[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, BioWare Austin officially announced the cancellation of Shadow Realms. The developer will now focus its efforts on other projects, but mostly PC MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, BioWare Austin general manager Jeff Hickman explains in a statement posted on the game's website. You can read his full statement below.

"Today I’m sharing some important news about Shadow Realms and our BioWare Austin studio.

We’ve made the decision to not move forward with development of Shadow Realms. We fully recognize that this news is disappointing to some of our fans, so I want to explain more behind this decision.

While the team did amazing work on the game concept and we got lots of great feedback from our fans at events and through other game testing, right now there are other projects for the team to work on within the BioWare studios for the coming year and beyond. We’ve got an incredibly talented team here at the Austin studio, and they are excited and already deep on new projects within the BioWare family, ones that will make some great BioWare games even better.

These include additional ongoing enhancements to the award-winning Dragon Age: Inquisition, as well as the next game in the Mass Effect series and other new IP.

But the biggest focus for our team in BioWare Austin will be on Star Wars: The Old Republic. As every Star Wars fan knows, this is a massive year in the Star Wars universe. We have some great plans for expanding this epic game this year, and look forward to sharing the news about those plans with our players in the coming weeks.

For all the people that registered for the Shadow Realms Closed Alpha, we’re working on a way to say thank-you for signing up. To all those players that gave us feedback at Gamescom and PAX, and those that shared their thoughts and impressions in the past months, we thank you for being part of the conversation."

The original story is below.

Following a report last month that claimed BioWare's 4v1 PC online game Shadow Realms had been rebooted for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, sources told Game Informer today that the title has been canceled outright.

Multiple sources at publisher Electronic Arts said the game is no longer in the works, though it's unclear as to why the game has been shut down or if there will be layoffs as a result.

EA declined to comment when approached by Game Informer.

The game, which was announced during Gamescom less than a year ago, was in development at Star Wars: The Old Republic developer BioWare Austin.

Set in a modern fantasy world, Shadow Realms was described as an "online-only" RPG that would offer cooperative 4v1 gameplay. Four players can fight against an enemy known as the Shadowlord, or you can play as the Shadowlord.

"This game brings us back to our roots in the realm of classic Pen and Paper RPG, but also delivers something that’s completely new and innovative for our fans," Hickman said at the time. "Shadow Realms is a new BioWare RPG that has the hallmarks of all BioWare games with a rich story, a unique world setting, and deep combat progression, but built as an interactive experience that evolves the genre and broadens the appeal to online gamers all over the world."

We'll have more information about the fate of Shadow Realms as it becomes available.

Not a tear was shed...

Actually, it looked dead from the beginning, mainly because nobody (NOBODY) could understand what the game was. Including the devs!

Avatar image for crimsonbrute

I've never knew this game even existed and from the looks of it, I'm glad I didn't.

Avatar image for holenjd

<< LINK REMOVED >> I didn't know they were working on it either. They do need to grow and do some new IPs so I am sad for that even though I don't play MMOs.

Avatar image for Shilleto

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> it was showed off at a game show last year

Avatar image for Evil_Sidekick

Like the Space Terran Marine said in the Spacecraft II teaser a couple of years ago: "It's about time!"

It sounded like crap, and it would be really pathetic for Bioware, once a proud SP developer, to make a online only game.

Avatar image for Kyrylo

make sp instead!

Avatar image for redskinStu

Probably working on another ending for Mass Effect 3.

Avatar image for Ripper_TV

<< LINK REMOVED >> Whole game was supposed to be the 5th ending to ME3.

Avatar image for deusvex

Why would they do that? ME3 had a great ending.

Avatar image for denislav1981

Seeing as how it would have most probably been seen as an Evolve clone, it's not surprising Bioware are cutting their losses at their earliest convenience. Better cancel the game now than risk a huge flop at release.

Avatar image for musalala

And nothing of value was lost

Avatar image for h20-xcv

<< LINK REMOVED >> Agreed. At least they saw the garbage and decided not to continue.

Good. I for one am very glad to see Bioware leaning away from some online MMO thing, and focusing more on what they're all about, which is excellent campaigns and story-based decision-making games. Hopefully, this will put even more manpower at the disposal of the Next Mass Effect game.

What a shameful and depressing time it is when we live in a day where gamers rejoice over cancelled games.

Avatar image for Kinguard73

No jobs lost is great and honestly what I would want is that MMO to head for consoles. Consoles need MMos badly. they got the power so give them the games.

Avatar image for sickko

to be honest i wasn't excited at all when i heard about this and same after seeing some gameplay, i love BioWare but this isn't their scene... and The Old Republic has a big potential, they just need to get their shit together

Avatar image for holifeet

Holy crap! And here was me thinking this was their biggest project. Wasn't there a huge fuss over preview trailers and a big buzz about what was coming? It did sound to me like it was The Secret World streamlined, but I have to say I'm surprised.

Avatar image for Damazig

After seeing what they did with Dragon Age Inquisition's crappy PC version, and now this, you can clearly see Bioware doesn't really care about PC that much anymore, so no more of my money on Bioware games, and I was an old school hardcore fan of the company.

Avatar image for isshiah

Nothing of quality was lost and no f**ks were given.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Then why leave a comment?

Avatar image for VakarianGirl

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> 'Cause he wanted to look cool.

Avatar image for isshiah

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> i am the essence of cool.

Samuel L Jackson is positively uncool in comparison to my fine self.

Also, Garrus is mine.

They showed this off far too early, pretty much just so they had something for E3. EA took the negative feedback and used it as an excuse to put them back to work on that terrible MMO. Still Bioware's previous multiplayer efforts have been serviceable at best so I wasn't expecting great things.

Avatar image for egger7577

This sounds just like Evolve so I assume they were going for originality but quit once they realized Evolve was coming out..

Avatar image for Revenant_K

<< LINK REMOVED >> maybe they quit because they realized Evolve NOT doing so well.

Avatar image for Talavaj

<< LINK REMOVED >> 4V1 doesn't mean it was anything like Evolve, it was a dungeon crawler where one player controlled monster spawns and traps within the dungeon while the other 4 had to fight it through and eventually face a player controlled boss.

Avatar image for longestsprout

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's pretty flimsy. More like the usual, they just didn't like how it was turning out. They pump so much money into these things that the problems have to be substantial before they call it quits.

Avatar image for egger7577

Fyi the word be@ting flags your post.

This game was going to be totally lame. Finally a good decision Bioware!

Avatar image for Dark_Wr4ith

I miss the old Bioware.

Avatar image for Jarten

I personally was looking forward to Shadow Realms. I thought it had a great concept and I liked what I had seen of it at their PAX panel when they showed off what they had of it. I'm not even normally into multiplayer games and lean more towards single player, but I thought this one had some good potential. Guess it's another good sounding game going dead before arrival.

Avatar image for xsonicchaos

The concept was anything but original, but to each their own. Some people find treasures in every turd.

Avatar image for liron99

good riddance. about time they'll fix swtor.

Avatar image for dani_i89

Pre order cancelled :(

Lol jks. Thank Christ for that. This idea was terrible at best. While you're at it, please cancel The Old Republic, and bring back Knight of the Old Republic. SINGLE PLAYER ONLY.

Avatar image for lordshifu

A great decision from bioware!

Avatar image for bigruss51

Wow that was my first time seeing the trailer for this game. Credit where credit is do for calling this one off.

Avatar image for zerohournow

sounds like Evolve beat them to market and they said "frack it"....

Avatar image for BattleOfficer

"We fully recognize that this news is disappointing to some of our fans"

Not really since Shadow Realms was just a poorly design cash grab, made by a wannabe "Bioware" Studio, it's not a Bioware unless you have anything to show for it.. no not SWTOR, when the veteran Bioware employee we all know how that turned out.

Avatar image for Kendojin

Does this mean i can finally get my Sonic Chronicles sequel? Highly doubtful but I thought I'd ask anyway

Avatar image for KiLLLeR150

Good. No one I know wanted to play a MP, non-BioWare type game from BioWare. Stick to what you excel at: single-player RPGs with incredible stories, worlds and characters. MP is the complete opposite of that.

Avatar image for godfather830

This is a good thing, imo. This game had failure written all over it.

Avatar image for crusaderprophet

LOL just LOL, and what a relief.
