BioShock universe a "rich creative canvas" for many new stories

2K thanks Ken Levine for his contribution to the franchise and says universe is ripe for more stories.

With Irrational Games and Ken Levine moving onto a new project for Take-Two, many fans might wonder what that means for the BioShock franchise. According to 2K, which is now in full control of the series, there remains great creative opportunity to tell more stories in the franchise.

No Caption Provided

"The BioShock universe remains a rich creative canvas for many untold stories, and we look forward to exploring the next BioShock experience," a 2K Games representative told GameSpot today.

Levine is working on a "smaller, more entrepreneurial" project for Take-Two, which owns 2K, but it's unclear if he will have any hand in future BioShock games. Whatever the case, 2K said it owes Levine--and the rest of the staffers at Irrational--a great debt for their work on the series.

"BioShock is one of our most beloved and critically acclaimed franchises, and we are indebted to Ken and the talented team at Irrational Games for their contributions to the series with BioShock and BioShock Infinite; the latter being one of the most decorated games of 2013," the representative said.

To date, the BioShock franchise has spanned three core titles: BioShock (2007), BioShock 2 (2010), and BioShock: Infinite (2013). A PlayStation Vita version was announced during E3 2011, but so far, nothing has been shown of the game outside of a logo. This week, 2K said it had "no update" to provide on the game.

A BioShock movie was announced in 2008 and actually entered production with Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski attached to direct. But Levine would later kill the project after Verbinski dropped out because Levine "didn't really see the match" with its latest director, believed to be Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later, Intact).

I am surprised to say the least about what people are saying about Bioshock in these comments. How does 3 games (developed by separate devs)in now SEVEN years even come close to milking? Especially when Infinite pretty much stands seperate from 1 and 2. If we get another Bioshock game...which I PRAY we do. Its at LEAST 3 years from this point right now...at LEAST which would put us at 4 games in 10 years. Which for COD will be about 25 games and Assassins Creed 15. If COD didn't exist which isn't even in the same universe as Bioshock in terms of development I doubt we would hear the word "milking" anytime a sequel is mentioned.

If 2K plan on making more Bioshock games I don't understand why they couldn't have made the effort of keeping as much of the team together at Irrational as possible. No matter what angle I look at it from I just can't understand why anyone had to lose their job.

I definitely loved the concept and somewhat the execution of the first 2 games. Infinite had so much potential but fully reneged on the roleplaying aspects.

When there's atleast limited roleplaying in the Bioshock universe give me a call. I mean morally grey decisions, not this choose good or evil crap.

Bioshock sucked from the beginning, I will never understand the hype surrounding this franchise. Whatever this guys "creative" inspiration is for laying off his employee's I'm sure it will be as bad as bioshock.

He's probably going to make some crappy little mobile game.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Cool story, bro. If you didn't like the game, that's fine, but the first game was insanely influential for its unusual and witty storytelling within the first-person perspective. The gameplay is bog standard for the FPS genre, but the atmosphere, detailed worlds (both Rapture and Columbia), and overall sense of mystery and wonder are why people love this franchise.

You can do some cool things with Bioshock so I guess I can give any news games a try. If they screw up though I'm getting the hell out.

I'd welcome a BioShock game on the Vita, but other than that I don't see what more can be done with the franchise.

I so hope Levine actually left due to the recent Zone animation. He's been such a nutjob spaz about any sort of sexy fanworks of his "e-daughter" Elizabeth, it's hilarious.

I don't see how you can have anymore Bioshock games after Infinite. It pretty much wrapped up everything, if they wanted more games they should have held off on Infinite.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> In theory yes, there are a lot of possibilities. But to what degree? Unless they stay in the same time line it would get extremely repetitive. I, for one, don't want to see a bunch of rehased cities with a man and a light house, it would end up getting milked beyond belief. If they can find a way to stay in the same time line/city/character group it could be interesting. In the end it would probably get really confusing and clustered though.

2K and not Levine made the best BioShock game IMO, and although the chances of it being shamelessly milked are pretty high, it's still better off being in 2K's hands. Heck, all Levine really did is just make a dumbed-down immitation of System Shock 2 anyway.

Well if quantum mechanics is anything to go by there is technically an infinite number of alternate universes your could utilise. Thinking about it, it is a good job this wasn't EAs game. Imagine if EA had a franchise that was built on a potential infinite number of worlds? We'd have a yearly release for the rest of time.

I think they should go to outer Space in for the next Bioshock with like a Rapture/Columbia space station. Seems like a plausible next move for the franchise. Reclaim that feeling of isolation and fear from the first game. It could build off of alternate reality 1950s lore from the first moon walk and the conspiracy theories of aliens and stuff. Mix in all the other trademark Bioshock stuff like plasmids, big daddy's, and audio boxes then have it looking all awesome on next gen only hardware. I would buy it. So would you I bet.

@fredyellowone @budweiserman This is unbelievable. You mean to tell me I just described a 15 year old game perfectly in a very very short story/setting synapsis in this 100% unimaginative copyright infringement free world we live in? Wow. Seriously. That's amazing. It's like I'm a god or something.......Being serious though. Far Cry 1 and Far Cry 3 are basically the same game.....in setting. Are they the same game and experience? No.....Basically what I'm saying is, if Bioshock Blue Moon come out (yea, that's what I'm calling it. Suck it, It's totally original) Anyway, if Blue Moon come and it improved on everything that is BioShock and System Shock you mean to tell me you would be all like, "dude, that is so System Shock. I'm just gonna play System Shock 2 on my old ass PC with windows 2000. F*ck that game!" What am I saying. Of course you would.

I also hope the poor 185 people who a) helped make on the best games of last year and b) just got laid off aren't reading these comments.

Bad enough to be unemployed. Salt in the wound that the people who played a game you slaved over think you didn't have a damn thing to do with why it was good.

@olddadgamer I don't think the negativity in a place like this is enough to hurt the pride of the people who work on great projects. Speaking from personal experience, I've never helped create a game, but I have helped design and build structures, and the pride I take from that, and viewing the final product, is a tough thing to diminish! It'd take more than a few haters, that's for sure!

It may be ripe for more stories, but if Ken Levine was the reason those stories were so awesome, then they'll have a hard time getting someone to match the brilliance.

Jesus, Levine must have handed out the spiked Kool Aid on the way out. Look this dude is talented as hell, really he is, but he's also a megalomaniac and a great self promoter.

It's garbage without him? It's gonna be F2P with microtransactions? He is the only developer than can make great games, even with this universe?

Seriously. If Ken is reading these comments, he's dancing the happy dance. And he's giving his PR guy a raise.
