Bethesda QA tester beats Skyrim in just over 2 hours

Internal speed-run competition yields 2:16:10 playtime for studio's latest sprawling Elder Scrolls fantasy role-playing game.

The Elder Scrolls franchise has developed a reputation for offering hours of gameplay spread across reaching open-world environments. However, for Bethesda Softworks QA tester Sam Bernstein, "hours" is just barely plural with his speed run of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Skyrim will likely take a bit longer than two hours for everyone else.
Skyrim will likely take a bit longer than two hours for everyone else.

With Skyrim closing in on its November 11 ship date, Bethesda recently held its traditional internal speed-run contest, and Bernstein took the top finishing time at 2:16:10. According to a post on Bethesda's blog, that speed-run time is about an hour longer than the top times for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Bernstein and the development team's Jeff Browne were likely candidates for the top of the speed-run charts, as they also clocked the fastest times in Bethesda's previous release, Fallout 3. Although they took totally different routes through the game, Bernstein finished only a mere 20 seconds sooner than his competitor.

There are no special rules in play when it comes to these speed runs, according to the Bethesda blog. The only stipulation is that no cheats are allowed.

@Joefatty2x4, you don't have to call people idiots, we all read the article and understand it very well. I mean come on we know Elders Scrolls games are fully of content. It just the time he took for the speed run was 2 hrs, even with skipping text and knowing where to go, How did he do that

I pity that guy actually, because he can't enjoy skyrim like us, and if any normal player finishes the main story in 2 hours, you're missing the point.

Damn you guys really need to read the article before you get worked up and post something. Didn't you hear that this speed run took him an hour longer than the ones for oblivion and fallout 3. Do you remember how long those story lines were? Well, I'm pretty sure this one is gonna be even longer.

I'm not sure it's wise to go public with the top speed run time for the exact reason we're seeing right here: a lot of bad readers now think the game only takes two hours. Seems like it would have been better to post the speed run time well after the game has released in order to give players a challenge.

Without cheats? Getting from one end to another in oblivion/fallout 3 would take a good chunk of the hour?

Man, people have no brains sometimes. Did you people even read this story? THEY DID A SPEED RUN that took an hour longer to beat than Fallout 3 and Oblivion. Both of those games had pretty long main stories. You guys make me scared for humanity. You can't even read things right. This game will have hundreds of hours of content just like Oblivion. Stop being babies about NOTHING

Raise your hand if you are one of the short sighted that read this article and thought the actual game will take you 2 hrs to complete.

I hope the main story is better than oblivion, I must have spent about 20 hours on it only to find that 6 people joined me to close the oblivion gate :D

Well if he just beat the main quest, that's one thing but no way anyone can finish the side quests and lots of optional stuff in that time, it's downright impossible ( unless you use cheat, of course ) no matter how you look at it.

@MooncalfReviews Did you not read the article, it was a speed run. Took an hour longer than oblivion or fallout 3, its not going to be short.

What I notice is this: "Bernstein took the top finishing time at 2:16:10. According to a post on Bethesda's blog, that speedrun time is about AN HOUR LONGER than the top times for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3." Bethesda said some while back that they wanted to make a shorter main quest. As dissapointing as I found that to be, if a speed run takes an hour longer than Oblivion and Fallout 3, it has to have some content, right? Unless you felt the mainquest of those games were much too short also, of course...

Bethesda= FAIL!!! :P I might get it when they do the GOTY and it drops in price. Bethesda games are fun for a few hours but get old do to boring quests. Go here kill this guy, grab this item, stalk this lady. I gets old. Plus there are never any large fights where you take on 12 or more bandits or anything. You always feel underpowered. It is really just good for modding. Which is where the fun lies.

It's all about just exploring the wilderness and abandoned forts. I'd stay up til 2am sometimes on Oblivion just searching crates and sacks of grain.. Man I had no life :P

I wanted the story line to be different than the sidequests, dungeon exploration, now theese news come out.... Well, if the main story is short, then make it be epic at least!

In another words, they are pulling their usual crap with a minimal main story. Starting to think Skyrim is going to disappoint.

@ ele975 yeah I though that was the case. Even still, that's still some serious speed! @ whoever voted my comment down - my comment wasn't negative, just bewilderment that any RPG can be completed that quick. Skyrim is one of the 3 games I have been looking forward to most this year and fully intend to sink MANY hours into it come 11-11-11! Also, why are so many people getting so stressed out about this article?! No-one is suggesting that the game is short/bad because of this speed run, just highlighting that it's possible. No-one is actually going to play the game that way (well, no normal people anyway), and GS are not suggesting that they will! I think we all agree that no matter what, this game is going to make us loose jobs/girlfriends/wives etc.....

Of course a QA tester can fly through the main quest, this isn't news. Gamespot, seeing as how your behind on screenshots (12 new SSs released on Oct 7th) you need to be focused on that.

Enjoying a game to it's fullest doesn't mean rushing through it just to see how fast I can complete it. So what, it took him 2 hours FOR THE MAIN QUEST ONLY. Doesn't deter my excitement for the game one bit... I can't wait to see some of the Mods created.

If you developed something, you know how it works, and you know every shortcut and trick to bypass certain things and maybe skip certain things/parts altogether. I'm not surprised at all. I know that the game will still give me hours and hours of play time. No doubt at all....

@Hodge996 A speedrun is where they only focus on finishing the game and ignore everything else, they skip all conversations, they don't loot any dungeons that's part of the main storyline. And i think they also used quick travel from the map. I'm sure the main storyline will take quit a while to finish, considering it took them an hour longer to do than in Oblivion and Fallout 3!

Ok, am I missing something - the whole main campaign can be finished in just over 2 hours?! Jeeeeeyzus, I can't even comprehend how that's possible! I played through Dragon Age Origins a few times (normally, not with the intention of doing it quickly - quite the opposite in fact) and I can't imagine being able to finish even the core story bits in that sort of time.... Good skills sir

I think 2:16:10 for a speedrun is actually really good most rpg nowaday are really short and only take about 20 hours to finish and you can most of the time easily speedrun those games under 1 hour. Dungeon siege 3,WKC 1 & 2,Nier,DragonAge 1 & 2,Trinity Universe,FFXIII etc. All game you can easily finish under 20 hours the normal way and most likely can finish them under 1 hour with a speedrun.

Character creation, main quest, side quests, factions, exploration, dungeon crawling, hunting, slaying dragons, general slaying, and hell even flower picking, and a shed load more to do in Skyrim. I spit on your 2 hour playthrough!

To be honest, rushing through FO3's main quest in a little over 1 hour wasn't very hard. You could skip a good chunk of it very easily.

It takes me an hour just to get through the character creation How many main missions is there it takes ages to walk to new areas before you can fast travel, how can they finish the main story in 2:16:10. I can't wrap my head around that, how long would a boss fight take, you need to have a decent level to make battles easy, or you'd die a lot. How is it possible, I need to see this speed run video

If it's an hour longer than Oblivion's speedrun then a Skyrim normal playthrough may be 200 hours longer than Oblivion's normal playthrough. Guess I'll be seeing dragons in my dreams every night from 11-11-11. That if I sleep at all....!

Like 90% of posters are stupid. The point is, the game is going to be LONG, that is what gamespot is trying to convey here. And possibly issue a starting point as a challenge for all those speed runners out there to try and top.

@Dante200X Maybe you're missing the point. This game took them one hour more to finish than previous games. I don't know if that means double the quests or what.
