Beyond: Two Souls budget was $27 million - Report

New report from French newspaper reveals supposed production budget for upcoming PlayStation 3-exclusive game.

According to a new report from French newspaper Le Figaro (via CVG), the production budget for PlayStation 3-exclusive Beyond: Two Souls was €20 million (£16.8 million/$27 million).

It is not clear if this budget, covered by publisher Sony, includes marketing costs. A Sony representative was not immediately available to comment.

Beyond: Two Souls features Hollywood talent in the form of Oscar-nominated actress Ellen Page (Inception, Juno), as well as Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man, The Boondock Saints) and Kadeem Hardison (A Different World).

The game's soundtrack was produced by Hans Zimmer, a prolific composer whose credits include The Lion King and Pirates of the Caribbean, among others.

The $27 million reported budget for Beyond: Two Souls is in the same ballpark as Quantic Dream's last effort, Heavy Rain. According to co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere, the 2010 PS3 cost around $22 million to produce, another $8 million to promote, and an additional $10 million to distribute. The game generated $100 million, de Fondaumiere said, making it "very profitable."

Beyond: Two Souls launches October 8. A demo will be released on October 1. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Just played the demo and i'm shocked. Just amazing.

Quantic Dream is among a select few developers who are pushing the boundaries of gaming as art, and probably none of the others are doing it at a AAA level with an eight-figure budget. Kudos to Sony for giving them the resources to achieve their visions. They deserve to reap the rewards.

@theKSMM Getting amazing and terrific famous actors in a video-game is really hard too!

Avatar image for loopy_101

Isn't £10 million+ the standard for AAA titles now? If Beyond Two Souls was able to cost Sony less than £30 million then I'd say they've done well.

Avatar image for pip3dream

I'll get this game, but im not anywhere near as excited about it as I was Heavy Rain. At the moment I don't have any grasp really of what it's about... And super naturaly entity type stores rarely appeal to me. Part of heavy rain's appeal was its visceral, gritty, brutal and realistic vibe.

Avatar image for dreamgreed

@pip3dream Trust me it will be a great experience. Just make sure you finish it and everything will come together.

Avatar image for euphoric666

So much respect for Quantic Dream, releasing an killer title in the beginning of the generation, and another killer one at the end. That`s the way to go, take your time to produce an REAL GOOD GAME.

This could be much more of a game than most recent games. Interactive experiences are full fledged games, as long as the stuff you decide to do completely change story progression and/or endings. Think about The Walking Dead, one of the best games we had for the past 2-3 years.

Please guys, stop acting like 10 year olds (this is not a game, bwa bwa). And if you are 10 year olds, please wait until you get older before you make up your mind about what's a game and what's not.

@horizonwriter @nurnberg

Very true!
It's interesting that you'd mention the lack of advertisement. Take a look at that budget again--$27m! And then look at games like Bioshock and GTA V--$200m+. Advertisement is where the money gets burnt.

There was little advertisement for Heavy Rain as well, yet it gave the devs and pubs a healthy profit. With B:TS it seems the same path is being taken, but no doubt for a more larger profit.

It should work out for 'em--no doubt I'm definitely stoked for this game! (:

I'm still not sure about this one...I loved Heavy Rain and Fahrenheit I'll keep watch.

Avatar image for Prats1993

Fail movie, *cough* i mean game.

Avatar image for snaketus

@Prats1993 Doesn't look that much fail to me.

Avatar image for Batmanager

The acting and the female lead character in the game make me angry. I'm so gonna skip it.

My problem with the acting?
It's bad... just look at it. There is barely any emotion in the faces during the game engine cutscenes and Juno looks so young that it's hard for me to take it seriously at all in such a setting.

My problem with the lead character being a female?
Usually it wouldn't bother me at all, but in this game it does. We have a lead female character being around in Somalia or whatever that is and taking on a bunch of bad guys. Good for her, but the imagination that something like that could be happening for real and if he would get caught - she would get raped to death :-7 Kinda hard to identify yourself with that particular character at that point.

I wish all of you fun, if you check the game out, but it's simply nothing for me.

Avatar image for twisted_sith

@Batmanager this game looks decent. but nothing you just said makes sense. you are a moron.

Avatar image for RobDev

@Batmanager you are seriously saying that a female character that has full control of a supernatural entity isn't realistic defeating bad guys because "in real life she would be raped to death". In real life she wouldn't have control over a SUPERNATURAL ENTITY. without that i doubt she would be anywhere near bad guys in somalia or whatever. Jeez!

Avatar image for tightwad34

So if the budget was 27 mil, then what is it now?

Avatar image for nurnberg

Too bad the game will flop. They won't make money from this.

Avatar image for JamesThePrince

@nurnberg I love how people assume how a game will "flop" when they haven't even played it yet. Did you just come back in your time machine and played the game little man?

Avatar image for RobDev

@nurnberg They made $60 million from heavy rain when they were a virtually unheard of studio. so they will almost certainly make money off this. They aren't angling for the mainstream gamers dollar.

Avatar image for snaketus

@RobDev @nurnberg "They aren't angling for the mainstream gamers dollar. " And thank god for that!

Avatar image for horizonwriter

@nurnberg Why do you think that it'll flop?

Avatar image for nurnberg

@horizonwriter @nurnberg The game has basically no hype going for it and it's release is next to COD, Battlefield, Assassin's Creed, etc... Also the subject matter doesn't look very appealing for the mainstream gamer.

Avatar image for snaketus

@nurnberg I'll get this one any day over COD, Battlefield or AC.

Avatar image for horizonwriter

@nurnberg I don't know. It appeals to a different crowd than those games and Quantic developed a pretty solid following with Heavy Rain. Speaking of which, that game's subject matter didn't seem like it would appeal to the mainstream gamer either but it did quite well. I do agree that it's been really quiet on the PR side of things though. You'd think with such recognizable stars and their very accurate likenesses in-game that Sony would be hyping it on the commercial side more. They're not exactly pulling out all the stops as a publisher.

Avatar image for Incubus420

What a reasonable budget to feature real actors and actresses.

Avatar image for Ayato_Kamina_1

@Incubus420 I thought so too. Not sure how I feel about involving them and the motion capture thing, but if that's all it cost for them to develop it's pretty good.

Avatar image for bbq_R0ADK1LL

So it costs a tenth as much as GTA V. I predict it will be better than a tenth as good.

I'm actually looking forward to this game, Quantic Dream are great. If it's a short game I might just hire it though. PS3 games are too expensive.

Avatar image for tightwad34

@bbq_R0ADK1LL Perfect logic coming from bbq roadkill. And I didn't know you could hire a game. Most likely it will be pretty short, but if it's anything like Heavy Rain it could have a bunch of different endings.

Avatar image for bgna8980

@tightwad34 LMAO I was like wtf did he mean by "hire a game"? I don't know any words, that could make that sentence logical.

Avatar image for jecomans

@bbq_R0ADK1LL Try something like or They are generally much cheaper than bricks and mortar retail.

Avatar image for bgna8980

@bbq_R0ADK1LL @Lhomity @bgna8980 @tightwad34 $100 USD? That's too much man. Why don't you buy these games off ebay then?

Avatar image for bbq_R0ADK1LL

@Lhomity @bgna8980 @tightwad34 Yeah, I'm from New Zealand, you'll have to excuse my use of 'British English'.

Here the used market for games isn't big so it's not usually worth selling or trading in, but I can rent a game for a few days from the local video rental store for a reasonable price. Full priced PS3 games are around $120 which is about US$100 at todays rate so you can see why I'm not keen on buying a game that I can finish in 3 days.

Avatar image for bgna8980

@Lhomity @bgna8980 @tightwad34 I could not have been more ignorant. Thanks for clearing this up. ^.^

Avatar image for Lhomity

@bgna8980 @tightwad34 'Hire' is commonly used in in British English, the same way 'rent' is. Car hire, removal truck hire, equipment hire. Video stores are places where you can "hire" movies and games, for example.

Google: definition hire

hire /hī(ə)r/

Verb - Employ (someone) for wages.
Noun - The action of hiring someone or something.

Avatar image for zintarr

Going to be sad when the game flops.

I keep watching the vids but they just do nothing for me.

Avatar image for soulless4now

No wonder Sony likes that studio so much.

Avatar image for DjTIEST0

yet another sony esclusive video game more about video then game im petting it free via YouTube than pay

Avatar image for WskerFan

@DjTIEST0 you can say that about a a lot of great games, but you'll never get the same experience unless you play it yourself

Avatar image for chris33183

Bargain Bin purchase for me

Avatar image for JoshDPU

That's actually a pretty modest budget for a non-indie game these days

Avatar image for joseph_mach

This one has just completely dropped off of my radar. I was pretty interested at first, but the more than they've shown of it, the less I've thought about purchasing it. I've got enough games to keep me busy until next-gen, and if anything, I'll just wait for a price drop on it.

Avatar image for blueboxdoctor

I wonder how much of that went to the actors. Judging from the gameplay footage and previews, not much went to controls, because they look pretty clunky. Still, the game looks interesting, I'll probably check it out in a few months once it hits $40. The ambition of the story and all its different settings has me interested, I just can't stand the arrogance of the devs when they talk about the game.

Avatar image for Ayato_Kamina_1

@blueboxdoctor Yeah, I remember reading a comment from the heavy rain dev that made me think he was unbelievably arrogant considering heavy rain wasn't THAT good. I'll steer clear of this game I imagine.

Avatar image for Tielo1

That's a very expensive indie title. Yes I know Sony does the distribution but Quantic Dream is not owned by anyone. I just love how Sony supports these type of niche experiences. It's the only game I actually pre orderd and if it's half as good as Heavy Rain I'll have an amazing time playing this game over and over again.

Avatar image for Death_Masta187

So star citizen getting 19.8 million (at the time of this writing) is pretty good funding for an indie dev.

Avatar image for StaticPenguin

I dunno, I tried to be interested in this game because I love Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy but man, this game just seems all over the place.

Avatar image for Ripper_TV

Lacks soul.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

That seems fairly....reasonable for a AAA game.
