BioWare Launching Its New Action Franchise By April 2018 [UPDATE]

EA teases some details about the new BioWare game.

Update: Following EA's announcement today, BioWare's Aaryn Flynn has shared a bit more about the studio's upcoming game.

"There's much more to say in the coming months, but for now, I wanted to offer this additional background," he said on BioWare's blog. "In 2012, we began crafting a new universe full of new characters, stories, and gameplay. Our ambition is simple: Draw upon 20-plus years of development knowledge and lessons to create something fun and new for you to enjoy with your friends. There's nothing quite as exciting as building a new IP from scratch, and it will be even more thrilling for us to share more with you in the future."

The original story follows.

BioWare's previously confirmed new franchise will be out in the next 14 months, launching by April 2018, EA said today.

During a call with investors, EA CEO Andrew Wilson indicated the new game will be out by the end of the upcoming fiscal year, which runs through March 31, 2018. He only spoke of it at a high level, saying it features "new concepts" and could disrupt the action game space.

No Caption Provided

"At the end of the fiscal year, our BioWare studio will be delivering an all-new IP, a clean-sheet design with new concepts, new gameplay mechanics, and new stories set in a unique new universe," Wilson said. "This game has the potential to fundamentally disrupt the way people think about an action title, bringing friends together to play in an exhilarating new way. We're very excited about the future of this new franchise and its ability to attract a large, global audience."

When pressed for further details during the Q&A portion of the call, Wilson described it as an action-adventure game, rather than an RPG, and suggest it will blend genres.

"What we're seeing more and more is genre-melding, which is great components of a number of different genres really kind of coming together into single games," he said. "And so when you think about this game, you should be thinking about the great RPG character development and storyline progression that BioWare is known for, but in a world of greater action and greater adventure, which is growing to be one of the larger categories in games."

He also confirmed it will be a wholly owned IP, meaning it isn't based on another company's franchise (as with, say, Star Wars Battlefront).

BioWare manager Aaryn Flynn previously spoke about an unannounced new IP from the studio, indicating it would be a while before any specifics were shared.

"We're not going to talk about it until we're confident about what it's going to be and everything," he said in November. "We've been doing reviews with [Wilson], and I think he likes it. So, knock on wood, we'll keep working on it and we'll keep doing it. Hopefully you'll hear more about that once [Mass Effect] Andromeda's done and we've satisfied fans with that game."

He continued, "You have to ask yourself, 'Do you want to do something that fiercly different or do you want to do something that's very recognizable?' 'Do you want to take something that you've done and put a spin on it, or do you want to wipe the slate clean and say what would we do in this.' And for us, what we said was we're BioWare, so we have a certain kind of game that we love making and we know our fans would love, so we started with that and that's a game that has as its heart stories and storytelling. So we decided we're going to stick with that. We're not just going to walk away from that. Once we agreed on that, everything started to fall into place."

Further specifics--including a name, settings, or platforms--remain unknown. As Flynn alluded to, don't expect to hear much more until after Andromeda's launch in March.

And this is what's wrong with gaming right now. Too many studios worry about expanding their audience by creating a game that appeals to everyone, the problem with that is; gaming tastes vary too widely for that to work. In the end, when you try to make everyone happy, you end up making nobody happy. It's why we have so many bland, generic games that all feel the same.

Do what you do best and in Bioware's case, that's make great RPG's

@tevic: That's actually the bit that makes me most interested. I'd be way down for a good co-op RPG, with more story than Diablo and less character focused than Dragon Age. That's a niche I don't think has been served all the well yet. I love a good RPG, but with the revival for the old Baldur's Gate style game, I don't really need Bioware for those games anymore.

@baral-o: Agreed but I liked everything else that was said. Hopefully if there is an online component its like a Dark Souls type of online interaction, or an optional co op experience of some kind.

It's an Overwatch style clone.

@Judas_III: No I think EA pointed earlier towards the GTA-Assassin's creed open-world genre.

I hope this means a new Dragon Age game by the end of this year. The last one was a let down because it didn't have well developed NPCs and side stories, but I am still hopeful there will be a improvement.

@pdfanboy: yes, did you actually read my post? I am hoping that the April 2018 date for the new game means that they will push a new DA release no later than December 2017. They can't time the games too close together or else they will compete with each other's thunder.

@streamline: Two BioWare games in 2017? lol, no way that's gonna happen. A company like BioWare usually releases one AAA game every year, at most. This year is Mass Effect: Andromeda's turn.

@pdfanboy: timing is far enough apart to not interfere with sales, but yes, possible that they don't have enough resources to handle it. I am thinking if it from a marketing and money making perspective.

@streamline: I suspect BioWare has currently two teams: one for the new IP, the other for Mass Effect. The Mass Effect team will certainly continue supporting the game with DLCs and multiplayer packs over the course of this year. Anyway, sorry for misunderstanding your initial post, as I thought it didn't make any sense :)

@pdfanboy: DA:O and ME2 came out within 4 months of each other so it's not too far a stretch. Although you're probably right about their resources being a little thin with both these games coming out.

@tainted0ne: That was 7 years ago. Games were not as demanding back then, not to mention the fact that EA/BioWare has changed a lot over the last 5 years.

@pdfanboy: Well BioWare does have 3 studios and it's not really like games are harder to make now a days, marketing cycles are just longer.

@Batosai001: Oh I forgot Jade Empire. It's still my favorite game of Bioware. Really dig the fantasy/medieval Chinese setting and the combat system based on Chinese martial arts. It's really shame they don't make the sequel because the sales was lower what they'd expected.

Here comes the forced multiplayer shoved down from EA. How much you want to bet it's actually going to be an Overwatch or Destiny clone? Another "game as a service" that's really just a pipeline for DLC and microtransactions

@darthrevenx: Oh yeah... I was pretty excited about that when they were hyping it up. It was something different for them, but it sounded like it could have been a blast. I am always looking out for good co-op stuff, because I've always got at least two people asking me for a new one to start playing.

Edit: Also anyone know any games like that? It was sort of going to be a 3rd person action-oriented co-op dungeon crawler, which sort of reminds me of a natural progression of DDO (Dungeons and Dragons Online) would be to me. I've got someone who has really been wanting to play one like that, but I really can't find anything like it. Was hoping Vermintide would be close but it's sort of just Warhammer Left4Dead, which is just fine, but not what we were looking for.

So if Andromeda ends up sucking it will be because EA is pushing them to get this new franchise off the ground ASAP. Frankly I don't see how you can launch a AAA new franchise 14 months after Andromeda unless they've been working on both at the same time so which also doesn't bode well if Andromeda isn't getting full, undivided attention.

@dryvlyne: Yes because of course all the other studios stop working when one has a project - It's their hidden directive - "Don't work on more than one project at once - it confuses our other Studios"
