BioShock PC Remasters Having Issues; Only Slightly Better, Steam Reviews Say

Steam users have reported that the BioShock 1 and 2 remasters have a slew of problems.

We recently found out that BioShock: The Collection blocks streaming on consoles, and now the PC remasters are getting a fair bit of flack. Steam users have reported that the original BioShock features new and old bugs and lacks a variety of settings that are commonly found in PC games.

Many users claim that the game is not remastered but instead "retextured," as it only features "better lighting and a VERY slightly sharper texture pack," says user Hotshot. Crashes are also present for many players trying to make their way into Rapture via the Bathysphere.

Now Playing: BioShock Retrospective

Another common issue players are experiencing is mouse acceleration, which was present in the original game. Steam user Cheesus said, "They didn't touch all the mouse issues that plagued the original. Mouse sensitivity slider doesn't work right. If you lower the sensitivity to 1, the mouse cursor doesn't [move] unless you fling your mouse." Players have also criticized the lack of an FOV slider.

BioShock 2 has gotten its fair share of negative reviews as well, with users saying its graphical settings are minimal and the visuals are only marginally better.

Despite the bad reviews, BioShock 1 and 2 Remastered have almost the same amount of positive critiques, though some users like DigitalCreation still note that the original game's "graphics are only slightly better."

No Caption Provided

"It's certainly not terrible, but it's lazy," DigitalCreation said. "Old bugs from the original game are still present and the graphics are only slightly better. This is the best version only because of the small graphics update."

Many players have noted that it's best played with a controller, something many PC players take issue with given the platform's added precision of keyboard and mouse.

We've contacted 2K for comment on the PC versions' issues and will keep you updated as we hear back. BioShock Infinite is unaffected by the problems mentioned above, as it did not receive a remastered edition.

The BioShock remasters came out on PC two days after the full collection released on consoles. We've tested BioShock: The Collection on PS4 and Xbox One, and they run well with infrequent frame rate drops. You can read our preview of the console version here, which called them "gorgeous monuments to a beloved series."

Just installed the remaster last night. With the exception of the typically poor characters models of the time, the game looks pretty good at 4k on PC. I haven't played it in several years so I can't directly compare it. It's still visually acceptable. Thankfully, the story and the level design add a significant deterrent to any graphics issues. In other words, the game is so good it doesn't rely on the graphics like most games do, they are only a bonus.

I wish I could say I'm surprised, but it seems like almost every other pc release this last year has arrived somewhat broken.

@jizam_kizam: Remove PC from and replace it with AAA and then it's a very accurate. Games have had a lot of issues on all platforms this year.

But yeah it's more frequent on PC because a dev's laziness shows through very easily on a platform that the players have high standards and those standards aren't made a necessary condition to be sold by the platform owner like on console.

Now this is a fine example of genuine video game journalism as opposed to vapid clickbait (I'm looking at you, Eddie Makuch; albeit you have improved in recent months). Good video game journalism should help the reader make an informed opinion about where to spend his hard earned dollar. I was tentatively interested in the Bioshock remaster but now I think I'll pass or wait for a bargain bin sale. Thank you, Mr. Paget.

When devs creativity dry up and they have no games to release, they remaster.

@howthegodzkill: The BioShock developers didn't do these remasters, nor do they exist as a studio anymore.

@Verenti: Only if you owned the originals. They're still selling these to anybody else. The problems are problems, regardless of price.

Another "remaster" same story: same graphics, but introduces new bugs, problems and inconcistancies.

Rule of thumb: stay away from anything with a "remaster" blurp on it.

@Ripper_TV: On PC it was given for free to anyone who already owned it, which is where the problems are. They didn't have to pay for it, if this were on consoles and people paid $60 there'd be a much bigger outcry

Let's be honest, the console remasters are the PC version from 2008 or whenever it came out.

I've only ever bought one remaster. Last of us. I have a rule that I don't rebuy games or movies (dvd to bluray)

@carving_a_giant: I think the console remasters of 1 and 2 are the PC remasters of 1 and 2. Infinite on the console IS the original PC version; 2K basically said as much.

I think these are just a small, low budget project that 2K put enough marketing into for us to think it'd be something more robust.

These remasters highlight how much they are fucking over console gamers. There is little to no change on the pc version of the games so they give it to us for free as they know no one will buy these updates because they are almost none existant. Yet they happily charge console gamers for these while also not offering BC for Xbox gamers.

The definition of remaster has changed the past year, the lack of effort is staggaring and it will continue.

This is the remaster generation and the worst gen i have experienced in my gaming life.

Well maybe you should make it your responsibility to test all versions of the game before you write your damn reviews. Sites like this are the reason Batman Arkham Knight fucked PC gamers then you report like "the game is perfect and works fine! Go buy it!" Then the next day "pc versions fucked not our fault, we didnt know".

Played about an hour of it on PC yesterday.

I also noticed a bit better textures and lighting. Perhaps that is the biggest dissapointment, not the mouse/keyboard controls, not all the bugs left intact... But the fact that they chose to rerelease this, but only making the game look 0.000001% better and calling it a day.

It's lazy, it's half assed. And if 2K had respect for their Bioshock franchise they wouldn't have done it like this.

These problems were expected, unfortunately. The remasters and the DLCs are the biggest scams in this industry for me. This PS4 generation had the worst first half of releases compared to every past generation. Just think about it... The Wii-U is a joke, but nintendo kickstarted this generation. The only great game released since 2012 is Witcher 3. Bloodborne, Uncharted 4, MGSV, etc... All good games, but the only one really great was Witcher 3. Sony and Microsoft announcing big releases in the E3 which will only be released 1 some even 2 years later. Not the whole 4k upscale bullshit. It is clear how flawed this generation is, the DLC and the remasters are just a bonus. We were happy and we did not know, lol The last generation was not that great either, still, it was much better than the shit we have now.

And I rest my case about how remastered games are really the industry's biggest scam. It's absurd how many games get the remastered treatment, especially those that nobody even asked for, and people still flock out to get them even though they probably already own the original. A lot aren't even 10 years old, and some, like Last of Us and the PS3 to PS4 version of FF10, weren't even 3 years old.

@rglgathrawn:

Remaking games from the 6th gen and below makes total sense but anything from the 7th gen is definitely not right. For example ffx and xii are justified remasters but remaking any of the xiii games would be an obvious cash grab. Devs only do it because its a cheap way to get cash but somehow still manage to f*ck it up. Case in point, the bioshock collection.

Well, the people on Steam who owned the originals don't have to pay for the updates, which is great, and I know the PS4 and XBOX One get the PC version of Infinite, but for console owners, it's a good bump up. Hope the crashed get fixed.

It's crashed twice for me so far, and the physics seem a little off, but overall I like it, the textures, after comparing, do look a fair bit better, and the water looks great, it's pretty good, but if they don't fix the crashing soon, I'll be a little pissed, but at least it was free.

I got it for free by owning the games already so I'm not complaining much but I really noticed that mouse acceleration. How many games have to be released with that crap and everyone hates it before developers realize it should be OPTIONAL. People shouldn't have to jump through hoops to turn it off or have to dive into INI files or other methods to adjust the FOV.

@catsimboy: The mouse acceleration issues are the only thing I've seen so far that appear to be legitimate complaint, and I know that can be a huge issue. Most the time though, I see people complaint that the visual upgrades aren't enough even though it's free and want to review it poorly.

@Ferric24: Being mad and complaining that something is broken aren't the same things. Nobody needs to be mad (this is a video game, be an adult) but if you're having problems, bringing them up online can bring them to the attention of people who might know how to fix your problem. And it might warn anybody else who wants to buy these remasters of possible issues.

@Ferric24: People ought to be mad. Its a remaster that's supposed to fix all the issues ,improve the visuals and add new content. The original Bioshock was a great game but it had loads of issues like dated visuals, 15 fps physics and broken audio. Folks were expecting all these issues to be fixed.

PS4 version also has some issues, it'll freeze often if you let the game pause for a few minutes or go to dashboard and back to the game (bioshock 1, didn't played 2 or infinite yet)

It's pretty rough. I played through BioShock 1 just a couple years ago, and found the visuals hadn't aged very well. The remaster does look better. The graphical improvements aren't night and day or anything, but it's enough to make it look like I remember from 2007.

The real problems are on the technical side. Sounds are off (nitro splicers are totally silent for me, audio logs sometimes stutter, some voice lines are sound strangely distant when they aren't), settings reset themselves after you relaunch the game, decals (like blood splatters) flicker when you move. None of these are all the time things for me (except those mute nitro splicers), but they're all noticeable.

If you played BioShock on the PS3 or 360, then this remaster will be a nice upgrade, because you've got further to go from your original version. But on the PC ... it's just kind of disappointing. I got these remasters for free, so that's great, but for $20? I think I'd pass unless I'd never played BioShock.

If the technical stuff gets patched up, these remasters will be fine (if not exactly amazing); until then, they're nice freebies you probably wont play all the way through.

@Mogan: Sounds are way off indeed, and should have received the remaster treatment instead of just visuals.

When I fired the Thompson SMG for the first time I knew it: nothing was changed. The bug where the thompson SMG still barely makes any noise (it's firing sound is more silent than the sound of people being hit) is still intact xD

@R4gn4r0k: It's not a complete fix, but I went into the bioshock.ini file (users/you/appdata/roaming/bioshockHD/bioshock) and set the "SpeakerMode=" line from stereo to SM_7_1, since I've got 7.1 headphones, and that's fixed a lot of the noise volume/not playing issues I had.

Oh, and after I made that change, I set the ini to read only, so the game cant change it back. : \
