Bloodborne, the long-awaited PlayStation 4 role-playing game from the creators of Demons' Souls and Dark Souls, has finally arrived. But how is it holding up with critics? Quite well, it turns out.

No Caption Provided

GameSpot's 9/10 review said: "Bloodborne's excellent action, beautiful artistry, and religious melodrama make it another must-play in the Demon's Souls tradition."

One issue some are reporting is that Bloodborne's load times are too long. In response to those concerns, Sony and developer From Software are "exploring" a patch to reduce load times (and fix more bugs).

Check out a sampling of review scores and editor opinions below. And be sure to visit GameSpot sister site Metacritic for even more on Bloodborne's critical reception.

  • Game: Bloodborne
  • Developer: From Software
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4
  • Release Date: March 24
  • Price: $60

GameSpot -- 9/10

"The finest treasures are found within the city of Yharnam and the forests, lakes, and purgatories beyond it. Only Bloodborne would be so bold as to bury an entire factional player-versus-player mechanic within an optional region, which is in turn buried within a series of oblique steps you might miss if you aren't exploring every nook and cranny, or ignore the game's enigmatic hints. I finished Bloodborne in less time than I did Dark Souls II, yet I treasure it more in spite of its few missteps. In death there is life, and in blood, there is redemption. More hyperbole, yes, but for a game this theatrical, only hyperbole will do." - Kevin VanOrd [Full review]

Game Informer -- 9.75/10

"Bloodborne is a blood-drenched horror gem that has only the faintest of cracks in its façade. Bloodborne succeeds through sparse storytelling, lush atmospheres (conjuring up notions of the best of Lovecraft's work), and tight combat that forces you to be aggressive. While this new IP doesn't stray far from the established Souls franchise, it is a magical, wondrous work that admirably instills both terror and triumph in those brave enough to delve into it." - Daniel Tack [Full review]

The Guardian -- 5/5

"Bloodborne, like its predecessors, will spill its secrets slowly, over months rather than days. Part of the appeal of [director Hidetaka Miyazaki's] games is this slow-release effect, whereby riddles are unpicked and shared by the community, rather than plainly laid out on the first day of release. It brings players together, where the fiction itself keeps them somewhat apart. Bloodborne is, by any measure, an extraordinary game, one that runs forcefully against the commercial tide, subverting perceived wisdom that contemporary games have to hold their players' hands, or make their shape and rules explicit from the get-go." - Simon Parkin [Full review]

The Escapist -- 4.5/5

"Bloodborne, like the rest of the Souls games, isn't going to be for everyone. But, if you're the patient sort and are willing to put in the time and effort to get good at Bloodborne's complex and punishing combat, you'll find Bloodborne nearly impossible to put down." - Mitchell Saltzman [Full review]

Destructoid -- 9/10

"Bloodborne is an interesting mix of everything From Software has learned throughout its storied developmental career. Not everything will gel with fans old and new, but for the most part, the shift towards a combat-oriented game is a net positive. From Software is still one of the only developers left that makes you work for your satisfaction, and Bloodborne is damn satisfying." - Chris Carter [Full review]

GamesRadar+ -- 4.5/5

"Bloodborne lies somewhere between Dark Souls and Dark Souls II, better than the latter but not quite as good as the former. The fourth time following the same template means the master strokes, however masterful they are, are anticipated. But take nothing away from this brilliant, brooding, brutal reinvention, because almost as great as the best game ever is pretty bloody great." - Ben Griffin [Full review]

Digital Spy -- 5/5

"Bloodborne may not be a Souls game and it doesn't fall into the horror genre, but it captures everything that makes the series so satisfying, so terrifying, and so magical. I want to keep playing, I want to discover its secrets, I want to fight every monster, try every weapon, discuss theories, and explore as many of the community dungeons as possible. To put it bluntly, I want to bleed the game dry." - Liam Martin [Full review]

On the surface, one might view this as a typical Eddie article which usually only fans the fire of the console war. And there may be some of that. After all, this article is proving that Bloodborne is a universally-agreed-upon "great game" and a Sony exclusive.

However, in some ways, this is actually an anti-fanboy article. Many commenters accuse GS for being "Sony fanboys", but unless you're ready to call ALL of the review sites above "Sony fanboys", then you can see this article proves that the review contained no console bias. It's just that good of a game!

I like the soul games. Problem however is that most of it is single player only, so not much point in picking it up at the moment. I'll get it when it's $30 and the price drop will pay for the inevitable DLC.

Will be easier to when I get some higher level players to help me out on bosses:p

You know you've released a gem when the only thing people can complain about is how long the game makes you wait to play it.

None of the X1's exclusives appealed to me personally, but in terms of quantity and review scores even Sony fanboys would have to admit they've done well compared to stuff like DriveClub and the Order.

I've enjoyed playing multiplats on my PS4, but (especially as a Souls fan) I only now feel thoroughly vindicated in my choice of console. No Man's Sky will be good too.

I do genuinely feel bad for X1 owners and hope Titanfall, Forza, Ori (which I'll get on PC) and Sunset Overdrive make up for it. It kinda sucks that console exclusives are a thing.

Disagree about the existence of console exclusives. Without exclusives we would be stuck with two nearly identical systems with the biggest difference being controllers. Exclusives give us a reason to buy one console over the other.

Since you mention Sunset Overdrive I see that game as almost the opposite of Bloodborne and I don't mean that in a bad way. Bloodborne is for gamers that want a difficult experience where their patience, attention to detail, and resilience will be tested. It is very much a hardcore game. Sunset Overdrive's fun comes from the casualness of the game. Fast exciting movement and travel, an assortment of guns that make you feel over powered as the games go on, relatively easy difficulty and learning curve, and direct objectives for the most part. This is a game to play if you want lay back, relax, and just have fun.

Your trollish attempt to inflame the infantile console war is meaningless.

It's all the same to me though, I've got a PS4.

Digital Spy.. "doesn't fall into the horror genre" but it's "so terrifying." Okay. This game oozes horror. In my opinion, anyway.

I was debating between this or waiting for Witcher. Since Mortal Kombat comes out in a few weeks I was thinking of grabbing Bloodborne this weekend and having both games hold me over for Arkham Knight. By the time I get through with those three games I can probably get a good deal on Witcher 3 and that should keep me busy until the fall rush of games.

I'm just digging into DA:I which should keep me tied up another month at least. Then it'll be time for Witcher 3, then Batman. I'll probably pick this up after all of that.

It is such a ridiculous ideology. This concept is rarely used in other forms of media or aspects of life. Imagine telling someone "you're not a real movie watcher. You don't watch true cinematic masterpieces." Or "you aren't a real basketball player you only play pick up games not for organized leagues." The only other time I see something like this is with music. Something along the lines of "you don't listen to REAL rap music you listen to casual, mainstream rap."

At the end of the day people are going to play, watch, and listen to whatever they like. I don't think most people worry about being a "real gamer" or if the game they are playing is casual or hardcore. Most people go by likes and dislikes. If I dislike Bloodborne that doesn't mean I am not a "real gamer", it just isn't a game for me.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The term "gamer" is just as stupid as "real gamer". You are a gaming enthusiast. Unless you play competitively that is. You don't call a guy who plays football with friends a "footballer" or a book reader a "booker". I curse the dunce who came up with the term gamer.

I believe gamer came from the shortening of "game player", though I have no way to back this up and could be completely wrong. And I believe the term footballer is used in reverence to soccer players from time to time.

But nothing is as stupid as there phrases "real gamer" or "true gamer" as these are terms of elitism used to put down other players because a certain group feels the games they enjoy are somehow better than other types (like casual games, Kinect games, Call of Duty, etc), thus making them feel superior in some way.

The Division is confirmed to have pay-to-win microtransactions, just like Ubisoft's other recent games. Perhaps you may wish to bury your hype a little.

I almost feel like the high scores are also a bit of a dig at casual gaming and the ridiculous hand holding you get in most games nowadays. Dying is bad, it's supposed to have a penalty or there's no tension in any fight. AC:Unity was the worst, you die and literally respawn exactly where you were with all the stuff you had - why even bother "killing" me then?
