Bethesda Commits To Single-Player, But "Be Patient" For Elder Scrolls 6, Bosses Say

"Everyone should be very patient."

Bethesda usually plays its cards close to the vest, but it outlined some long-term plans at E3 2018 by announcing both the long-rumored Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6. With both games on the horizon, producer Todd Howard and marketing boss Pete Hines are committing their studios to single-player experiences, but again urging patience in the same breath.

"We've been talking about it for a decade, we started putting things on paper five, six years ago, and active development was from when we finished Fallout 4, so two and a half, three years," Howard told The Guardian. "Everyone should be very patient [for Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6]. It's gonna take a while for what we have in mind to come out."

The more immediate release will be Fallout 76, which is an always-online multiplayer game. That said, single-player games aren't going anywhere in Bethesda's company culture. "Single-player is still a thing; it might continue to grow or evolve, but it's part of who we are, and we still think there's room to be successful," Hines said. "That doesn't mean that we should keep doing things the way we did five or 10 years ago--we've got to continue to change how we approach it."

Howard added that he understands players concerns that single-player games are becoming less prominent, and says it would be his concern as well.

"Games have gotten so big and interesting that they've moved beyond the toy/entertainment space," he said. "It's not just a diversion from their regular lives; for a lot of people it becomes an important part of their lives. I think we see that across a lot of games now, where people are getting joy and personal pride out of the time they spend in them ... Games are unique in that. They can put you in a place; they transport you. That's why we've always done big, open-world stuff: it's what a game does really well. We like technology, we like storytelling, we like art. But saying, 'Hey, look what we made the game do'--that is, on a day-to-day basis, on a week-to-week basis, the most rewarding."

All that means the company's long-term plans are pretty well set, which echoes what we've heard before. In June, Howard told us that he already knows the release date for Elder Scrolls 6, but that it would be "foolish" to say it now.

I predict the elder scrolls 6 will be mediocre at best and I also predict that Starfield will just be Fallout 4 in space. Yuck.

I am not impressed by Bethesda this year at all when it comes to single player games. I keep hearing "trust us" , "we haven't ditched single player"...yeah right...actions speak louder than words...

Yes! I love Skyrim! But Elder Scrolls 6 need have both single player and coops players (offline) up to 2 or 3 or 4 players on same HDTV separate screens wold be much better when join in team to fight other monsters and bosses.

Online is not important to me.

Please Bethesda, make Elder Scrolls 6 have both options for single player and coops players (offline) up to 4 people to play them together in battle to fight against monsters and bosses. :) It will be epic and awesome!

Dragon Quest Builders 2 will have offline and online coops players (2 to 4 players).

@consoleclassix: this is a classic RPG , these series are. what you mean coop?? it doesnot work in these bethesda game's framework. these are old school RPGs so no please dont use any thing online in that . just like fallout 76 which will be a failure. there are lots of online multiplayer games out there you can play so just leave elder series alone.

Bad feeling about the upcoming ES. Skyrim was streamlined enough.

@cboye18:

Methought Oblivion was accessible enough already. Like it was time to disregard superfluous technological considerations and inclusive pandering while investing development resources on recuperating the complexities of the past. We got Skyrim instead, and it's not like they made great technical strides with it. The LOD implementation was godawful! ?

Somehow I have a bad feeling about TESVI considering what Bethesda's focus is on now, but I just hope I'm wrong.

I like open-world single player experiences more than multiplayer games, so can't wait for more of them, especially The Elder Scrolls VI :)

My prediction is that starfield is going to be a late generation game that will launch on both current gen and next gen systems. While Elder Scrolls 6 will decisively be a next gen game.

Right. Be patient. No problem. I'll just forget about Fallout 76 while being patient since I'm only interested in single player games and not some bullshit multiplayer crap. Hope Bethesda can be patient waiting for my money.

@naija: Given how much money big multiplayer service games make when they're successful, I doubt Bethesda is going to sweat not getting your dough.

@naija: "and not some bullshit multiplayer crap." I understand your opinion, but I have concerns if Bethesda will financially make it in the future, they really are an example as a studio that still invests in new single player titles. They wanted to be more than a studio that is only known for the Elder Scrolls series and Fallout. But hopefully multiplayer games can support Bethesda to continue their policy in making (new kind of) single player games.

@naija: Its never good enough anyway. Some complain that games come out unfinished and too quickly and now we have people complain that companies take their time to bring out a good product... If you ask me I would rather more companies take the stance that Bethesda is now taking with TES -

@nibbin1191: Actually, yeah. Whenever I have conversations on gaming medias or forums and say I'd rather have Bethesda take their time and release TES games that pushes boundaries always further than having TES become a generic yearly release, they are 5 or 6 to answer they would rather have TES become yearly because Bethesda can't make polished games anyway. I mean, seriously, who the heck would want one of the most beloved open world game ever to become another CoD???

@waelse1: ha, for sure. 2022 is probably too early but 11/22/33 could almost be a plausible date for TESVII. Even if Starfield was 2023, 10 years after that for TESVI would be bonkers :)

Edit: also props to you my fellow 2002 Gamespot joiner

@khallaian: Props to you too, a lot of years. I was making a joke but agree with you Todd must be thinking of some odd series of numbers or anniversary. For instance 03/25/2024 would be 30 years after ES1 was released.

All I care about is to at least play Co-op with my friends. It would be nice to play Skyrim or Fallout 4 with just my friends. I do understand the issue about keeping it Singleplayer. If they could do both, I’m all for it.

I’ve already gotten back into Skyrim again cause the TES6 trailer lol. Mods can totally make a game feel like it was just released not too long ago.

@Sevenizz: For me multiplayer games are too repetitive. You play the same maps over and over with the goal of killing other players. Gets old fast.

@Sevenizz: That's your opinion and not the majority of people's. On the other hand multiplayer games are boring, filled with mischief, bots, crazy foul mouthed kids etc etc. See, that's another person's perspective.

Happy to hear what they said about SP for the most part.. still a little worried about the "That doesn't mean that we should keep doing things the way we did five or 10 years ago--we've got to continue to change how we approach it." line though.. : |

@James_xeno: There is nothing to worry about. You should actually be happy that Bethesda doesn't want TES6 to be Skyrim 2 or Morrowind 2. Franchises always go stale once a dev stop trying to innovate. The famous "don't fix what's not broken" is a very interesting philosophy, but you can't always serve your customers the exact same meal. At some points, they want something new and fresh to put their teeth on. I'm very happy Oblivion was not Morrowind, Skyrim was not Oblivion and that TES 6 won't be Skyrim.

@starjay009: @James_xeno: If they continue to approach development of their games in the same fashion as 5 to 10 years ago then their competitors will start to outrun them with better or newer features. For a company it is always good to critically look back at the cycles they have been through in the past to see if they can improve. Why you would link this to Bioware which was bought by EA (the reason for Anthem's existance) makes no sense.
