BioWare's Shadow Realms Possibly Rebooted For Xbox One, PS4, PC

Sources suggest game undergoes reboot so it can make use of Origin.

Citing multiple sources, Kotaku reports today that BioWare Austin's episodic online role-playing game Shadow Realms, which was announced in August for a release in 2015, may have been rebooted and now might not launch until 2017.

Two sources told Kotaku that Shadow Realms was canceled outright, while a third tipster, described as "reliable," said the game was not scrapped, but rather significantly overhauled in late October 2014. That's around the time that BioWare delayed the game's closed alpha test.

According to this source, Shadow Realms will now have a full campaign. The insider went on to say that Shadow Realms is now, at least tentatively, scheduled to launch in 2017 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The game was officially announced only for PC, but BioWare Austin general manager Jeff Hickman said Shadow Realms could come to console if fans demanded it.

Kotaku also obtained a photo of an internal EA database that shows that Shadow Realm's online servers were recently switched off. BioWare Austin has kept quiet about the game recently, though community manager Eric Musco did make clear on Reddit last month that Shadow Realms is "absolutely not canceled."

Shadow Realms was reportedly rebooted so that the team could integrate EA's online service Origin into it. Multiple people with knowledge of the matter told Kotaku that EA gives teams using internal technology and services more budget, boosting the likelihood of a game to succeed.

The new version of Shadow Realms, according to Kotaku, does use Origin, and thus BioWare Austin has been given a bigger budget to expand and improve the game.

EA did not respond to Kotaku's request for comment. As of press time, EA also had not gotten back to GameSpot about this report. We'll have more details on Shadow Realms' development as they become available.

Frankly given Bioware's attempts at multiplayer so far I really wasn't expecting much, ME3's multiplayer was only fun because ME3's combat was really well done, but even that was ground down by the fact that it was essentially just your bog standard horde mode. DA inquisition's multiplayer is nearly the same thing only with a much less interesting combat system and TOR is pretty much a replica of WOW with little to no innovation in mechanics, bioware doesn't really seem to be very multiplayer minded, it just seems like something they have to do to appease EA.

<< LINK REMOVED >> MMOs are pretty much clones of each other. WoW is a clone of Asheron's call.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> You've either never played Asheron's Call or never played WoW. Either that or you just have a strange definition of the word clone. They really aren't very similar. EQ is a circle diku MUD with a graphical interface if you really want to nitpick anyway. MMOs have been around since the late 1970s. They have changed to a degree, but many of the core concepts remain the same. That being said, TOR is quite different from WoW in a number of ways. It's similar in many ways as well, but they definitely aren't the same game.

<< LINK REMOVED >> They are going back to the drawing board. Obviously they will use a lot of the assets they have, but it seems they are completely starting back at the beginning with everything else. The project is essentially being "rebooted". There are many definitions for the word reboot so I'm not sure why you are so up in arms over this.

The whole thing was not received very well back when they showed the gameplay and gave details. Episodic release, multiplayer only, etc. Now it seems they are going to release a "full" game instead of episodic. It's not uncommon for developers to have a game far in development and then have to fully restart. Look at the whole debacle of Prey 2.

Let's just all be happy that they are willing to lose a lot of money in order to make sure the product we get is quality.

Eh can't say I'm too disappointed, an episode RPG didn't sound all that amazing, I'd prefer a full campaign.

The PS4 and XboxOne in 2017? I can't even imagine something so old and obsolete so far in the future.

I guess past generations were much longer, but these new consoles were much further behind the curve the moment they were released.

Regardless, this game really interests me. Anything I can get my hands on that's like The Secret World is great.

I can understand the financial incentive, but what happens if Origin disappears by 2017? Two years is a long time in the gaming business. Things change.

The only way I'm throwing my money on this will be if Bio makes it a proper single player game, what they are supposed to make.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Obviously that can't be the only reason for a reboot. The game has been received quite poorly across the board after the gameplay previews/details came out. Developers listen closely as to what people are saying about their product when it is first shown. There was a lot of complaints over the episodic/free to play nature of the game. I'm guessing they wanted to go that route because the budget was not big enough to make a full length campaign all at once and they needed the influx of cash from people playing to fully realize the game.

Getting increased budget from EA will allow them to create the full campaign and release it as a 60$ game instead of some kind of f2p hybrid.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Everything... and that's coming from someone who's been playing rpgs since, what, 1983? It's been mainstreamed to the extent that nothing stands out. Combat is more button mashing than strategy. It's rather dull and boring, and like most games nowadays, implemented the ubisoft open-world model. So much to do, yet so insignificant and boring. Didn't like it one bit. But with the younger gamer generation, it appears that the more pixels are thrown onto your TV, the better. Graphics > game play these days, sadly. Just look at the success of ps4, because of that. My two cents...

By 2017 the 4 v 1 craze will have been over for more than 2 years. I suspect that this is turning into a completely different game.

Also, Frostbite sucks.

"According to this source, Shadow Realms will now have a full campaign."

What exactly would that mean? It's not episodic? Or is it going to have a single player campaign?

<< LINK REMOVED >> Not episodic. If you read in between the lines you can assume that the whole reason for the episodic release was because of lack of budget. You can basically create a portion of the game and release it, getting an influx of cash to help fund the next "episode" and keep the studio afloat budget wise.

With the increased budget from implementing origin they seem to be able to make the full campaign. Thus it may no longer be a free 2 play game and simply be a full 60$ game.
