Just like in North America and Europe, Japan has experienced a huge surge of new releases within the past few weeks. That surge is still continuing, thanks to two recent releases during the week of November 7 to November 13.

Games about funky-haired digital idols were last week's top sellers.

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva sold 184,673 units and was the top-selling title on the Media Creates chart. The rhythm title puts gamers in the shoes of virtual diva Hatsune Miku as they have to press inputs to match the rhythm of a track. This version of the game features nine new songs and 28 returning tracks from past Project Diva titles.

The other new PSP title on the list was the rerelease of Ore no Shikabane wo Koete Yuke (translated into English as "Over My Dead Body"). The game is about a cursed hero who has to raise children to defeat a powerful demon. The role-playing game sold 94,085 units in its debut week. Meanwhile, Super Mario 3D Land and Final Fantasy Type-0 were still hanging around the charts; the former sold 93,441 units while the latter sold 57,091 units last week.

Offsetting the handheld software dominance in the top five slots was Sengoku Basara 3 Utage for the PlayStation 3. A lighthearted take on Capcom's Sengoku Basara series of hack-and-slash action games, the title features a story mode focused on former non-playable characters in the franchise and new Country Unification and Japan Sports modes. The PS3 version sold 124,197 units, while the Wii version sold 50,747 units.

Other notable releases include Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition for the PS3, which sold 39,743 units, and the PS3 version of Battlefield 3, which was still clinging on the chart with 142,171 units sold.

Even with all of the PSP games on the top 10 spots of the chart, the 3DS still reigned supreme on the hardware sales side. Nintendo sold 103,962 units of the 3DS for the week, while Sony sold 23,472 units of the PSP. For the non-portable side, Sony sold 22,919 units of the PS3, while Nintendo sold 11,782 Wii systems.
