BioShock universe a "rich creative canvas" for many new stories

2K thanks Ken Levine for his contribution to the franchise and says universe is ripe for more stories.

With Irrational Games and Ken Levine moving onto a new project for Take-Two, many fans might wonder what that means for the BioShock franchise. According to 2K, which is now in full control of the series, there remains great creative opportunity to tell more stories in the franchise.

"The BioShock universe remains a rich creative canvas for many untold stories, and we look forward to exploring the next BioShock experience," a 2K Games representative told GameSpot today.

Levine is working on a "smaller, more entrepreneurial" project for Take-Two, which owns 2K, but it's unclear if he will have any hand in future BioShock games. Whatever the case, 2K said it owes Levine--and the rest of the staffers at Irrational--a great debt for their work on the series.

"BioShock is one of our most beloved and critically acclaimed franchises, and we are indebted to Ken and the talented team at Irrational Games for their contributions to the series with BioShock and BioShock Infinite; the latter being one of the most decorated games of 2013," the representative said.

To date, the BioShock franchise has spanned three core titles: BioShock (2007), BioShock 2 (2010), and BioShock: Infinite (2013). A PlayStation Vita version was announced during E3 2011, but so far, nothing has been shown of the game outside of a logo. This week, 2K said it had "no update" to provide on the game.

A BioShock movie was announced in 2008 and actually entered production with Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski attached to direct. But Levine would later kill the project after Verbinski dropped out because Levine "didn't really see the match" with its latest director, believed to be Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later, Intact).

Six'll come out in six months and have microtransactions! Look at the decision to put multiplayer in Five! Took away so many resources from the single player I finished it in two hours! Profiteers!

To the topic title, of course it is. I think it's really unfortunate we won't have the team that was behind the original Bioshock and Infinite on it, but I liked two (just as much as Infinite really overall), and I'll definitely give others a chance on the franchise and be excited for it. I just hope it doesn't turn into an Assassin's Creed/Call of Duty type deal, though that's not saying those can't be done well.

<< LINK REMOVED >> See my post below. A vast number of the team that did one has been at 2K marin for years and years. Indeed, MOST of the people who made the original didn't make infinite. There is no team that was "behind the original Bioshock and infinite."

2K publishes. They published Levine's games. Were those poo?

@olddadgamer @darkasylumYes, they published LEVINE'S games--games he created and supervised. Now that they hold all the rights to the ip, chances are they'll only screw it up from here.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Oh come now. Bioshock 2 was good. It's silly to say "It wasn't as good as 1, therefore it sucked." If "not as good as 1" means it sucks, then pretty much every game ever sucks. 2 sits at an 88 on metacritic. It's far better than the average game.

And really, it's the universe that matters. Neither of Levine's games was perfect. The last third of 1 dragged like hell, and there were serious flaws with infinite as well.

2K, unlike other publishers, has the sense to let good developers develop. Levine himself is sticking with them.

I think that there were plenty of other people that made Levine's games good. Levine would like you to think it was all him, but no AAA game is made by one guy.

Should've called Infinite "AeroShock" and kept it separate from "BioShock". I know--that horse is dead. I'll stop swinging.

Ok, while we're speculating with hardly any info, let me throw my hat in:

So there's this studio out there called 2K Marin. 2K Marin's last game flopped, so one would think they would've shuttered that, but they didn't. So what?

Not only did they do Bioshock 2, more than HALF of the people who did bioshock 2 did Bioshock 1 at Irrational. They know the universe, and they've done the switch from Boston to San Fran already.

And they're hiring. And they'll be at that little job fair at Irrational.

Which means a studio owned by 2K, a studio that has no business continuing to exist after The Bureau, is a) somehow financially viable enough to be hiring and b) just so happens to be the largest collection of experts in the Bioshock universe in the industry.

Hmmmm.

Maybe the franchise IS in expert hands. And before we go all "Without Levine it sucks," look at the credits for the games. Hundreds of people. Hundreds.

Many of whom are having a little reunion by the bay.

Bioshock 2 is a good game, but it doesn't even come close to how magnificent the original and Infinite above all, are.

Let's hope they know what they're doing, 2K is a pretty good publisher after all.

"BioShock is one of our most beloved and critically acclaimed franchises"

Um... let me tweak that...

"BioShock 1 and BioShock Infinite are our most beloved and critically acclaimed games. Without Ken Levine, don't expect much."

Yep. Fixed.

Without Ken Levine and the guys from irrational games , I see very little hope for the franchise .

They and only THEY made this amazing universe possible and without them this universe will never be the same .

As much as I find Bioshocks world interesting, I never felt like it met its true potential. I dont hate linear games...but if your going to create a world with such a fantastic premise, I would prefer to be given the free reign to explore it.

<< LINK REMOVED >> While that is true, and having an open world would be better for immersion, I feel as though to keep the open world from being pointless (like L.A. Noire) it would need some sort of side activities. Bioshock has always tended to be very focussed so I wonder whether side missions would take away from it.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>I agree with you there. L.A. Noire was a fantastic story-driven game with overall decent gameplay, but I never felt compelled to explore 1940s L.A. at all, apart from the arbitrary collectibles and side missions. If a game is going to be story-driven, let it be linear so people can appreciate it more. You can detail a linear experience to make it feel alive. Hell, look at God of War as a great example of that formula. Open-world games are meant for you to roleplay and let loose, in my opinion. If it has a great story, that's a bonus.
