Black PS5 Sale Canceled After Site Says It Received Threats To Safety

The systems were expected to ship in late spring and were much more expensive than standard PS5 units.

Last week, a custom black PS5 model went on sale via the store SUP3R5, promising a sleek and classic look for the PS5--which is currently only available in a white version. The systems went out of stock on the site almost immediately, but following what the site says were threats to its safety, orders are being refunded and the system is no longer being sold at all.

According to VGC, a statement on the company's now-deleted Twitter account said the sale didn't go as planned, as players were charged without knowing if they had actually secured a system, and a later message said existing orders were canceled due to threats to the staff's safety.

"Last night, our team began receiving credible threats to their safety," the store said in the statement. "We take these threats seriously. We aren't willing to risk the safety and well-being of our team, or the potential impact this would bring to delivering your order."

The store didn't rule out a future sale, but it appears for now that you'll have to wait for Sony or another third-party company to offer custom faceplates if you're looking to swap them out. Last year, a site initially called Platestation 5 was offering its own replacement plates for preorder before receiving a legal threat from Sony. It canceled these orders.

The accessories company DBrand said it will be selling its own custom matte black PS5 faceplates this year. It's even urging Sony to attempt a lawsuit and doesn't believe it will have to stop making them.

Thus far, Sony has given no indication that it will sell the PS5 in alternate colors, nor are there any other colors for the controllers or accessories. It remains to be seen if this is a permanent decision or one that was necessary because of early supply issues. For Xbox Series X|S, there are already different variants available. The Xbox Series X is only available in black, while the Xbox Series S is only available in white, and neither have removable components.
