Biggest PS5 Announcements From The PlayStation 5 Showcase Event

The PlayStation 5 event finally confirmed the console's release date and price, while also showcasing many exciting new games.

Sony recently hosted a PS5 showcase event which offered a good look at what consumers can expect from the upcoming next-generation console. The event primarily focused on PS5 games coming at launch "and beyond," as well as finally confirming PS5's price and release date. Afterwards, we also found out that PS5 preorders would be going live the next day. As it turns out, preorders ended up going live early and without prior notice at nearly every major retailer. However, don't worry if you didn't get yours, as more orders should be available prior to launch--keep an eye on our PS5 preorder guide for more.

The PS5 showcase had a ton of new information regarding PS5 and its upcoming games. Read on for details to rewatch the event (complete with our pre- and post-show). You can also find our recap of the biggest news, including the latest on Sony's first- and third-party PS5 games.

How To Rewatch The PS5 Showcase Event

Sony broadcasted the PS5 event live on its Twitch and YouTube pages, as well as the official PlayStation website. You can rewatch the entire event here on GameSpot, complete with a pre- and post-show to break down everything we see. Just check out the embed above or head to our YouTube page.

Final Fantasy XVI

Square Enix used Sony's PS5 showcase to debut a trailer for Final Fantasy XVI--the latest in the long-running RPG franchise--and it'll be a PlayStation console exclusive. This is different than XV, which also came to Xbox One. Early footage of the game has it channeling early entries in the franchise with a more traditional fantastical setting and political intrigue. No release date for Final Fantasy XVI was shared, and the footage shown was running on PC. There is some speculation it could be connected to earlier games in the series.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

As to be expected, we got another glimpse at Insomniac's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which gave a more in-depth glimpse at gameplay. The early gameplay showed more Miles Morales deal with some threats occurring in his home neighborhood of Harlem. Spider-Man: Miles Morales will cost $50, but you can get a deluxe edition that includes a remastered version of Marvel's Spider-Man for $70. It's confirmed to be a PS5 launch game set to release alongside the console on November 12. There will also be a PS4 version. Those who buy this version will get upgraded to the PS5 version for free when they play it on the new system.

Hogwarts Legacy

During the showcase, Avalanche Studios' long-rumored Harry Potter universe game was finally revealed. Titled Hogwarts Legacy, the upcoming game is set during the 1800s and is an open-world RPG where your actions will shape the wizarding world of Harry Potter. You can learn and customize spells, team up with iconic characters, and tame fantastical beasts. The game is scheduled to release sometime in 2021.

Demon's Souls Remake

After the exciting reveal of the Demon's Souls remake a couple of months back, we finally got to see gameplay footage of From Software's action-RPG in action during the Sony's latest PS5 showcase. What was shown was mostly the introductory areas of the classic FromSoftware action-RPG rendered in completely new detail. This included a look at a giant boss, as well as the nearly instant transition between bonfires due to the PS5's SSD. Naturally, it also includes footage of the player-character getting killed by a boss. Like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the Demon's Souls remake is confirmed to be a PS5 launch game set to release on November 12.

God Of War Sequel

At the end of the presentation, Sony unveiled the next God of War game, which briefly teased Ragnarok is coming. Developed again by Sony Santa Monica Studios, the new game's confirmation appropriately coincides with the earlier tease from series director Cory Barlog on Twitter. Very little else is known on this game.

Price And Release Date

During the event, Sony finally confirmed PS5's price and release date. The standard version is coming November 12 and will cost $499; alternatively, the all-digital version will cost $399. For preorder information, jump to our PS5 preorder explainer detailing how to secure yourself Sony's latest next-gen console. If you didn't get the console the first time preorders opened up, you should still have at least a few more chances before release day. Sony also says there will be more opportunities to buy it before the end of the year.

PlayStation Plus Collection

It seems Sony's approach to backward compatibility in the PS5 will come in the form of PlayStation Plus Collection. The added perk to existing PS Plus subscription will provide PS5 players access to a library of PS4's best games, including God of War, Days Gone, Persona 5, Monster Hunter World, and more.

Here's Everything Else

Sony showed off many other new games, including Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition, and more. Check out the stories below for all the details.

I’ll definitely be buying the all-digital version. I think I might have bought 5 games on disc during the PS4 timeline.

Heh, first time I see a Harry Potter game looking THAT good. Anyhow I think the first impressions I got from new FF16, sucked. There's no hype, no real cinematic like they use to have. But I think this game is most likely huge AF. Could be the best one yet, who knows.

The price on the console however is cheaper than I expected, while having the choice of choosing a cheaper version without the disc for 100euros less is a great deal for those that does not like discs. I will without a doubt buy the disc version.

I also love that they expand the PS+, so the HIT games comes free to play on the ps5, I played most of them but I still have like 3 left in that list to buy and now I no longer have to.

Can ps5 do this:

Pc and Xbox and cloud can run at the same time on one account, opening up all access to games under one account, (in theory you could play Lan, on the cloud, on pc and console under one payee account with other family members, internet access will be required tho, but no more sharing TV screens) but the console or pc must have priority access for the main account or the 3rd party accounts under the billing account cannot access those games freely til the payee logs in, but the console should be fine as long as the main accounts logged in from time and again. You can play offline upwards of 1 month, but if multiple hard resets will mean the main account will need to access the the internet for offline play. Hell you can use your phone mobile data(if you have no internet) to access the main account and play offline entirely, but no updates will be available.

Pc and Xbox and Mobile win, they can play with other family members.

Sadly the losers apple and sony, due to their closed nature environment.

There going to be even more games coming out only in digital this gen.

You should save yourself $100 now and just get the digital version. Also there's digital sales all the time, don't listen to the naysayers.

I own like 60 digital PS4 games and not one of them I paid more then $20. I waited till they got older and on sale never had a problem finding them for $20 or or less.

@justthetip: Many years, I feel.

Hell, this generation had more games come out physically that would have only come out digital last gen. I expect the trend to continue. I honestly wonder why people cheer for all-digital, the most anti-consumer of all things, that even HOLLYWOOD won't pull the trigger on. GameStop isn't bad enough for me to cheer the destruction of consumer rights in gaming.

That was one of sonys worst shows I’ve seen. IT WAS CRAP. Worse than there last one for sure. Xbox’s July show was better. More games and bigger variety.

Spidey was the only game that interested me and that looked like it could run on ps4.

I was more let down than I thought I was going to be and I’m more of an Xbox fan. Go figure.

No, I was expecting some big sony surprise reveals, some new exclusives.

And the ps plus collection? When the video was running I thought OMG how cheesy and super underwhelming is this? Half of the games are already on Xbox Gamepass. LMAO.

The ps plus collection is garbage compared to Gamepass.

Xbox have all the bases covered right now. All they need to do is bring us those new titles from the new Xbox Studios and the come back will be complete.

sony have dropped the ball.

@fedor: Dude, that's the stupidest thing ever.

Hell, PC reminds of of what the all-digital future will be like on consoles if the publishers get their way. Steam is a piss-hole, with no customer support and no guarantee that what you buy will even run. If it wasn't for GoG, the whole platform would be useless for gaming simply because of Steam's near-monopoly level control of the platform otherwise.

Cheating in online is also rampant, as @cage_92 points out.

@justthetip is also right. There aren't that many truly great games on the PC. CD Projekt Red is a consistent performer on PC, but there's very little in terms of rock-solid output besides them. Valve doesn't make games at all anymore, Blizzard is stuck on services and everyone else either does shovelware or console ports.

I love my PC (especially for emulation and GoG), but it will always be seen by most outside of a tiny niche as a work machine, not a games machine. Seriously, people are skittish about $500 consoles, you think those people are going to buy $500 graphics cards?

@fedor: Wins what? Not market share. Not entry price. Not game stability. Not in amount of Quality AAA games.

PC has the graphics and framerate. That’s it. Neither of those things is so stunning that it renders consoles useless. Consoles still produce fantastic graphics. So what if I get a little extra reflection in the water, or a few more pores in a person’s skin, on PC?

As long as consoles are being made, I and the vast majority of people, will always take one over a PC.

@xenomorphalien: Fantastic? Sony loves people like you that they can entertain with basically nothing. It was a terrible show and the only good confirm news been 400 & 500 for PS5 and not 600, 550 for a PS5 console.

@doomsdayhell01: What do you mean nothing? I saw gameplay for Demon's Souls, Miles Morales, Harry Potter, FFXVI, Deathloop, and God of War Ragnarok is coming next year. They have a PS Collection which I can play all the PS4 games I missed since I only played a couple. Not to mention Ratchet and Clank and Horizon 2 next year as well. This was the one showing this year that had a good amount of gameplay. Sony is gonna have a great first year whereas MS is gonna support the Xbox One for at least 2 years. It's a no brainer for me really, get a PS5 first for the games and exclusives and use the Xbox One for the continued support and get a Series S when it stops.

I'm actually very dissapointed in both Xbox & SOny boring consoles with mimum innovation..

~Who remembers how blown away we all were when we say the Xbox360/CallOfDuty2 demo and how the HD was in your face uber awesome...

~Even the controllers are identical.

Minimum backwards compatability??

My god the fanboys will pretend it's no big deal i bet...

@sippio: Lol that generation was barely an improvement and the xbox360 I would not know because it was in transit because of the RROD for the first 6 months after release to get replaced 3 times. Have not had that feeling you describe since I was playing on super nintendo and the playstation came out. Really has not been a big leap since then just a steady slow improvement in consoles since.

And controllers only identical if you buying an xbox. New ps5 controllers might be cool but will depend on whether game makers decide to use the technology to its potential. But no not a huge innovation we really have not had any big change to controllers since thumbsticks and wireless.

I won’t be buying an XboxSeX and I’m only interested in one single exclusive for the PS5, which is an FPS game, and there’s no way in hell I’m playing that on a console.

Looks like I’m definitely going to be building that $2500 gaming PC this year

@jsprunk:

Problem with PC gaming though is all the hackers/cheaters for this reason alone since BF1, BF5, Apex Legends, COD I didn't have a choice but to buy a console to play those games and others.

Plus there are just some games that have a bigger pool of people playing them a lot longer.

As the sun was just rising from the horizon of the frozen Alaskan tundra, his DS5 controller started vibrating in it’s holster. The great explorer philanthropist reverend Dr. Mark Cerny, PhD pulled it out and turned on the lightbar to locate his Experia phone with the PSN messenger app installed on it.

12 new messages…”dammit Knack” he said to his trusty Arabian Brown horse, “only hours left and I’ve slept in. Come on boy,” and with that he threw a leg over his trusty friend and together they galloped South...

As he approached the Canadian border, he heard a low growl from the woods to his left. Knack reared up a bit quickly hearing it too. “Easy, boy, easy now.” The great explorer philanthropist reverend Dr. Mark Cerny, PhD jumped down off his trusty steed to investigate.

It was as he expected. An endangered white Spirit Bear had its front paw caught in a poachers trap; a terrible clamp marked with a green circle with a white X in it. “If it’s not discarded controller batteries leaking alkaline fluid, it’s these damn traps.”

Wrenching the poor animal free, he set back upon his course and spurred Knack towards their destination. “No time to waste old friend! The people are waiting…”

The wildfires of the Pacific Northwest were still raging but nothing could stop the great explorer philanthropist reverend Dr. Mark Cerny, PhD. and his trusty horse Knack from reaching their goal. As they continued South through the burning forests, they came upon a terrible sight...a mountain lion and her cubs were trapped under a fallen tree.

The tree was too large to move, but without hesitation, the great explorer philanthropist reverend Dr. Mark Cerny, PhD. pulled out his DS5 controller and used the revolutionary haptic feedback feature to vibrate the tree out of the way, rescuing the poor family from certain death.

“There, there my forest friends, be free now!” And with that, he threw a leg over Knack and spurred him Southward towards the future...

As he approached his secret fortress HQ on his trusty Arabian Brown horse, Knack, the great explorer philanthropist reverend Dr. Mark Cerny, PhD saw flashes of green from around a nearby hedge...an ambush!

A familiar green circle with a white X label branded his enemies shoulders, and he knew right away this was a trap. Cerny unsheathed his new DS5 white and black controller and took aim at the terrorist and let it fly. The terrorist was blinded by the DS5’s lightbar before it struck him on the temple, knocking him to the ground. The controller continued it’s boomerang-like arc back to the hand of our hero, who swiftly dispatched the second terrorist with a whip from his controller charge cable.

Cerny towered over the would be assailants. “Take these words back to your leader, The Spencer: Neither Knack nor I will cease in our quest to bring peace and joy to the world.” And with that our heroes entered the secret HQ to deliver a message to the world...

I don't know why people are going crazy for release date & pricing info... Not only would sony stay in the same ball park as MS, they will probably price the same or a few bucks lower. We've seen it with every console generation.

Next-gen Consoles will never be more than $500... The manufacturers know any more than $500, you'll start seeing a dip in the people that can afford to waste the money on a video game console (toy)

Consoles are still around, because they are cheaper alternatives to PCs... Anymore than $500 for a console, your better off building a budget PC, and more future proof.

Collector edition's of consoles (like the 20th anniversary ps4) are the only exceptions to the $500 rule, anything more, buy/build a budget pc

Price The digital ps5 version at $349.99 and the disc version at $449.99 and you would see how great that pricing strategy is Sony. It would be just as aggressive as Xbox.
