Bethesda Wants Your Blood … For An Evil Within Promotion

Publisher partners with American Red Cross to hold an official blood drive at QuakeCon 2014 next weekend.

Video game conventions are usually all about playing games, spending time with friends, and getting to hear directly from creators. QuakeCon 2014, which will be held next weekend, will have all of that, but also something quite different. Bethesda announced today that it has partnered with the American Red Cross to hold an official blood drive at the show.

The blood drive is a promotional effort to hype the release of this October's horror game The Evil Within--a game where blood is often lost. The blood drive itself is called The Good Within Blood Drive. If you decide to give blood at the event, you will receive an official The Evil Within "chill pack" to mark your donation.

The blood drive itself will take place at the QuakeCon 2014 event site--the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas--on Friday, July 18 and Saturday, July 19. The show itself runs from Thursday, July 17 through Sunday, July 20. Attendees who want to give blood can sign up to do so on-site. Of course, you'll need to be at least 17 years old and meet the American Red Cross requirements for donating blood, which you can read at the organization's website.

"QuakeCon has a great group of attendees who we think will want to help the community by donating blood," Bethesda marketing executive Pete Hines said in a statement. "The American Red Cross is a terrific organization, and we're thrilled to welcome them to QuakeCon."

For its part, American Red Cross communications manager Jan Hale said the organization is happy that Bethesda approached the health group for the special, if not unexpected, promotion.

"The Red Cross is grateful for Bethesda Softworks' invitation to host a blood drive during such a critical time," Hale said. "The summer months are a particularly difficult period for blood collections and being a part of this event gives us more opportunities to help save lives."

QuakeCon 2014 is free and open to the public. You can register to attend at the event's website right now.

In addition to the Evil Within-inspired blood drive, QuakeCon 2014 is expected to bring news about the upcoming Doom game currently in development for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. GameSpot will bring you all the news from the show as it happens.

The Evil Within launches October 21 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. Developed by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami and his studio Tango Gameworks, the title is described as a "back to basics" horror game.

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

@charlievo What a stupid comment. Not everything published by Bethesda is 'made' by Bethesda.

Gamebryo is the engine I'm guessing your spamming articles about being "crap" and "bug"/glitches in them? All these ridiculous complaints fall on Fallout3, New Vegas, Oblivion, & Skyrim.

Played the Rage, Dishonoured, D00M BFG, or Wolf New Order? No, cease the thought right?

If you're unfamiliar with the engine this game is using (id Tech5) or the man directing the project (Shinji Mikami) that's you being obtuse.

Wait for news on Fallout 4, Todd Howard is likely running that project.

Definitely a way better idea than that "Sin to Win" thing EA came up with.

I'm not old enough to give blood. Only 13. Otherwise I wouldn't mind I suppose! :D No idea what blood type I am though. Does that matter?

@volted01 No, they test blood type after donation. Afterall, people can be mistaken as to their own type, so a test always more reliable.

« I want to hear what you really think. You want more than just little blood. You want to be drenched in it, mired by its foul stench. Am I right? Am I? Oh, just say that I'm right! Heh heh heh...» The wise words of Titchy Gren.

I am a bit afraid of giving blood. I once bled a lot after a teeth extraction operation and passed out a few times.

@nurnberg I gave blood and it went well. However, literally seconds before I was about to give blood, a guy next to me just finished giving blood and when he got up, he slowly and swayed and fell down and started twitching(he was fine in the end). I was afraid but after they stuck the needle, it wasn't so bad.

I'm a blood donor since several years, but I'm not supposed to donate until the end of this month. Then, of course, there's the matter of getting from Sweden to Dallas.

On a side note been wondering if The Evil Within is going to run at 60fps on consoles. Weird how it is an IDtech 5 game and all but gameplay footage so far doesn't look it. Anyone know ? I can donate some blood for your time.

@everson_rm @nl_skipper @yoda101280 Swedish here, it's different between hospitals, but my hospital gives out movie tickets during the summer months to encourage more people to give blood. Outside of summer, there's a number of gifts you can choose from. I usually choose a coupon for 9 dollars, viable in most stores.

I hope donors realize it's a bad idea to walk around a convention for hours right after giving. There should be some special exclusive trailers or presentation they can sit in a private booth and watch right after to get them proper rest.

@nl_skipper Don't want to cause a riot or sound like a social justice warrior, but I see that the Red Cross (just like my local hospital in Sweden) bans men who have sex with other men from donating blood. I've heard it's because STD's, especially AIDS is more common among them, but I don't know about that. Sure, I'll accept it if there's reliable data to support it and I assume they made that decision based on good evidence, but I still doubt that those men f*ck around more than straight males. The whole Casanova image of sleeping with many women (without protection of course) is something that many straight males see as desirable.

@Hurvl @nl_skipper It's an antequated practice stemming from the AIDS emergence of the 80's. The ARC is currently pushing to remove that ban.

@Hurvl @nl_skipper I assume it's all based on statistics, and they do screen for a lot of things like if you have visited certain countries within a certain time frame, and lots of other things. But then again, we don't really know I guess, and we also don't know if the stats are now out of date.

Good Casanova point. However most men can't pull it off :).

@everson_rm @yoda101280 The ARC will give you juice and cookies for donating. Some places will pay for the blood, but that's a last resort since the people who sell blood are more likely to have bloodbourne infections.

@everson_rm @yoda101280 I think they do, but that may only be for plasma maybe not red blood cells. Not sure though... Canadian here, we don't get anything for it, well except free cookies and juice!

@RC-Sev Who's forcing you..? If anything it's better to drink and smoke soon after because it hit you extra hard :P

Don't use such a lame excuse to avoid donating blood, just admit you're selfish.

Hey that is pretty cool. Not enough people give blood in my opinion. Where I work they have a blood drive monthly. Out of a company of 500 people they consider it a good day if more than 20 people give blood.

@Dark_Wr4ith Yah, I have the universal blood type that they never have enough of so I should get out and do it more often. For some reason though, I get sick and sometimes pass out with needles lol. To this day I have no idea why but I have had to have smelling salts popped open to wake my butt up many times :(

Didn't Bethesda do some event for the launch of Wolfenstein too in the states? it's a shame they don't do that in other countries as well.

Donating blood is a fairly decent thing to do in general, making it part of a promotional is a bit iffy, but hey the blood will likely go to good use, and you get a litle something for it.

All in all a hell of alot better then showing up with some rubber monster and whatnot promotional.
