BioWare's New IP Will Be Revealed Soon, Exec Teases

What do you hope it is?

BioWare will announce, or at least start to talk about, its new IP relatively soon. EA Studios boss Patrick Soderlund shared the detail as part of a wider talk with GI.biz about the importance of making new IP.

"We've been very open about the fact that BioWare is working on a new IP, and we'll get to talk about that in the not too distant future," he explained. "We have other teams working on new IP as well. I think it's about a balance, right? Making sure that we continue to push what great looks like for Battlefield or FIFA or Madden--or Star Wars, for that matter--while continuing to invest in something new."

Speaking generally about new IP, Soderlund said the video game industry has gotten better over the years at looking at analyzing and understanding what projects will work and what will fall flat. EA now more closely conducts data analysis and gathers feedback from test groups to determine what it makes. At the same time, Soderlund stressed that EA doesn't want to "design by committee."

"That's not who we are--but we do want to make sure that we have touch points with players out there, so we can understand if we're thinking about this in the right way," he explained.

EA also recently opened a facility in Stockholm for its DICE studio where it brings in consumers and films them playing games, before interviewing them after. EA can see where people might have gotten stuck and generally get an idea about what they like and dislike about a certain game. This is something of a engineered rapproach, but Soderlund went on to say that it's important to note that "not everything can be engineered."

"We need to own the creative, we need to be the ones pushing where we're headed," he said.

Immediately before E3 this year, EA teased a new IP from one of its studios, saying it would be announced "soon." It wasn't shown during EA's E3 briefing, however. In March this year, BioWare's Alistair McNally, who heads up design and art for the company's studios in Edmonton, Montreal, and Austin, said BioWare's new IP looks "stunning." McNally wore a t-shirt at the Game Developers Conference in March that showed BioWare's new IP, but no one noticed.

BioWare's new IP, which is in development at the Mass Effect: Andromeda studio in Edmonton, was officially announced in September 2012. At the time, BioWare said the game was being built from the ground up running on "new gaming technology," a likely reference to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, which had not yet been released at the time.

In addition to BioWare, EA's Motive Studios is making a new IP under the director of Assassin's Creed producer Jade Raymond. This will be a "gigantic" game along the lines of Assassin's Creed and Grand Theft Auto, though it has not yet been announced.

In a recent interview, EA executive Peter Moore talked about how EA is prioritizing making new stuff instead of remasters.

Here's hoping for a new Star Wars rpg. Star Wars is such a rich universe, and if anybody can give us a good Star Wars rpg, it's Bioware. Give us an epic Star Wars rpg using the frame work of Dragon Age Inquisition where instead of fighting 15 grand dragons, you'll be fighting 15 grand sith lords instead!

Don't trust EA but I trust Bioware. Do right by us, guys.

@jgui: I'm not being sarcastic. Mass Effect are my favorite games. Dragon Age, Baldur's Gate, KOTOR, Jade Empire are all great games.

Any chance they will focus on the story like they used to be masters at, or will they continue to preach their political message? For one, I am not giving them the benefit of the doubt until they prove they care about gamers more than the message of some of their employees.

@Daelusca: pretty much everyone that used to work for bioware 10 years ago (dragon age , kotor, jade empire, mass effect, baldurs gate etc) is gone and moved onto different things. this is EA they care about stockholders and piracy. they cannot grasp the fact that: good game = sales and poor game = indifference; They will continue to run the gaming indusrty into the ground i would not trust EA with the pong license at the moment. Just wait till they re dead and done for us to get back the awesome gaming moments from gaem devs that care about innovating and making a great gaems out of passion for games and gamers. Not sure if i got my point accross but just in case im gonna leave this here : "**** EA and all their IP's"

If it's not an rpg I'm not interested. With EA using their charts and graphs to find the most generically pleasing things, it'll most likely be garbage anyways.

Just give us the next Dragon Age, make it like Origins with a better story and more characters, and 90% of the fanbase will be happy.

Bioware does one thing well, RPG's. If it's anything other than an RPG they're wasting time and resources while trying to compete against studios that do the other genres better than they do.

When they discuss looking at the analytics I can't help but get the feeling it's going to be another "Shadow Realms" - some type of MOBA or maybe another zombie survival game. God knows we don't have enough of those

Let me guess.... Another MOBA!

@dhracox: No, you can't. The Dream DLC will be $30 when it comes out, or you can buy the season pass for $50 :D

"EA now more closely conducts data analysis and gathers feedback from test groups to determine what it makes."

This is why we can't have nice things. By trying to design something that appeals to ALL demographics and tastes, you inevitably end up with 100% generic garbage.

@mdinger: EA Bunker

Corporate Commander : "we gotta make a test group for our new game . Ppl will play it and give feedback to the devs. We'll maek teh best games and we'll be rich in no time"

Random A$$hole : " yes many ppl have responded to our ads and apparently our chief psychologist can identify two distinct groups in which these ppl would fit in. The dumb fucks and the gamers.

Random A$$hole. " So on which group do we test our games on?"

CC: " Well let's think logical about this. although we're making a game, which would indicate that we should test our product on the gamers, we do want to sell it to the masses.

RA : ok... makes sense.

CC : " What is more predominant in "the masses" ? Gamers or dumb fucks?

RA : well , considering the average IQ is...

CC : " bring in the dumb fucks and let's test our games on them.

And then we got todays games that cater to the skilless unimaginative cunts but i ask you:" How can you actually argue with that logic? "

Avatar image for Zombie8814

@Thanatos2k: I am actually hoping it's NOT an RPG. I thought the shooting element of Mass Effect 3 was really good. I'd like to see BioWare expand on that. There really aren't that many good 3rd person shooters.
