Big in Japan Aug. 29 - Sept. 4: Grand Knights History

VanillaWare's latest PSP RPG holds off Monster Hunter's PS3 debut to claim top of software sales charts; 3DS remains hardware sales leader.

Fear of cell phones and tablets aside, handheld systems are still a popular way to get one's game on in Japan, as indicated in the recent Media Create sales update for the week of August 29 to September 4. The 3DS topped the hardware sales charts for the week, while VanillaWare's PSP game Grand Knights History led all software with 64,630 units sold.

Dragons and knights won the sales battle, according to Media Create's sales figures.
Dragons and knights won the sales battle, according to Media Create's sales figures.

Grand Knights History is a turn-based role-playing game where three kingdoms of a fantasy world clash in an all-out war. The game's main feature is unit customization and online play where players represent their kingdoms and fight against each other to gain territory. Developer VanillaWare is best known in the West for games like Muramasa: The Demon Blade, GrimGrimoire, and Odin Sphere. For more information, check out GameSpot's recent coverage on the title.

While the former number-one title was bumped down, it didn't fall far. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD Ver. came in second on the charts, selling 52,792 units for that week. Rhythm Heaven moved up to third place with 22,762 units sold, while Samurai Warriors 3 Empires did not budge an inch from its position with 21,604 units sold.

Corpse Party: Book of Shadows for the PSP made its debut in the charts with 15,249 copies sold. Created by developers 5pb, the first-person adventure game is based on the old Corpse Party game that was originally on the PC and PC-98. This iteration is focused on a group of students who have to get out of a run-down elementary school filled with bodies of lost children and damned spirits. The game features a spirit contamination system where characters experience hallucinations if their sanity meter is depleted.

Another newcomer (if a remake can be considered such) is the 3DS version of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor. This version of the game sold 20,809 units, good enough for fifth place. New additions to the title include full voice acting and an epilogue chapter called "The 8th Day" for veterans to play through.

Outside of the top 10, the sole Xbox 360 representative on the week's sales chart, Monster Hunter Frontier Anniversary 2011 Premium Package, finished in 16th place with 7,953 units sold. Black Rock Shooter dropped from second to 14th place with 11,186 units sold.

Meanwhile, 3DS and PS3 sales were strong, with the former's performance attributed to the previous price drop and the latter being supported by the new Monster Hunter iteration. Despite the major presence of PSP titles, the system is still in third place among hardware on sale for the week.

@dxdevilex0 I am not sure about the 3,177 who bought the XL in Japan, but I just bought one as a gift for my mom. but I hear you, why people still buy PS3 and PSP every week like that, I mean they can't be replacing old systems coz Sony's products live far longer than a golden fish. hard to imagine a Japanese who did not buy one after 5 years from launch

@leeko_link first of all, it is rude to call the Japanese Japs. and you can't compare the Wii or Move to Kinect, I believed Kinect was the Xbox only chance in Japan but due to lack of good games for it it is a hard bargain. other than that, long live paly

If you're Japanese, you honestly don't want buy two systems that plays similar games and you also don't want one that would break on you after many or so months. It's quite simple why Xbox 360 doesn't sell in Japan. One it had similar games to the PS3 and two it's a faulty console, why should the Japs bother with it when they already got the PS3 to fill in their HD needs? They don't need Xbox 360 cuz they got the PS3 and they don't need Kinect cuz they got the Wii. So basically Xbox 360 had no chance in Japan.

as for the ps3 or xbox 360 i choosed the ps3 just as i choosed the ps2 and i never had a xbox im a gamer and the games on the xbox havent appealed to me (im not that into fps or western games for example), i did wait long to get the ps3 though since the ps2 was superior when it came to game exlusives but heavy rain made me buy the ps3 and after that i discovered many gems, and most i play are actually ps3 exclusives i agree with what someone said that xbox360 do need to secure some japanease rpgs to have a chance in japan and well with me... several of their rpgs later got released on the ps3 with additional content like star ocean and eternal sonata also i always think that... well some xbox games will simply show up on the pc anyway...like fable i also fear my friends constant ring of death on her xbox360... and its kinda loud and clumpsy (allthough ps3 slim is clumpsy too...) but in general i think people should just go with whichever of those consoles that got the games they want or both if u can afford and both consoles got exlusives u want

that game looks awesome - i loved muramasa and its graphic style wonder if they will release it in na and europe? not that i have a psp... as for the 3ds devil survivor overclocked i can say that its awesome and i have the original version too - so for me the updates with the game was totally worth it and those who dont have the game at all should go with the voiced 3ds version, it has several important extras that reviews i read dont bother to mention

@Sigil-Otaku True, but Microsoft is not doing that, if they don't come with a major plan to convince the japanese people that it's not only Sony and Nintendo that knows how to make a console they will not get over it. That's why I said that. The PSP sells extremely well in Japan because it have a lot of exclusive games that appeal to the japanese crowd. Most being dating/Sim and JRPGs, so by association with this concept they go and buy the PS3 instead of the Xbox.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's funny, since Xbox 360 is currently the console for Dating Sims (and also visual novels). PS3 has nothing to challenge the Xbox 360, but yes PSP is the handheld of choice even for adult only games.

@GunBladeHero I completely disagree, they should invest again in Japan just invest PROPERLY. I'm a 360 fan and I know it could do well it japan so long as it had the games, when it had the games like Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, Star Ocean etc. coming out it was selling pretty decently but it's only because they never properly secured any of these exclusives that reasons to own a 360 dwindled. People wouldn't buy a console when every exclusive was just a timed exclusive and so they can still get sales so long as they actually put the games out and keep them exclusive. Not to mention this would only benefit the diversity of there library in the west too. It's either they crack the market and keep investing till they actually make money in Japan or they leave it and let Sony and Nintendo have an easy ride in a territory they could easily have money from too. The problem is simply they are not keeping the exclusives.

@dxdevilex0 The DS Lite and XL both have better screen quality. Basically the definative ds experience is on the XL. The 3DS (like the original DS when it released) is just a shoddy prototype. I believe ppl are waiting to actually pick up a game that is a completely new IP (or a badass NEW entry in Mario, Metroid, Kirby, etc...) or pickup an updated model of the 3DS. But regardless the software is much to be desired

I don't get why people still buy the DS lite/i/XL when they could have bought a 3DS which is very cheap now and can play both DS and 3DS games.

Good to see what looks like an original IP doing well. However, I do think Japanese publishers need to get off of their obsession with PSP. I have one and I like it, but not many people outside Japan actually buy stuff for PSP. It's digging their industry into a deeper hole whenever they come out with games just for the system that's dead last in every other territory (or when they don't export, which I'm sure is the case with at least a few of these top 10 titles). I'm hoping when Vita comes out that'll make them start coming out with something for more consoles, but knowing them they'll just do it for 3DS, which is quickly getting itself in the same boat.

Great to see VanillaWare doing well. Kinda sad that Monster Hunter is such a predictable, dominating franchise -- it's honestly a little ridiculous at this point: the Japanese will buy anything MH ... and not much else. It's interesting that the 3DS has been the best sell hardware four weeks running now? It clearly shows that the price point was the thing dissuading people from picking it up, and makes me wonder about the Vita coming in at $250.
