BioShock Hands-On

We take the PlayStation 3 version of 2K's acclaimed shooter for a test drive.

BioShock made some big waves when it was released for the Xbox 360 last year. The unique game wrapped a rich story with first-person shooter mechanics in a stunning art style that made for one of the most engrossing experiences seen on consoles in a long while. Thankfully, PlayStation 3 owners will get a chance to see what all the fuss is about with the upcoming conversion of the game for Sony's console. We've seen demos of the game in the past few months but only just had the chance to try the game ourselves courtesy of a recent visit from 2K.

2K has roped in a cavalcade of development teams to handle the conversion of the game for the PlayStation 3. 2K Marin, 2K Boston, 2K Australia, and Digital Extremes are tag teaming the project, which aims to come up with a faithful conversion of the original game. The teams are also including a few bells and whistles in the form of content, as well as visual tweaks. Fans of the original game will be familiar with the single-player Story mode, which follows the trials and tribulations of plane crash survivor who stumbles onto a mysterious underwater utopia called Rapture.

The PlayStation 3 game, as we've noted before, is on the right track to capture the look and feel of the Xbox 360 game. The visuals are comparable, although there are some subtle differences in color and texture. The controls map intuitively to the PlayStation 3 controller and feel a bit better. The PS3's D pad seems like a much better fit for the hacking minigame. The controller's rumble support also had a nice feel to it. Although the experience is pretty much the same in the single-player mode, we noticed subtle tweaks, such as manual cycling of the load screen stills. The game also incorporates all the downloadable content that's been available on the Xbox 360. In addition, the game features trophy support, some of which are the same achievements seen in the Xbox 360 game, while others are different.

Outside of the proper single-player experience, we had a chance to try the Survivor mode, which offers a greater level of challenge that forces you to be smarter about how you play the game. Enemy behavior has been tweaked, and the damage you cause has been modified, so you won't be sailing through the mode even if you're familiar with the original game. We also got a look at the other big addition to the game, the puzzle rooms, which are a very slick brain-busting addition to the main game. 2K reps noted that the rooms will vary in scope and size, which will affect how long it takes you to play through them. While some, such as the Ferris wheel, we've seen before and can be done in short order, others will require more work.

BioShock remains a must-play game for this generation, so if you haven't checked it out yet, the PlayStation 3 version of the game is one more chance for you to give it a try. The game is coming together really well. The faithful conversion of the main game is looking good and might even be sharper in places. The additional content, challenge rooms, modes, and trophies are nice extras to have, although we obviously would have liked to see more. BioShock for the PlayStation 3 is slated to ship this October, so look for more soon.

Before I forget, my Trans AM WS6 Convertible is way better than any crappy Mustang:) Just messing with the ford

I think that the reason that so many people are such die hard fanboys is because they either can't afford the second system, or their parents won't buy it for them, so they have to act all tuff, as if they didn't want it to begin with.LOL They'll get over it, once they get out of the fifth grade. :)

I am just glad to have A console, cause we all know video games aren't cheap to play! Great Game though.

This game needs online coop.. System shock 2 was a blast to play with a buddy or 2 or 3... This game would too

Avatar image for jean_borrero

Whining about consoles is getting old and starting to sound immature and spiteful. Lets all just be glad we have the right to choose between two great consoles. Me... I have both of them and other than unique titles and feel of the controller the systems are just about the same.

I bought the PC version. It was pretty meh.

Avatar image for Salt_The_Fries

Would you kindly stop crapping over each other's consoles?

Avatar image for Techiemaster

ya know i find it funny, that Xbox owners like TehUndeadHorror dont know how to spell. And your just pissed that you dont have MSG4. but hey buddy, we've got more game then that. Like Resistance which i put better then Halo because Halo is just the same game over and over and over again. Now stop complaining that you have the worse console, and go learn to spell.

i don't see why so many people feel the need to bash other consoles. bioshock is no longer an exclusive title. so what? who cares? both systems are great in their own respects with their own franchises. i happen to own both AND a wii and even if i play one more than the other it doesn't mean that the other 'sucks'.

Avatar image for SyrusKahn

i wish all fanboys would hang themselves... it's a game and it's meant to be played by you. SO JUST FRICKIN PLAY THE DAMN GAME!!!

Avatar image for thealternativex

"wii sucks. Ps3 rules. xbox 360 thought they were going to have bioshock exculsivly for them well things change. Ha Ha Ha Ha." Oh ya mean like how Sony thought it was going to have GTA, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, oh yeah and FINAL FANTASY 13.. Good comment though, bro. Really made 360 users feel dumb...

Avatar image for TehUndeadHorror

"ps3 is gay wat do use have but MGS4 we have gow1 gow2 left 4 dead and muce more" pfft we have GOW1, 2, and 3. Our GOW beats your GOW.

Avatar image for PEELEDbanana

Emanmax, Dude, the Wii sucks. Period. The only reason ppl are still buying it is because they think Cooking Mama is a better game than Gears of War or Resistance. Eventually, the Wii is going to fall, and it will be a good day for the rest of us gamers.

Avatar image for jacklin345

Who cares if it was gonna be exclusive? If its a great game I would care less for it to be exclusive and instead wish to see that more people play it, via making it accessible on more consoles. @ bluntguys

ps3 is gay wat do use have but MGS4 we have gow1 gow2 left 4 dead and muce more

Avatar image for gearsman-1

the 360 has more bottons on the contolle pad so the ps3 will have like 2 controlls on the 1 botten

Avatar image for bluntguys

wow really cool xbox 360 thinking you were going to put bioshock only on your system. ha glad i bought a Ps3.

Avatar image for gearsman-1

how cruse 360 had this 2 years ago ps3 is so behind 360 rocks ps3 cant even keep up with the new games

Avatar image for fzaynoun

@emanmax Why you wii users raise the same subject over and over, "Wii capable ...", no one said it isn't capable in the first place !

Avatar image for shanzor

@2005wrxsti Nothing quite says "I should have bought a console" when your price tag for your upgraded PC is $3000

Avatar image for shanzor

@lesexywarden Ummmm, nothing is proven to be better. They said the images are comparable. Usually ports end up muddled on the PS3 though. And it said that it contains all of the dlc that was on the 360. Nothing extra. The only extra things are the two extra modes which kind of seem like they were tacked on as a way of 2k saying "sorry it came to the 360 first" GS in itself isn't biased. The reviewers may be but it's not really noticeable

Avatar image for shanzor

@briansevenfive Ok, it just seemed like you were trying to praise the PS3 over the 360 and I was just fighting back. They're both great systems so people should get both but not everyone can afford that unfortunately. Oh, and you said Halo 3 was a let down = a disappointment

Avatar image for emanmax

what no wii version the wii is capable of that kind of graphics look at metroid prime 3 or resident evil 4 or the conduit. plus it would be awsome with motion controls

Avatar image for bloo_herriman92

ive played the 360 one and it was fun (wasnt scary for me since ive seen almost alot of scary things in the book) but this actually looks better, theres only one way to no now

Avatar image for arikkot

i have ADD

Avatar image for Aven9186

Simple minded fools, all any of you ask is that, "Is the graphics better." I mean really ask yourself is graphics the only thing that make a game great? What about gameplay? story? or even the replay value? I personally don't like Bioshock, I think it plays like crap. and besides it's just a FPS they are all the same. everybody has ADD.

Avatar image for bcviper

cool the 36o version was great and some added features will make it better on ps3. the dpad on the 36o does blow...

Avatar image for mastiffchild

I've been looking forward to this for what seems like an age. I bought it for Xbox360 but the next day I had enough when it broke down for the seventh time in six months so never got to play it. Glad that it doesn't look like I'll have lost out on anything in the long run! As for console wars-I don't see the point. If you get on with your 360 then fair enough, they just kept beaking for me but when it worked I loved it. I'd still have got the PS3 for MGS and LBP anyway and I can get pretty much anything for 360 that I want to play on PC. I also can't see there being an appreciable difference between the PS and Xbox versions of Bioshock tbh. Would it be in anyone's interest for them to mess about unduly with a classic?

Avatar image for iesexywarden

At sykalob.... Actually most people blaimed GS for being to 360 biased. -Umm actually Bioshock on PS3 IS PROVEN TO BE BETTER..With sharper images, more dlc and unlockables... umm actually 2K said it themselves that the ps3 version is better. -Nothing to be ashamed of, i mean 360 had this game way before ps3, it happens....

Avatar image for DoubleAxe

nice... but I want to see more info on Bioshock 2

Avatar image for acountddd

hmmm sounding like a bit of a fanboy yourself there sykalob...

Avatar image for danleeah

Stop trying to downplay this MR Kralc.

Avatar image for sykalob

If there are a hardcore faithful Fanboys's GAMESPOT..they are afraid to say that the graphics &colors &reflection of the XBOX version still better ..and the game is faster..and they try to keep lieing by saying the D-pad crap and the mini game crap .i am really starting to hate those fanboys with small mind ...they are the real reason behind Fanboism propaganda

Erm...sorry to burst bubbles but this game is not that great. Its very repetitive...the puzzles aka hacking get extremely tiresome (but its a necessity in order to get upgrades etc) and boring VERY quickly. Also the variety of enemies are limited. Ok so you have many different ways of dispatching these foes but the replay value is nil. For me it doesn't come close to Halo 3 or COD4. With the limted amount of good FPS available on PS3 it will certainly work in its favour.

Avatar image for SalarianChemist

Xbox 360 and PC versions were identical graphically. The Playstation 3 version doesn't look quite as good, and it is being released over a year later, but that is still better than never.

Avatar image for aliko

Yeah, it was a good Bio... and really quite scary...

Avatar image for football_legend

Looks really good

Avatar image for 2005wrxsti

Yeah..stop arguing about consoles, that's dumb. PC FTW! Can't believe you console fanboys are still arguing about it. Gaming systems are limited by one thing and one thing only...the intelligence of their users. This is why PC reigns supreme, downloadable content, overclocking, cooling mods, hacks, tweaks, portable cup and bong holders, hell I can even cook an egg on my cpu heatpipes if I wanna. Nothin' says diversity and surperiority like playing a game and makin' a breakfast burrito at the same time. PWNAGE!

Avatar image for spanky333

Will this game be offered at a lower price because of it's age?

Avatar image for smith447

whatever, ill buy it.

Avatar image for Salt_The_Fries

Although I own Xbox 360 and I actually played and finished BioShock first on PC, I think it'll be a must-have for all PS3 users, and I'm glad that they will have extra content that hopefully will comfort such big interval between X360 / PC and PS3 versions. Overall, it was a game of the year 2007 for me, along with The Witcher. Both were so much beyond cliched fast-food junk gaming world that became a staple nowadays.

Avatar image for rgarrow923

i played bioshock twice when it first came out and I don't really remember any puzzles. Did I just forgot or are these puzzle rooms compltly new... seems kinda odd to make a puzzle room for a game that has no puzzles

Avatar image for briansevenfive

@ Shanzor & Ra-Devil I am not trying to start the battle up again over which console is better, i own both so i rlly dont care and for halo im a huge halo fan but about a month into owning halo the online network would mess up and that lasted for about 2 weeks then i stoped playing and iunno where u get this from i never said Halo 3 was a disapointment i loved halo 3 great story mode online was lots of fun until me and my friends had problems with the bungie online network and also 4 controllers the ps3 has 8 u can use but rlly i dont wanna get into all the details on these consoles becuz in my books theres no winners they both have there pros and there cons like for 360 ive pre-ordered GOW2 and Fable 2 GOW is the best game out there and happens to be on the 360 i never get bored of it but saying the ps3 has nothing coming out is a joke LBP, Socom Confrontations Resistence 2 and more in the future killzone 2 and God of War 3 there is no winner so the only solution is to buy the 360 and ps3

Avatar image for DeanoFantasy

Fantastic stuff! it is a true "must have" if you have never played the game before! I will be getting it along with LBP, Fallout 3, Motorstorm 2, FIFA 09 etc.

Avatar image for Intrakitt

Bioshock never froze for me on the 360...ever.

Avatar image for hazelnutman

I am so psyched for this game :D

Avatar image for shadystxxx

Bioshock is one of the best games i have played this generation on all platform's, it rate's along side MGS4 and gears of war as my fav next gen games. It's great more people get to play this amazing game but i won't be buying it again not enough new content for a second purchase, if they had of added some new level's to the main game i might of but with so many good game's coming this fall on PS3,360 and PC(I have a wii also but nothing has taken my fancy for 08,maybe mad world) i will give bioshock ps3 a miss. If i only owned a PS3 this would be a must buy, PS3 owner's should definitly check it out.

Avatar image for Loucetios

Xeno-Zero also the freezing problems the 360 and PC versions had are gone in the Ps3 version so thats also a plus :D
