Best Video Game Writing Nominees Announced, See Them All Here

Madden 18 and Horizon: Zero Dawn are among them.

The Writers Guild of America has announced its nominees for best video game writing for 2017, with Madden NFL 18, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and others making the list.

A Madden game getting a writing nomination may sound odd. But this year's game has a story-focused mode called Longshot featuring Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali. It tells the twisting and turning story of a football player's pursuit to make it to the NFL. The mode was one of our favourite parts of this year's game.

The other nominees this year for "Outstanding Achievement in Video Game Writing" include Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow. You can see a full rundown of this year's nominees and their credited writers below, as posted on the WGA's website.

Any game released in the time between December 1, 2016 and November 30, 2017 was eligible for the Outstanding Achievement in Video Game Writing award. However, the game needed to have on-screen credits and the credited writers must have already been or applied to be a member of the WGA Video Game Writers Caucus when the scripts were submitted.

The winners will be announced on Sunday, February 11. Panels comprised of video game writers and Writers Guild members will vote to determine the winner.

Can't say for Madden, but Horizon was great. I enjoyed the story, the world, the pacing and the characters and their conversations. It was all written very well, especially for a video game. But I think there really should've been more nominees, like Wolfenstein 2 or Hellblade for example.

Wasn't aware of the Futurama game. On a related note, Futurama the show had excellent writing, so if even if a modicum of that effort was put into the game, I bet it's great...from a writing standpoint (looking at the freemium gameplay).

@lionheartssj1: I wasnt either, so i looked it up. I just can't try any more of those games, even if it is Futurama. I don't want to buy 99 gems for $9.99 or whatever so i can build a lamp.

I thought Horizon Zero Dawn was great. The narrative unfolds as you progress, dialogue and side quests didn't seem pointless, it has some nice characters. It was a vibrant world you wanted to explore. Building a lore up from nothing and world creation is not an easy feat. This just all seemed seamless and that was down to the writing, top marks.

Yeah I quite like Dishonored, Prey and Horizon's writing.

West of Loathing should've gotten more recognition for its writing.

Personally, horizon zero dawn writing is the strongest among all games released in 2017. The story and the actors portraying the characters that drive the story is fkin amazing

madden longshot had a very cliche story, no matter what ending you came out with it was cliche

@JosephDMcDaniel: Horizon is art

@JosephDMcDaniel: While I agree on madden Horizon Zero Dawn more than deserves to be there. It's writing was absolutely stellar.

Jebus what a fail. No Divinity: Original Sin 2? No Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice? No Wolfenstein 2? You wonder if any members of this so-called "guild" even play video games.

@mdinger: Maybe VanOrd and co weren't in the Writers Guild, so Divinity OS2 can't be considered. That's the only reason I can think of.
