Black Mesa Half-Life mod launching September 14

First part of Source-powered community mod will be released next week; initial release will stop at Lambda Core level, offering 8-10 hours of gameplay.

The community behind the development of Half-Life mod Black Mesa (formerly Black Mesa: Source) has announced that the first part of the game will finally be released on September 14 this year.

Black Mesa will be released next week.
Black Mesa will be released next week.

The mod's official website has been updated with a countdown timer, and Black Mesa project leader Carlos Montero posted on the site's forums confirming the game's official release.

"On September 14th you will see the first release of Black Mesa," Montero said in his post. "This will include our re-envisioning of Half-Life all the way up to Lambda Core. We believe this is a great way to provide a complete-feeling 8-10 hour experience with a solid ending, make our fans happy and help us make the best overall game possible."

A remake of Valve's original 1998 title Half-Life using the Source engine, Black Mesa promises a fully reconstructed Half-Life universe built from the ground up with new models, maps, soundtrack, voice acting, and textures. The remake will include the original game's protagonist, Gordon Freeman, as well as the original cast of characters and environments.

The mod project was launched in 2004 following fan disappointment over Valve's official Half-Life remake, Half-Life: Source. According to the project's site, Black Mesa will not require Half-Life: Source to play--just a copy of any Source engine game installed on Steam.

The Black Mesa soundtrack is now available to download via the project's site.

@Taix34 You only need a copy of any source engine game, like Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike Source, Counter-Strike GO, Left 4 Dead 2, etc.

Actually, read here: http://wiki.blackmesasource.com/System_Requirements

It says you only need the Source SDK 2007. (Which comes with TF2)

It took them so long to do it that the Source engine is years out of date.

Half the game, and they've been reportedly working on Zen for over 2 years alone. Bleh, better than nothing at this point considering most people were EXPECTING nothing by this point.

@DarkSaber2k ...You do realize Xen was only 4 levels right? This isn't half the game, this is like 80%.

It's kind of disappointing that the Xen world isn't done yet.

I never understood people's dislike of playing the Xen world chapters. I always thought it was the most fascinating part of the game. It should be even more so -- for me anyway -- if the devs are able to take full advantage of the source engine.

Here's to the success of the most anticipated mod ever!

@xeno1ith FPS platforming. That's why people disliked it. It's never done right, no matter the game, especially not a game released back in 1998.

I never had a problem with the jump platforming in HL. Patience was a virtue, particularly in Xen.

But I can see why people would quickly get frustrated with it if they kept failing at it.

@xeno1ith @RemHitara_basic I liked Xen as well, but there wasn't much flow or direction to the level design like there was in the other levels. It was kinda just "OK, NEW WORLD, NOW YOU CAN GUESS WHAT TO DO"On top of that, the combat arenas Xen offered were very weak compared to the rest of HL, and made the combat against the good AI rather uninteresting. It was a great concept, just rushed in its execution. That's one of the reason BM's devs are releasing this way. Xen is being changed to make better use of possible gameplay mechanics, as well as to be more "fun", and it's being expanded to be it's own mini game, big enough to be something like HL2:Episode 1 except for BM.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on Xen world then.

And, to the contrary, just because someone didn't like something in the game doesn't mean it should not have been included. Given the enormous popularity of HL, it must not have deterred that much from the game.

@xeno1ith Just because someone doesn't have a problem with it doesn't mean that it should be there in the first place. It was mostly platforming in a confusing environment that was like nowhere else in the game.

About god damn time, though I guess this squashes the rumor that it would be released alongside HL3 in some secret deal with Valve.

I think that a graphic and sound enhancement won't be enough to bring me back to Half Life. The gameplay itself is for me too old.

I hope Kevin and whoever else wants to join plays this game as they did the last Half Life 2 anniversary stream. Maybe not quite as long, but still, it'd be nice to see them play this from the beginning.

@d_khan Well, you should probably play the old one first. Either way, you're probably going to think "Huh, I don't know what the fuss is all about." I'm not necessarily saying it's bad, it's far from it, but I also don't believe you can go in and expect something as amazing as it once was.

Exactly, you can't say the game didn't age well when current AAA games can't even match HL2's facial expressions. For the most part, this applies to it's physics engine as well.

@Elite_Bushido @3v1LR0n1N @d_khan Didn't age well... Are you kidding? The original lasted me a decade of replays, multiplayer is still alive today. HL2's source engine is also pushing a decade and still has one of the most advanced facial expressions out there. If there's one thing you can say about the Half-Life series which is absolutely ridiculous it's saying the games don't age well...

You're kidding me right? The game was so well made, it is easily better an more fun than most games that have come out in the past 10 years. Sure the graphics aren't up to par, but the gameplay surpasses most!

A mate of mine has been going on recently about his playthrough of a Source based Half Life remake. The whole time I thought he was referring to this but I guess he must be on the "disappointing" Half Life: Source rather than this new Mod (which I heard about a while ago and assumed had been released)

@GinsuVictim Well yeah, isn't that true for everyone? xD It still is important though. I only started to enjoy XEN when I actually comprehended why I was there. It would be really hard to remake that part though due to the weird gravity and whatnot.
