Big Xbox One Update Out Now, Here's What It Adds

What's expected to be the final big Xbox One update of the year is rolling out now.

The new Xbox One Fall dashboard update has been available, in some form at least, for the past few months. Now, Microsoft has concluded the pre-release testing phase and is ready to roll it out worldwide, beginning today.

The focus of the Fall update is personalization. One of the biggest new things you will notice is that the Home screen is changed significantly with the introduction of content "blocks." Anyone who has used the Xbox One dashboard knows well that it can be difficult at times to find what you're looking for. With the blocks, you can select what content--games or apps--show up where you want them to.

No Caption Provided

Additionally, things like friend activities, leaderboards, Looking For Group messages, and more now show up at the top of the revamped Home screen. Another new feature in this update is the option to choose between dark, light, and high-contrast themes for your dashboard from the Settings tab.

There are quite a few other notable new additions and changes with the Xbox One Fall update. We've listed off a few of these below, but be sure to go to the Xbox Wire to see a full rundown of what's changing, with commentary from Xbox engineering lead Mike Ybarra.

  • It should now be "faster and easier" to move left and right through the horizontal tabs by flicking the left thumb stick or bumpers.
  • A new "Friends in games" notification shows you if a friend is playing the same game
  • Invites now appear in the multiplayer tab of the Guide.
  • The Game Hub for a particular title now shows more information.
  • The Community feed screen now offers a full-screen option to help display more content such as screenshots and gameplay clips.
  • Right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew are now available.
  • A new Microsoft Store logo will replace the old one.
  • The Mixer tab now has previews so you can see more before joining.
  • Broadcasts at 1080p will now happen automatically if your network can support it.
  • On Xbox One X, Mixer can capture gameplay and screenshots in 4K/HDR.

Additionally, this Xbox One Fall update lays the groundwork for the launch of the Xbox One X in November. It adds a page that lets you know how to do things like transfer your games to an external hard drive or copy them over your home network to Xbox One X. You can also start to download 4K content for existing games so you'll hit the ground running if you buy an Xbox One X right at launch. What's more, the store adds a tab that lets you sort by Xbox One X-enhanced games.

This new update is expected to be the Xbox One's last big one of the year. Microsoft doesn't historically release major UI updates in those months because so many new players are coming online and significant changes could lead to confusion.

Xbox One x will..... Not worth anything IMO. If I wanted to update my system every 2 years I'd buy a PC.

There are still millions paying the 360 that haven't even switched to the One.

If Microsoft would concentrate half as much on Exclusive titles and less on UI, getting more power, apps, and other BS, people might purchase more of their consoles. geez.

Microsoft are a lost cause, have been for quite sometime now. The last things they ever did right were Xbox 360 and Windows 7. Down hill ever since. :(

Still can't disable the Mixer tab they force-fed us...

The tabbed "real" menu is not an improvement over its predecessor.

The customized scroll-down screens are okay, but after trying it once I don't see why I'd ever use this at all. Condensed pins work fine.

The new feed layout is atrocious and sloppy. Would prefer to specify "all square" or "all rectangle" as well as sort/priority.

Ads are now more intrusive than the last layout, even if just slightly.

@Pyrosa: you can sort priority. For example my feed only shows friends activities and not the clubs, randos etc.

Just watching the features video and it gears up nicely for the Xbox One X launch. We have things like bulk transfer of games to external hard drive, network copy (locally) from one Xbox to another, ability to download 4K textures/updates, game ordering based on enhanced games etc.

UI is quick for most things. My Games/Apps for me use to be so slow because of the number of games (I have three external disks). Now it shows in an instant. The pins to home, now show game artwork etc so you get a much better feel for the game. Overall much improved and to me more game focussed, less Mixer and other stuff focussed...

@plus_1: Likely an exaggeration, but notice that they've crept over from the right to the left, and gained real estate? Can't really "not see them" like the prev layout.

Mine had Starbucks last night -- not game-related at all. ...and I don't waste time on lining up for coffee, so it's clearly a blast-ad rather than targeted. (i.e., $0 ever on the CC used for XB Store)

I like how they have been consistently adding new features every six months or so.

Just wish they'd settle for a good UI and keep at it. Maybe one designed for a console and not a tablet, like Sony's XMB which is the best IMO.

Looking forward to trying this, glad they released it now. Will either instil me with confidence about the X release or have me cancelling the pre-order. Yes I will cancel a pre-order based on UI if they have this wrong. At the moment enjoying the PS4 simple UI design and replaying Horizon Zero Dawn, such a good game. From what I have seen of the Xbox new UI it looks good so I am hopeful.

@Fallenlords69: It's neither faster nor easier, nor significantly more/less annoying. One more click here, countered by one more customization there, but again countered by one new minor annoyance...

Like they changed for the sake of changing.

@Pyrosa: My Games/Apps shows quickly for me now compared to before. Use to take an age to show my 150+ games, tiles use to keep on refreshing and it took a while to sort itself out. Now just bang and there. Response times seem quicker. Store is still as slow as anything, that could do with a major overhaul. But it is a step in the right direction. I like the fact you can comment on the pre-set tiles, 'show less of this' 'show more of this'. And the bulk transfer and stuff should be useful for sorting things out a little better.

@kanekan-slaugh: One thing I like about the PS4 Interface though is stuff I don't care about, I don't need to worry about. Like Mixer/Community/Entertainment tabs on Xbox I just don't care about. Be nice if I could bury those. But saying that the new Xbox UI is better, more game focussed.

@smashthestars: New Xbox UI is not bad, first impressions. Quicker at pulling up things like My Games/Apps. But things like Store - which seems to be a whole separate type of app, is still slow to me. And although it is more game focussed the new UI I still don't think enough attention is paid to add-ons. Few times now gone into manage game and found I have a couple of add-ons that hadn't been installed. Not that easy to find the things on the store, when you have about three different versions of the games from the store front. But I rant, all things aside certainly a lot better and a lot quicker.

I think most people want speedier disc install times. I never had a problem with the UI, confusing yes, broken no. PS4's is far simpler but that's what makes them different. I say quit f$%#ing with it. Although I no longer have an Xbox One lol.

I really want to trade in my Xbox one fat console for a slim Xbox one s console but the trade in values at eb games are a ripp off :( EB games only offering $100 AU dollars to trade in my Xbox one fat console and l laughed at that price. This was few months ago.

Why is there no more good trade in values to upgrade I just don't see the point anymore :( Looks like my trusted pc gaming system needs to be played again on Windows 10 :)

@sam628: I traded mine in for the S version. It cost me $150 for the trade, but WELL WORTH IT, especially if you travel a lot. You also don't have a power brick to deal with. which is almost worth the price of the upgrade. I've also noticed that games run better on it, specifically Battlefield 1.

@sam628: The FAT is quieter, stays cooler, and if the power brick goes bad just replace it. The S isn't worth it if you have a perfectly good working FAT One. I honestly hate the S model. But I don't support MS anymore, so it doesn't matter to me anyway. Just my opinion though. ;o)

@bubba_666: the hell are you talkin about? The fat 1 makes noise when loading an intense game like bf1 only for maybe 5-8sec but it does, the S has NEVER made a sound and game quality looks much better! Anyone looking to upgrade to the S should do so, you instantly notice the upgrade.

@bubba_666: I have the PS4 and its nothing to brag about. I can't delete notifications at all. I have to jump thru hoops just to set up parties with my friends. My friend can already have a party set up and I go to join and it creates a a party instead. On Xbox is 10x simpler. Also, You can't just delete messages click on a message and delete it. The PS4 system is clunky as hell, not to mention the stupid sidescrolling to find a game which can seem to go on forever if you have lots of games. Most of the time It takes me longer to do simple things on PS4 than it does on my XB1. Feel free to look up my gamertag on PSN if you don't believe me.

@spartanx169x: You can create folders or just use the library for your games.

Do you not use the quick menu for parties? It is really easy. Seems like you don't know how to use the party feature right.

You can simply hit options on a message and choose leave.

@129260: Again this further proves my point. the PS4 UI is not the least bit intuitive. Me and one of my buddies play Battlefield 1 every weekend and at least half the time its a pain in the azz getting us into a party compared to how easy it is on XB. I only just learned by accident that leaving the conversation actually deletes it. Its utterly stupid that I can't just click it from the list of conversations hit a button and delete it. I I don't want to create folders. I want to be at my entire list of games in 2 moves, 3 at the most. fortunately I only play 1 or 2 games at any given time on my PS4 so the main games I play are right there in front with quick access. the PS4 Ui reminds me a lot of the Android system. It simply requires you to do more steps just to do simple things that should be quick and easy.

@spartanx169x: I think it is more you are just used to xbox, so anything different feels weird and wrong. Same if you have an android iphone feels weird. Xbox UI infuriates me. Especially the new update. At least with playstation the interface doesn't change and once you learn it you are good. Xbox constantly changes. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

@129260: that is somewhat true I suppose. however I had an android for 5 years and just got my first iphone about 6 weeks ago. to put it simply, the iphone just works. Period. Although i didn't have a samsung i had a motorola. so mabybe the samsungs are better. But still the iphone in comparison is fluid and rediculously simple for most everything. My only complaint being the headphone jack. But until they completely revamp the android system I will never go back. Setting up parties and looking at friends has always been easy. the PS4 system could be vastly improved in a lot of ways. I will also say I am skeptical about what they have changed with the XB1 Ui. So we will see.
