

"John Carpenter created the whole f***ing thing. I think to erase him from that as you went forward on Halloween, I don't know, I thought that was a weird thing to do," Blum said. "I always said, if we were going to do it, we had to do it with him. And I'm glad I said that. I'm glad we did."

Fans of Halloween are glad he did, as well. The 2018 Halloween was a critical and commercial success, and managed to bring Jamie Lee Curtis back to the franchise. Now we just have to wait a year to see what happens next in the series. Based on the new trailer for Halloween Kills, it's going to be a bloody and disturbing journey when the sequel hits theaters on October 15, 2021.

@soulcrusher777: I agree even if I enjoyed the original it was not about terror, it was about a group of young ladies wanting to harness the power of the occult. It is an classic though but not as much as Mike Myers, Freddy, or Jason. I was surprised when I first watched it and it kept me glued to it. I had not seen the sequel and I am in no hurry to see it as I felt the original was enough and made its point.

reboot fail, Halloween and Nightmare on Elm street ( this was travesty) were both "rebooted" at least once both failed

As far as I know this has not been done with Friday the 13th and i dont want them to reboot it, there is no reason to either considering how Jason X ended, burned up on re entry to "earth 2" but mask survived so with iconic music as credits start to roll implying he would be back to massacre would be teen at a camp on the new earth

@tsunami2311: actually there was a Friday the 13th reboot. It was the rebooted in 2009. Jared Padalecki was the lead in it. The reboot was suppose to be an origin story but instead reboots the first 4 films in one. Making Jason a more leaner and quicker killer. He had the backstory of seeing his mom beheaded and that sent him down the path of becoming a killer. Friday the 13th was suppose to be rebooted again or something like that but the writer and producer are fighting in court over who owns the character. So that film wasn’t made and that caused the game that was made to cancel its dlc plans and future content. Blum has said that Friday the 13th was something he wanted to make too. I’m guessing he would take the Halloween route. It would be interesting if Blum does get to do the Friday the 13th movie, as Carpenter hates the film. Carpenter has said that Friday the 13th was made as a cash grab off his film. That the film has no substance.

The Craft: Legacy 2020 was an abomination of a film. Imagine a kinder, gentler, PC witchcraft movie with little to no drama and conflict. That's Legacy. Aside from the final 2 minutes, it had absolutely zero tie-in to the first movie.

As for Halloween, Zombie's first one was okay. Rather than supernatural focus or just ignoring things like physics, he focused more on the real world possibilities. How did Michael Myers get one from one place to another faster than a car? How did he lift that guy up by his nostril and toss him into a wall with one finger? Why does he have an endless supply of knives? How did he survive getting shot 20 times and run over by a truck? The originals always just fell back on "it's magic/occult/demonic!" or some derivative. I liked the more realistic approach in the remake, but the 2nd half of the movie fell flat.

@CyberEarth: yea liked the more realistic approach too. With Halloween Kills being the second film in this trilogy that continues for the first film, I hope we get an ending. Like a definite ending. Meyers is like decapitation or something to where he is dead. Like there is no coming back. Also don’t want to see the daughter or grand daughter or Laurie Strobe or Doyle or any Halloween character become the the next killer or possessed by Meyers. For once in a horror series like Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street or others I want a true and definite ending.

Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween is probably one of the best 'remakes' ever. It fixed everything wrong with the original and added context that greatly improved the story.

I don't know about the 2nd one, I haven't seen it. So I can't speak to that... but I can't even imagine how hard you would have to be hit in the head to not appreciate the 1st.

@skyhighgam3r: Zombie's Halloween missed the entire point of what Halloween is about. The story was a mess, the dialogue horrible, and the backstory completly made Myers unscary.

@Pupchu: agreed. While I was somewhat entertained, it strayed far from the lore behind Michael Myers’ character by removing all questions about him. Carpenter’s film is still the only truly great entry in the franchise, but I do have hopes for Halloween Kills. The previous one did many things wrong, but it did get Michael Myers right. Don’t even know when that last happened. Fingers crossed!

@lordbeefjerky: the original Halloween was simple stupid, remake is a lot better. The score of the original Halloween is the best part.

IMO Halloween Season of the Witch has a more creative story and is a more enjoyable film.

@systemoverload: Don’t make the mistake of thinking simple and stupid is the same. The original Halloween was simple, Rob Zombie’s remake was stupid. Season Of The Witch had an interesting story but the direction was hack which made the film thoroughly mediocre.

@lordbeefjerky: Friday the 13th is a better slasher film than Halloween. There is plenty of better slasher movies, Halloween is just not that good of a film.

@systemoverload: You are, of course, allowed to any opinion on these films. But on a pure technical level, Halloween is arguably a better directed, edited, acted, lighted, filmed and written film than Friday the 13th - a film that’s entertaining enough but in many ways a rip-off of Halloween and italian giallo.

@restatbonfire: Seriously, that's such a good example of a movie that should be remade. The story and ideas were amazing, but the execution was pretty awful.

@skyhighgam3r: Except you know they would completely blow it. It would only be a good idea if CB was directly involved because otherwise it would probably be a PG13 wussy fest.

How is Halloween and the Craft even in the same sentence? Halloween 2018 was great, and the Craft 2020 sucks ass. Lol.

@JohnCrichton: I loved the original and it had some real good scary moments in it. Now I do not mind closure as the end presented an cliffhanger. I would like to see closure to the series as the end for me was an cliffhanger.

@JohnCrichton: I think that falls under a different heading as it's just another adaptation of non-film source material. In this case, they're even going to be adapting "Frozen Hell," the little-read, full-length version of "Who Goes There?"

@uninspiredcup: Yes, the original was the best for me and it did it's thing even if it not too expensive make and the movie scared the crap out of me back in the day. The worst was Halloween III which had no relation to the lore.

You can reboot if done right.

While I love the original IT series starring Tim Curry, the new movies were received very well.

Thanks to the new Halloween movies though they gave the franchise a fresh lease on life. I don't know if they plan to continue with a new arc after the current planned saga with the old cast maybe handing over the torch to a younger cast for even more sequels but we don't need to see a reboot for at least twenty years.
