Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition Shows Off Its Remastered Cutscenes

The classic adventure game will sharpen up and improve its cinematics for this new release.

Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition was announced in March for PC, Switch, PS4, and Xbox One, and now we've got a look at how the game will improve the original's cutscenes. The game, from port and update specialists Nightdive Studios, will arrive with sharper resolutions than what was possible in the original.

The cutscenes, seen in the trailer below, have been cleaned up--they now run at resolutions up to 4K, and at 60FPS (compared to 15FPS in the original). Character models have been cleaned up, but the game looks like it'll essentially be the same as the beloved original, if these scenes are anything to go by.

You could argue that a certain something is lost in the cleaned-up scenes, as the grain in the original allows your imagination to fill in some details--but it's clear that work has gone in to bring this release up to modern standards. You can watch the new and old cinematics side-by-side in the video below.

The Enhanced Edition is still in development, and a release date has not been announced. If you want to experience the original Blade Runner experience, which was, for a long time, essentially impossible, you can check it out on GOG.

Nightdive Studios is also currently working on System Shock and Shadow Man: Remastered.

certainly look better then original 640x480 @ 15 fps but either the youtube video even in 4k mode is really shitty or there is alot artifact box happen even thin the 4k @ 60.

It almost like they scaled it instead redoing it @ 4k but that 4k does not look like 4k to me it just look like original movies cleaned up and scaled to 4k.

Never got to play the game back then loved movie though.

@tsunami2311: It's not based on the movie though.

It looks way better, but I feel they should have added the film grain back in post, it adds a lot of character to the visuals.

You can still play the original game, but you have to set it so that it only uses one core.

Very nice. Great more people will have an opportunity to play this.

Super ambitious game for it's time.

@uninspiredcup: It's certainly unique. It was more interesting than most adventure games at the time due to the detective elements too.

Sorry but impossible how exactly? . I have the original on PC CD Rom and still have a Pentium 2 266 running at 300 Mhz with a Riva TNT Ultra 32 Video card for older games. It also has a Vodoo 2 12 MB and Soundblaster Awe 32. It was a great system at the time. It plays it flawlessly and didn't look that bad even on a flat screen panel as my CRT screen died some time ago.

It has always been one of my favourite games.

I am aware of quite a few people that have the original game on disc so it's a stretch to say it was impossible to play before GOG.com.

@deviltaz35: I don't think the "essentially impossible" is describing any technical hurdles to playing the game, but its unavailability to be purchased between its original release in 1997 and its rerelease on GOG in 2019,

@zmanbarzel: yes but also, mostly impossible. For modern Windows you needed a third party patch and installer and sometimes a game data file download (which is illegal to distribute). And still people kept reporting that this process would not work for their setup. You could also not run the game on Mac OS or Linux or other platforms (you can now, via ScummVM, which the GOG version is using, like Amiga OS, Android, RPi), since those were completely unsupported by the original.

And to take matters a bit away from the "impossible" thing, the ScummVM version added support for subtitles, and the team did the English transcription and added the English subtitles (offered on the ScummVM site), while dedicated fans also did the French and Spanish version transcripts and subtitles (more subtitle languages will be coming in the future too!). ScummVM version fixes many bugs of the original game, including a few odd game breaking ones, and at least one (rare but reported) case of reaching a dead end early in the game. It offers a separate mode with restored content for the game (which is still WIP but already available to try out), and UI improvements that make sense by today's standards.

@deviltaz35: Notice how it says "GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers"? I don't think it's impossible either, but it's GameSpot's way of telling you to buy it from that link so that they get money. Cheap tactic.

@Person4: Not too many people (like literally less than .05%) keep 20 year old PC's to play retro games. Unless you had one, it was essentially impossible. I don't think their framing is hyperbolic at all.

@CashPrizes: lol what language is that? ''Framing is hyperbolic''. Nobody speaks like that on a day to day basis. Stop looking up the thesaurus before going into a forum lol.

In any case apparently i misunderstood what they meant as they were referring to purchasing not playing.
