Beyond: Two Souls budget was $27 million - Report

New report from French newspaper reveals supposed production budget for upcoming PlayStation 3-exclusive game.

According to a new report from French newspaper Le Figaro (via CVG), the production budget for PlayStation 3-exclusive Beyond: Two Souls was €20 million (£16.8 million/$27 million).

No Caption Provided

It is not clear if this budget, covered by publisher Sony, includes marketing costs. A Sony representative was not immediately available to comment.

Beyond: Two Souls features Hollywood talent in the form of Oscar-nominated actress Ellen Page (Inception, Juno), as well as Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man, The Boondock Saints) and Kadeem Hardison (A Different World).

The game's soundtrack was produced by Hans Zimmer, a prolific composer whose credits include The Lion King and Pirates of the Caribbean, among others.

The $27 million reported budget for Beyond: Two Souls is in the same ballpark as Quantic Dream's last effort, Heavy Rain. According to co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere, the 2010 PS3 cost around $22 million to produce, another $8 million to promote, and an additional $10 million to distribute. The game generated $100 million, de Fondaumiere said, making it "very profitable."

Beyond: Two Souls launches October 8. A demo will be released on October 1. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

In comparison, GTA 5's budget was ~266 million.

@Commander_Snowy

My guess is at least half of that was on marketing.

I'm assuming that too. I saw countless GTA ads a few weeks before launch. Some on garbage cans, subway entrances, buildings, buses, etc.

@emptycow718 @jhonMalcovich How would Williem Dafoe work though? The game has a female lead.

@emptycow718 @jhonMalcovich Ellen Page is more much more current though. No one really knows who Willem Dafoe is anymore outside of those lame Spiderman movies.

@devild0ogwhite @ElFlechero @StaticPenguin @emptycow718 @jhonMalcovich Ellen Page still has that Juno, Hard Candy, Inception fame.

Willem Dafoe is pretty much a legend, as far as I'm concerned, but a lot of young'ens today wouldn't know his best work.

@ElFlechero @StaticPenguin @emptycow718 @jhonMalcovich Is either actor really relevant though? I haven't seen them in anything in a couple of years (though maybe I'm just not remembering correctly), and that's a lifetime when it comes to hollywood.

I know that's a lot, but in comparison to GTA5 that seems microscopic. Just pre-ordered the game though, and I'm looking forward to it.

That seems like a decently small budget for a game that I've been hearing about so much for so long. I hope that's all actual "Game Developing" costs and not advertising.... I've accidentally seen so much about this game without seeing a single ad (though I suppose that could be the result of having a successful game like Heavy Rain in the family tree....)

Prediction: Ellen Page and friends seek lawsuit again, then promptly dismiss the case after selling millions of copies to consumers thinking it's "the sequel to that first kickass Ellen Page game."

@bgranli @frigginjoe Let's see. People thought it was Ellen Page's likeness in last of Us, due to the similarity and the admitted basis of the character. Ellen page got annoyed and litigious etc. The actual game with Ellen Page is this one. Not going to sell as good, but it may be slightly funny if the same people that were accused of stealing Page's likeness were responsible for big sales because people figured it was a sequel. That's spelled out about as well as it can be.

That budget sounds modest compared to other AAA games. Looks like a definite rental that should probably be enjoyable (yeah I don't buy console games anymore).

It's simple. If a game's story is well told, and the cinematics engaging, it will be a hit. I'm putting my money on Beyond: Two Souls. I believe it's going to be a very good interactive movie...

Lol.

TR had a $100 million budget. Look how it turned out. No profits in return.

Beyond: Two Souls will make much more than $100 million back. PS3 user base is much bigger than it was when Heavy Rain came out, and everyone KNOWS PS3 exclusives are the best on the market. Always have been.

@Prats1993 What exactly are you basing that on? Not every game wants to be GTa or Od. Like heavy rain this game will be nicely profitable for them.

@Prats1993 Ever thought about the possibility that they don't even aim to be as successful as GTA V? It's a completely different type of game AND it's an exclusive PS3-game.

The low budget independent movie to the summer blockbuster of 'GTA V' then. It'll make that back easily. Just hope it is a better game in terms of narrative sense and coherence than 'Heavy Rain' was.

@AjenoMerveilles Yeah, for maybe it was based on the decisions I made during my play through, but Heavy Rain's ending was ridiculous and silly. Don't have a clue how people thought it upped the ante for storytelling sophistication?

I never played a game where I felt some kind of way about losing my character and having to move on with someone else. Being trick and killed by a black guy. Very sophicated.

Looking forward to this. I really hope they designed some interesting puzzles to add more variety to the game. While I enjoyed Heavy Rain, it was a bit slow and repetitive at times and needed something to break up the linear structure of the narrative.

hole cost arond 40milions and having generated 100milois.. I wouldn't call it very profitable. anyway.. I think its fairly stupid to expend 27miloins into producing a NON-GAME bearly interactive experience.

@idosofacility remember that we're not talking about 200mill franchises that end up reinventing the wheel like battlefield or Mass effect. 60 mill for an independent game from a small company is a very profitable game...
