Bethesda QA tester beats Skyrim in just over 2 hours

Internal speed-run competition yields 2:16:10 playtime for studio's latest sprawling Elder Scrolls fantasy role-playing game.

The Elder Scrolls franchise has developed a reputation for offering hours of gameplay spread across reaching open-world environments. However, for Bethesda Softworks QA tester Sam Bernstein, "hours" is just barely plural with his speed run of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Skyrim will likely take a bit longer than two hours for everyone else.
Skyrim will likely take a bit longer than two hours for everyone else.

With Skyrim closing in on its November 11 ship date, Bethesda recently held its traditional internal speed-run contest, and Bernstein took the top finishing time at 2:16:10. According to a post on Bethesda's blog, that speed-run time is about an hour longer than the top times for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Bernstein and the development team's Jeff Browne were likely candidates for the top of the speed-run charts, as they also clocked the fastest times in Bethesda's previous release, Fallout 3. Although they took totally different routes through the game, Bernstein finished only a mere 20 seconds sooner than his competitor.

There are no special rules in play when it comes to these speed runs, according to the Bethesda blog. The only stipulation is that no cheats are allowed.

The point which people are missing is that the game is almost twice as long as Oblivion if you rush through it and ignore all other things there are to do. Therefore just imagine how great the game will be if you play through it at a normal pace and take time to enjoy every little aspect of the game.

oh and finishing a games different to completing it on the speed runs they go from a-z bypassing b,c,d etc etc all dialogue would of been skipped most towns not visited and doubt any of the 150+ dungeons explored i'd spent 200+ hours on Oblivion and 100+ on fall out and if he finished them in just over an hour and skyrim took nearly an hour more then do the math for yourself i reckon I'll spend over 150 hrs on skyrim without playing any dlc's with a gam like Skyrim you want to savour everything not rush through it.

Skip dialogue, run through dungeons, focus on main objective. This certainly is dumb game spot post. Sometimes i wonder what they're acttually trying to convey. Morrowind was nighmare, finding your location rembering where you left your loot, but what interesting world it was tho no where near 1 hours. more like year.

Pretty pointless.....all of bethesda's games CAN be finished extremely quickly if you only do the main quest. And I mean only....no sidetracking to mess around at all. This isn't news.

@carnivalshow that is not true I have played through oblivion on hard without the use of summoning spells in fact summoning spells makes the game boring to me I rather use a shield and sword I have this one set of armor that all I have to do is block the creatures will kill themselves because of the reflect damage/magic the armor had I didn't used it much because it made it way to easy almost has easy has using summoning spells

@wisealex You're right about that. I both FO3 and NV a lot of quests could be bypassed like that. I hope that's the deal behind it.

@Mega_Skrull The Actual campaign will be a lot longer. They do speed runs by cutting out a lot of the campaign (finding people before you are told to, etc. Like finding your father in Fallout 3 before all the quests that are supposed to precede it). Basically it requires a very good knowledge of the game and how it can be bypassed and occasionally glitched, check out the Morrowind and Oblivion speed runs on youtube.

@carnivalshow Apparently The Elder Scrolls to you is 'hard mode and summoning spells.' Your three posts were all necessary.

And this is what they are doing instead of real bug testing. Yay -_- Other than that, I know the main quests in Oblivion, Fallout 3 and NV were quite short, but 2 hours and a quarter sounds like very short. I don't know how to feel about this in particular, I've loved the 200 hours I've put into each one with all the side content.

It's like Oblivion or Fallout 3, if you'd already beat the game before and remembered where the main locations were in the main questline you'd know how to skip large chunks of it . Most of the main questline in fallout 3 and oblivion involved figuring out where to go next. You eliminate the need to do that and you could knock 6-8 hours off easily. Not to mention you don't need to listen to conversations or fight almost anything.

@mrsniper83 so you want them to post a complete run-through of a game that's not even out yet? Do I even need to point out why they would never do that?

@ exedeath: yeah you really went into every dungeon and completed every side mission in 38 hours. Why would you even try boasting such a thing on a site dedicated to people who actually play these games. Machismo like that requires proof and I VERY much doubt you have that. No way I'm attempting a speed run. The world deserves absorption as you go through it. Why waste all that beauty?

sound interesting,it could be a fun way to reply my old games and see how fast i can run thru em,but it would be awesome if the x360 or consoles in general can have lik a build in timer that shows the fastest completion time of all the games you have played, maybe speedrun can have their own achivement points outside of the game achivements, so how about it ms,how abt a system update, please pretty please

That's a good sign, considering it's about an hour more than the fastest for both Oblivion and Fallout 3.

2 hours means about 20+ hours of storyline. Don't worry, @Jaga_Telesin . It doesn't mean the game or the main storyline is short. People on fuse say that Morrowind speedrun time was about 5 to 6 minutes. So you see?! Nothing to worry about!

@Jaga_Telesin Honestly, I've never met a person who bought Elder Scrolls for the main quest. it's the side quests and world that usually attracts the crowd. I understand many want a great story but the world always makes up for the story's shortcomings.

@Jaga_Telesin Did you read the whole article or just the headline? It was a competition to see who could beat it the fastest, they weren't taking their time exploring or anything. And 2 hours and 16 minutes is still an hour longer than it took them to speedrun Fallout 3 and Oblivion. And those game weren't short by any means.

I hope no one considers this "good news" in any form. In fact, it reflects poorly on the construction of the main quest, that you can speed through it as deftly as he did.

Amazing. If it took him twice as long just to finish Skyrims story, then thats beautiful. With all the sidequests to do, places to see, dungeons to rob, weapons/armor to collect, the arena, leveling up, magic to learn, and dragons to kill i can safely say NO ONE will be finishing this game in 2 hours. hell, not even 20 hrs.

I'm sure they're not saying "hey go speed run this game" and no one will (mostly). This little contest is only so that we know how long the main quest line is and nothing more. That must of half ruined the game for the testers... kinda sucks.
