Bill Murray Returns to Ghostbusters

Veteran comedy star confirmed for a role in the upcoming reboot.

Ghostbusters star Bill Murray is to appear in Bridesmaids director Paul Feig's upcoming reboot, which is currently in production and due for release next summer. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed the news, after the actor was seen arriving in Boston, where the film is shooting.

Murray had previously resisted any involvement with a remake or sequel to the 1984 comedy classic. In 2012, he explained during a TV interview with David Letterman that his disappointment with 1989's Ghostbusters 2, combined with the unimpressive script he had read for a potential third part, meant that he was reluctant to return to the franchise.

"They just don't have a really good script," he told Letterman at the time. "It's hard to make a sequel."

However, the new direction for the film, which will showcase an entirely female ghostbusting team, has clearly met with the star's approval. Murray's role is unconfirmed, and while it is unlikely to be much more than a cameo, he will be the second original cast member to sign up to the movie. In July, Dan Aykroyd revealed that he had been on-set, filming scenes with lead actress Kristen Wiig.

Ghostbusters stars Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hensworth, and hits cinemas on July 16, 2016.
