BioShock 2 multiplayer goes to Digital Extremes

2K Games tasks studio behind PS3 port of original underwater shooter with group-oriented prequel mode set during "the fall of Rapture."

Prior to BioShock 2's official reveal in October, speculation appeared to indicate that the 2K Games-published game would be a prequel to the first, detailing the fall of the idyllic underwater city of Rapture. However, as explained in GameSpot's first look at the first-person shooter, BioShock 2 is very much a sequel to the events in the first game, taking place 10 years after the conclusion of Jack's escapades with Andrew Ryan and Frank Fontaine and featuring big sisters.

A big sister in the wild.
A big sister in the wild.

Today, the source of that early speculation appears to have come to light. 2K Games has announced that BioShock 2 will indeed contain a multiplayer component, one that will be set "during the fall of Rapture." Digital Extremes, the studio behind 2008's long-in-the-making Dark Sector as well as the PlayStation 3 edition of BioShock, has been tasked with creating the BioShock 2 multiplayer component.

BioShock 2's multiplayer will tell a story of its own, positioning players in the role of a plasmid test subject for Sinclair Solutions, "a premier provider of plasmids and tonics" that eventually turned the underwater city's denizens insane. 2K Games notes that the multiplayer component will continue to flesh out BioShock's backstory, providing a look at the corruption that led to Rapture's demise, as well as revisiting a number of locales from the first game.

2K Games didn't delve into specific game modes for the multiplayer component, and it didn't indicate whether it would focus on cooperative or competitive play. However, the publisher did note that an experience-point system will be at work, wherein players will be able to upgrade and unlock new weapons, plasmids, and tonics as they advance. 2K Games also promises that these abilities can be used to form "hundreds of different combinations."

BioShock 2 is expected to arrive for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

mmmm... a multiplayer... that sounds awsome! I hope Bioshock 2 will have a 4-player local multiplayer & co-op, so i can play with my buddies..... that would be helpful.

The single-player mode is what's so compelling - I don't see much value being added by adding mp.

Having multiplayer modes in a game is good and is selling more, but i think puting multiplayer mode in bioshock might ruin the game. Hope not.

So they botched the single player for the sequel so badly that they felt the need to tack on a multiplayer mode? Some games are built around MP (Halo, GOW, COD, etc...). Most of the others toss it on just to try and hide the weak SP experience. It doesn't ever work and it won't work here.

Don't play much co-op, eh, d3emondav3? R2 did something similar to this, as did other titles and its not a bad idea, at all. I'm with remixbaby44, its a nice change to your CTF/DM/TDM games that you always see and are synonymous with multiplayer.

Well, Dark Sector may have bombed, but the multiplayer was actually kind of fun. So I have high hopes for Bioshock's multiplayer. But what the hell are they talking about with the "it's going to tell a backstory"? Multiplayer is you log on and kill things- not do quests and get to the next objective.

@PitchBlack999 Unlike other developers, 2K Marin thought of that as well, that's why they gave the job to others, so that the main single-player campaign's development will not be at halt, and at best, still be at focus for them. And as the article said, it is going to be a totally different experience from the single-player campaign. It's going to be more like a prequel than a sequel. It's not like your average Bioshock slapped with co-op multiplayer all of a sudden. That would suck I think.

I am looking forward to this game, but at the same time it frightens me. Meaning, I loved the first game so much, I consider it to be one of the best games I have ever played, and I still enjoy playing it, so I hope that the sequel builds on that and does not George Lucus me...

@poorisaac Shaq huge? That's huge indeed. That guy has the width and the height, as well as the weight. Yao Ming huge isn't enough to describe how huge the reputation Bioshock has.

You realize Digital Extremes is the studio that developed Dark Sector (which is a horrible game, perhaps the worst 360/PS3 game ive ever played), multiplayer is gonna blow... HARDCORE... hopefully they deliver on CAMPAIGN! this news has seriously dropped my interest A LOT!

@SimonLaunder: People complain about trivialities to avoid their fears and problems of the moment. They also do it because they are huge douches. ;)

i didn't like Dark Sector's multiplayer that much, it was too laggy and inconsistent....but FPS's tend to make for better multiplayer experiences anyway.

lol, why do people always complain. They have sent the multiplayer component to another developer so it wont affect the single player, the 2k team will still be working on it just as hard. Tookie is right, it adds more replayablility.

Why the hell do all the game devs think they compulsorily need multiplayer to make a game successful? Focus on the single player more....thatl help in a great way..the main focus over the storyline of the is destroyed sometimes because of this...because of focusing more on Multiplayer...Co-op is fun though...but IMO multiplayer doesnt have to be in every game

I've seen a couple people around the tubes getting really mad over multiplayer. The best thing I saw was that someone thought the single player would suck because they were spending time on multiplayer. Well, I guess they didn't read this article (or any of the others on it). Eh, oh well. I'm glad it's going to be a prequel segment, and hopefully it'll manage the co-op thing well or also let you play it solo. Still pretty hopeful about this one.

@bethodman Oh F@ck no I hope they don't do that it would ruin the whole Andrew Ryan death from the first one and it would be just stupid. It would feel to much like recycling old villains because they ran out of ideas. It would be just far too lazy of them to do that. Would people stop saying Andrew Ryan is alive. There is nothing to prove he is alive we all saw him die and it would be just plain stupid if they had him still alive after that.

I got bored of playing Bioshock within 3 hours. Rapture isn't a city its an underwater aquarium. Maybe I wasn't playing this right but all that I ended up doing was running around listening to crappy tapes and collecting ammo taking out crack heads. I would then run into a big daddy, run out of ammo and get killed a few times before killing it and then finish off by killing a small child and repeating the whole thing all over in a different room. The story was weak, the characters where shallow and tbh other than being a pretty game at the time I thought it sucked. Compared SS2 this game was weak.

@scotthulluk, they did the smartest thing by putting it on both consoles!I'm sure it plays just as good on the 360 vs the PS3 and vice versa.

What a revolutionary idea!!!! (no sarcasm) More story line and a reason to actually play multiplayer cuz I for one am not a fan of just running around and killing things all day, no offense meant for the fps fans out there either though. Just giving my 2 cents.

It's a good approach. Let one team put their full attention on the single-player, let the other put theirs on the multi-player.
