BioWare Boss Talks How Anthem Was Affected By Lack Of Mass Effect: Andromeda DLC

Casey Hudson publishes the first of several blog posts about BioWare.

Things have been somewhat quiet from BioWare since the middle of last year, when changes were made to Mass Effect: Andromeda developer BioWare Montreal in the wake of that game's release. Now, with BioWare Edmonton's new game Anthem coming up, BioWare general manager Casey Hudson has provided the first in a series of "studio updates," which touches on the fact that Andromeda never got the story DLC many fans were hoping for.

Hudson served as a director on the original Mass Effect trilogy and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic before leaving BioWare. He then returned in 2017 as BioWare was facing some upheaval. "When I returned to BioWare last summer, Mass Effect: Andromeda had just been released, and there was a significant movement among players asking for a story DLC that would answer questions surrounding the fate of the quarians," he said in the new blog post. "As you know, we were not able to deliver story DLC for Andromeda--this was as frustrating for us as it was for players, and it was something we knew we had to solve in future games."

He doesn't offer much in the way of specifics, but he does suggest that the situation has had a direct impact on how BioWare approached Anthem, its new Destiny-esque open-world action game.

"That experience ultimately became a defining moment in refocusing BioWare's mission," he continued. "We need to delight players with new experiences and innovation, but we must stay focused on the importance of the world, character, and storytelling elements that players expect from our games. And our games must be designed to continue delivering new stories and experiences, in an ongoing relationship with players in the worlds we're evolving together.

"It's in that spirit that we are working through production on Anthem--a game designed to create a whole new world of story and character that you can experience with friends in an ongoing series of adventures. It will be unlike anything you've played, but if we do it right, it will feel very distinctly BioWare."

Hudson teased that his new blog post will share "more about how our updated studio mission is helping to focus our work on Anthem and the games that will follow."

Anthem had been scheduled for release this year, but back in January, EA announced it had been delayed (though it puzzlingly claimed it was not actually a delay). It still does not have a specific date but is due out sometime in early 2019.

MEA was a decent game hampered by comparison with a stronger preceding trilogy and a buggy launch. If only around 16% buy the DLC (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/dlc-and-microtransactions-new-study-shows-how-game/1100-6444522/) and fewer people bought the game because of its rough launch, the costs of making the DLC vs likely sales may simply not have added up.

Actions matter more than words, but reading the words is a positive sign that needs to be followed up with deeds. If Anthem has great stories, great characters and great gameplay at its core, I'm in.

LOL. There was no story DLC in Andromeda because it was _bloody terrible_ and everyone knew it.

"this was as frustrating for us as it was for players, and it was something we knew we had to solve in future games."

This makes no sensd unless EA blocked them from making said DLC. Why would gamers trust they could do it in the future if they couldn't do it now, especially since many of the people involved in the atrocity that was ME:A were still working on the new game? Didn't Casey Hudson leave again?

I spent all of my effort for detailed posts regarding ME:A when I played it, so not doing so again for those commenting trying to retread old issues. All of your arguments have been made, as well as opposed with likewise informed opinions, so maybe you'll have better luck going back to old threads on almost every gaming site & making your case? Doing so, you'll probably read some comments that will save you time writing here, since you'll see that some are identical to what you've said (except, like me, they were people that paid full retail, many on collector's editions, etc, not $10). Maybe you were those people then and want more traction now? Maybe not, but certainly, if this was a $10 game, people would have different expectations.

I still believe Anthem was delayed because of the micro-transaction fustercluck that was BattleFront 2. They probably had a lot of the game locked behind a paywall and decided not to do it as they are already in trouble over them locking progression behind crate drops.

Funny thing I thought if anthem was to make it original release window, it would be a rushed mess..

EA missed SW; BF 2 sales and they need something this year outside of battlefield to bring the cash in..

I am seriously starting to believe that anyone who says Andromeda was trash never played it. The original trilogy was hands down my favorite game series, but Andromeda really surpassed each individual game in so many areas. The exploration and combat are by far the best in the series. Same goes for the actual character building, including being able to pick any of the powers available instead of picking a class every play-through, the weapons and armor crafting. The worlds were beautifully detailed, and the story, while lacking in some areas, was a great beginning to what I expected would be a new trilogy.

People really need to stop spreading other people's opinions and start making their own. MEA has so many good things going for it... I'm really hopeful for Andromeda 2, and so are the vast majority of the people I talk to in multiplayer, which is also excellent.

I have to point out how unfair it is to compare it to the OT, simply because of the nostalgia factor and the fact that 3 > 1 (always). It wasn't perfect, and there were obvious hiccups during the development process, but it is a great game nonetheless.

@solofighter: many, or most, of the people clamoring for gun control have never fired or owned a gun. Does that make their vote not count if they are single issue voters? Those people you suspect still spend money, so they are listened to. Sure, I think we should have IQ tests, or some manner of making sure voters actually know what they are voting for & not being used by special interest groups, just as I wish that people personally invested in a game (they actually purchased it, or played it in some form) would be heard regarding criticisms & future game development. Both of those would make the world a better place, but no political party or company is satisfied with those it already has allegiance from, they want more, so they will always be geared toward some fictional future aspirational audience, unfortunately. Although I vehemently disagree with your opinions regarding ME:A, and I agree that people lie and are used by others for reasons usually not apparent to the person seemingly misrepresenting themselves, that's a part of human culture that's here to stay, sadly. I don't want to say, "get used to it," but it seems like you are newly aware that this takes place for some reason by the context, so.... Maybe find ways to combat that in general instead of complaining about it affecting you on a gaming website with regard to a single game. That's akin to trying to remove the leg of a single flea to try & stop flea bites in an infested country farm.

@twztid13: Mate, that's a terrible analogy. Comparing peoples opinion on whether a game is good to an issue which kills tens of thousands of people every year.

People who have never fired a gun don't need to have to know that gun control works and will save many, many lives. That's like saying people whom have never had sex can't know for certain that it makes babies. It's just a fact.

@lukasr: when there are over 300 million guns in our country & we have a second amendment, all that does is disarm law abiding citizens. They are uninformed, and don't understand the implications of what they support. They don't even know what constitutes each type of firearm, so they throw about "assault weapons", which were banned in the 1930's. I'll stop there, because my point was tongue in cheek, and you helped make it, that the people who haven't played mass effect Andromeda can make an informed decision without playing it.

After having bought ME:A during an Amazon EA flash sale (got it for $10), I booted up the game with pretty low expectations based on the mediocre reviews it received at launch last year. What I found was an epic gaming experience only partially obscured by the well-documented technical glitches. It was not released as a finished product, and could have used another 6 months or so of polishing and bug squashes.

After I finished the game (I did every main and side quest I could find), I was a bit numb. I wanted more. So, I bought ME:3, and enjoyed that too. ME:3 had higher highs story-wise than ME:A, but ME:A had much more content, and the better overall story (especially the ending).

Then I finished ME:3, now what? I played DA:I a couple of years ago (loved it) so I was running out of ideas to keep this RPG train a' rollin'.

Then I remembered SWTOR, and so now I'm playing that game and really enjoying it - still has an active if smallish community - the amount of content is mind-blowing so I'm thinking I'm good for RPG for the foreseeable future.

ME:A should have had DLC, but the premature release of an unfinished game killed any anticipation or momentum for DLC. Which is sad, because if any game deserves a second chance at life based on its promise alone it's ME:A.

@paulvicory: "It was not released as a finished product."

What? It most certainly was. It may not have been a finished product, but it was certainly released as one. If it was in an early release on Steam or Xbox, then you'd have a point. As it stands in reality, you don't. Maybe you misspoke or formed the sentence incorrectly?

@twztid13: Yes ME:A was officially released as a finished product. But my point was that it was released prematurely. Another 6 months or so of polishing and bug fixes would have resulted in a much better product; it would have been much more favorably reviewed. And presumably would have sold well enough to justify creating additional content for it.

I enjoyed Andromeda single player, was hoping for DLC which never came. The NPC's did lack a feeling of being needed as followers. There was no feeling in their conversations. But figured it would improve with ep2. oh well, maybe Bethesda will have a better single player space game now that Bio quit Andromeda.

Andromeda was... OK at best, still nothing compared to the original trilogy IMO, but nevertheless, had my fun with it.

Hopefully with Hudson back they can pick up the pieces and make ME awesome again.

Then again, EA.

As a big fan of ME I enjoyed Andromeda, despite its flaws, and I'll replay it some day. Don't really care about the characters though so don't miss dlc. If they want to continue the series they need to use the writers of ME1 and ME2 who gave us such epic stories and characters.

Andromeda was pretty trash in every arena except gunplay and the environments. The balance of abilities combined with movement options was incredible. The locales were beautiful. But everything else from character models to the voice acting to the story was pretty ass.

That being said, I was INCREDIBLY disappointed when it was announced Andromeda would not get any DLC. The big Quarian cliffhanger was one of the few things that excited me about the game. Could have had them come in and their target system is now super hostile. Then you find them and they break the news. The Reapers were real. They attacked. The Quarian seed ship barely got away. Maybe even have a population of Hanar and Volus on their ship. And they don't know what's happened to the Milky Way.

But nope.

@newbpwnr:I can;t help but agree, BioWare always told good stories but with EA holding the coin purse I just know we going to get a game with microtransactions that may not be pay to win but certainly will detract from base game content, meaning the much content we would and should have got in the base game will only be available if you pay for it at the game shops...this is EA's market strategy and it wont change until idiots who support it STOP

You know, with everyone knocking the story and all that, I just really had to say...

The banter was DEEP. I cannot believe how much banter there is in this game. I used two particular characters so much and yet they never ran out of new things to talk about! I couldn't believe it. Not a single repeated conversation between them. Say what you want about the characters but the sheer amount of recorded dialogue in this game is impressive.

I'm honestly baffled how people think Andromeda is a bad game. Sure it had some technical flaws at first but they patched it. I barely noticed them in the first place. I finished it and thought it was great.

@Jigen32: I think part of the situation is people had very high expectations, considering the earlier games are some of the best RPG games ever. If this had been put out by a no-name company, I don;t think it would have gotten as panned.

I felt it was an ok game. I had fun for a while, but abandoned it at what I guess would be 1/2 way through. Compared to the earlier three which I played to the very end and was sad when they were over.

@Jigen32: It's not just the technical flaws it's characters being ugly for the sake of being ugly. Like the model they got for Sara Ryders likeness looks nothing like the in game character... I don't know whats going on at the studio but whoever is leading them has a real agenda. Like there is a character you just met that blurts out they are an transsexual for no apparent reason.

Inviting Anita Sarkeseen (think that's how you spell it) to the studio is also a real concern and actually angered some members of Bioware.

@Jigen32: It wasn't terrible like some try to make it out to be, but it was a big step down from playing one of the best trilogies of all time. It just didn't pull me in like the games in the original trilogy did. It took me a long time to beat it and it was 1 and done for me. Compare that to the dozen or so playthroughs I have of the original series(which I would love to see released on Switch)

Interesting that he does not say Andromeda was a bad story game with bad characters and many bugs for being an unpolished game. That is why the game sales were low and no DLC was put on sale.

So what you're saying is that Anthem's going to have a lot of DLC. Fantastic. I can't tell you how excited I am to hear that. I'll reserve final judgement for when the thing launches and the first few months of its run... but the initial judgement to that and the publisher being EA is "go **** yourself".

@Ohaidere: I dunno going from DAI to Witcher 3 made me realise how awful DAI's side quests/activities were. I just want another DA origins doesn't even need to be open world. They should make awesome hub worlds cause that's what they are best at.

@gamingdevil800: The side quests were tedious, but I actually overall preferred DAI to Witcher 3 (though W3 was better made), but I felt they were very different as far as gameplay went.

I loved Origins though. I'm all for a non openworld game again.
