Black Mesa Half-Life mod launching September 14

First part of Source-powered community mod will be released next week; initial release will stop at Lambda Core level, offering 8-10 hours of gameplay.

The community behind the development of Half-Life mod Black Mesa (formerly Black Mesa: Source) has announced that the first part of the game will finally be released on September 14 this year.

Black Mesa will be released next week.
Black Mesa will be released next week.

The mod's official website has been updated with a countdown timer, and Black Mesa project leader Carlos Montero posted on the site's forums confirming the game's official release.

"On September 14th you will see the first release of Black Mesa," Montero said in his post. "This will include our re-envisioning of Half-Life all the way up to Lambda Core. We believe this is a great way to provide a complete-feeling 8-10 hour experience with a solid ending, make our fans happy and help us make the best overall game possible."

A remake of Valve's original 1998 title Half-Life using the Source engine, Black Mesa promises a fully reconstructed Half-Life universe built from the ground up with new models, maps, soundtrack, voice acting, and textures. The remake will include the original game's protagonist, Gordon Freeman, as well as the original cast of characters and environments.

The mod project was launched in 2004 following fan disappointment over Valve's official Half-Life remake, Half-Life: Source. According to the project's site, Black Mesa will not require Half-Life: Source to play--just a copy of any Source engine game installed on Steam.

The Black Mesa soundtrack is now available to download via the project's site.

I've been waiting for this for years, so I'm very happy to hear this. I'll be playing the hell out of it.

That said, I'm a little disappointed they didn't wait to release it until they were finished the last few chapters. They're so close to the finish line. They couldn't have waited a little longer?

Hopefully, the development for Xen and onwards won't be too long.

I really hate Half-Life. Here, spend five minutes on a subway train, then wander around a facility for another 10 minutes. All of that could've been summarized in a 45 second cutscene.

Walk five steps. Load. Oh crap I forgot something and have to go back. Load. Got it and going back to where I was. Load. Walk another five steps. Load.

And I hate games where I can't kill a boss by shooting it. Oh, so electricity can kill a boss, but not thousands of rounds of ammunition? Bull crap. You shoot anything enough, it will die. I freaking hate this game. Red Faction was like Half-Life: good version.

@DrKill09 For someone that gave Duke Nukem Forever 8.5, id say you wouldnt know a well constructed FPS if one fell on you.

Half-Life is, and always will be considered one of the greatest 'Story Driven' FPS games ever made. Yes it has its faults (e.g. Load Points), but lets be honest, theres no such thing as a perfect FPS, but i would quite happily say that Half Life is closer to perfection than DNF.and Red Faction.

Hey, I like load points 1000 times better than it actually stopping the gameplay to some screen with a summary, then a loading screen, then you start off somewhere close to where you left off... The loading literally took a few seconds. Not at all long enough to take you out of the game like an actual loading screen or a cut scene...

@DrKill09 Red Faction? Lol I guess everyone has an opinion...doesn't mean they don't stink.

Stop crapping about a game that came out almost 15 years ago.

@DrKill09 Go back to your games with no substance and full of explosions and blood and senseless profanity, and leave the games with the great immersion, storytelling, and gameplay that is TRULY fun to the true gamers. And don't ever play Portal or Portal 2, or it may make your mind explode from its complexity.

For the record, Valve is 500000x times better than EA will EVER be.

@DrKill09 ........ So this is what Halo and Call of Duty has done to the minds of gamers everywhere. And the whole point of the game's lack of cutscenes is to fully immerse you in the game. It's one of the ONLY games to tell a great, epic, immersive story without EVER making you leave the character or watch a video. And you were supposed to be Freeman. The reason he doesn't speak or react to situations is because you were supposed to react like you think Gordon would. And the intro to the game was awesome, and really gave you insight into the depth of the complex and your job.

And Red Faction, a good game? LOL whatever.

@IGFGAThrawn @DrKill09 COD has ruined gaming and created a generation of Millenials who have no idea what a good game is. Top 5 of 10 best selling games on 360 are the same game = COD! Pathetic.

@DrKill09 Well you have my deepest sincere apologies since you weren't around when HL was released and it would seem to you like it was created in the stone age but please take the other guys' advice and stick to CoD and please don't ever bring Red Faction up in a conversation it's a good mediocre forgettable game the only thing good about it was the destructible environments , oh and BTW open question what do you think about the following games: Doom, Quake II, Quake III Arena and Deus Ex?

I understand your opinon on Half-life and I will not critize you for it. However, my take on the game was it was beautifully done and it was a game that kept me on the edge of seat. The graphics was okay for the game back in the day and Valve tied Half-Life to Half-Life: Blue Shift in which the game was played through the character of a security officer and on that ride in the beginning you saw that character trying to open a door. Half-Life to me was the best game back then and today.

@DrKill09

Wow, you kind of completely missed the point of that. I know ADD has hit everyone like a scourge in the last few years and you wish everything to just flash by so you can get to the big explosions and loud noises, but the whole point of that sequence was to give you time to play with the controls, so YOU learn how everything works instead of the game holding your hand through everything like all new games are now. I know, gamers are getting dumber every year, so gamers now probably wouldn't even know how to play these older games. But anyway, when it was made, gamers were smarter, and this worked. Also, the point of them not having cut scenes is that you NEVER leave Gordon Freeman and he never does anything or says anything that you do not control. Meaning, Gordon Freeman is not a character in a game, YOU are Gordon Freeman. So if he has to endure a 10 minute tram ride to get to work, YOU need to endure it. Get it? Probably not, but I've said my piece...

@DrKill09 Have you ever heard of creating a game's atmosphere? The whole point of NOT doing as a 45 second cutscene is to establish this whole world you're going into, the job you're in, etc...and then it ALL goes to hell in a handbasket.

As far as killing a boss by not shooting it? Wow. Just...just wow. Stick to Call of Duty, kid.

@DrKill09 It was a game from 1998, and FPSs hadn't established a proper formula yet.

Give credit where it's due; it's easy to play, yet packs a fair challenge.

Though, one thing I really have to ask is why you even bothered commenting on here about it...that's what the reviews section is for if you wanna vent your anger at this game.

@DrKill09 @soccerpzn And this game is FAR more scarier than FEAR ever was. Doesn't help that FEAR required you to look at ONE spot at the right moment for the fears to work, and if you were looking elsewhere, you didn't notice a damn thing that was scary.

This is great. Almost unbelievable. I've seen this on Moddb maybe half a decade ago? Recently I checked and I thought it was dead. In Kleiner's words "... my relief is almost palpable."

We, the gamers, are so fortunate to have such talented individuals building Black Mesa piece by piece into a modern realization! Plus, with it being 8-10 hours, dare I say even part one will be longer than the average shooters! So exciting!!!

@chimpdaddy But there are solid reasons why modding isn`t available for consoles. To open the system for community means giving green light to piracy.

@igorphoenix well it does and doesn't as its already open to piracy on all consoles but thats another discussion :-) but yeah I think it's a shame that games aren't moddable on consoles

@chimpdaddy @igorphoenix Agreed. I would gladly play Skyrim with mods on X360, can`t force myself into playing on PC (with few exceptions like BF3 which was way lot fancier on PC, Sims 3 and Minecraft).

@Pieter_1986 as. mentioned where's your proof, this is a mod and so not recognized by valve or Sony, just because psn has a modified version of steam doesn't mean you'll get it, what about the other hundreds of mods for hl1 and 2, psn hasn't got those, it's coded specifically for pc and not consoles, the orange box games and portal 2 are coded slightly differently for console, chill out man, why the hating

@chimpdaddy Totally agree (though I love consoles, both PS3 and X360, looking forward to next gen), played GoW2 HD remake last week... straightforward port with the same lo-res HUD occupying half of the screen. Black Mesa team done a great job (official HL Source was a huge dissappointment).

The mod should reveal that the machine at the beginning (that causes the whole mess), is actually glaDOS.

Because all of Half-Life 1 was just a test... for science!

@Liliroots I got the original HL2 limited edition box set that had CS:S as a bonus..... 7 years ago atleast I remember installing it and coming into contact with something called "steam" which at that point I'd never heard of (and I don't think even had a store at that point) so made an account registered HL2 to it and in the years between then and steam becoming awesome lost the account details Think I might just re buy it for this mod
