Now Playing: Getting Drunk In Sea Of Thieves Gameplay

Rare's long-anticipated Sea of Thieves is the latest game to receive an extravagant art book. Comic publisher Dark Horse has announced The Art of Sea of Thieves, a beautiful companion tome to the upcoming open-world pirate game.

The Art of Sea of Thieves will give fans "an unprecedented look at the ships, characters, and loot" of the swashbuckling title. The book features "hundreds" of pieces of art, as well as developer commentary that sheds more light on the development of the game and its world. You can take a look at the book's cover below.

Dark Horse hasn't announced a release date for The Art of Sea of Thieves, but the book is slated to arrive in early 2018. It will soon be available for pre-order on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Penguin Random House, and other book retailers.

Sea of Thieves likewise doesn't yet have a release date. The game was originally slated to launch for Xbox One and PC at some point this year, but at E3 2017 Microsoft announced the title would be pushed back into 2018. Rare recently announced the title will allow cross-play between Xbox and PC players. The developer also added 540p and 15 FPS lock options to the PC version.

This isn't the only gaming art book Dark Horse is publishing soon. Later this month, the publisher will release an eight-pound tome titled The Art of Overwatch, which features an extensive collection of artwork for Blizzard's popular shooter. Dark Horse will also publish an enormous Legend of Zelda encyclopedia next April.

i'll pass, the gameplay reminds of perfect dark zero when using a jackal sniper rifle, but the movements seem faster than perfect dark zero.

i don't think many people care about the game, let alone the artbook.

@Raidendude153: true! But I'm sure they have one of their other teams developing the heavy content outside of this alpha experience

The game looks fun but I'm concerned for Rare if people don't support the game in numbers that microsoft want then they'll close down these guys like lionhead.

@gamingdevil800: yea, looks like sea of thieves will bomb hard. it just won't have the appeal or be executed very well for a mainstream market in mind. it scream mediocrity in my opinion.

and you are correct, microsoft will slash dozens of jobs from the rare team after the game releases and puts out abysmal numbers. i mean, can anyone see this game catering to the xbox demographic who primarily enjoys shooters and racing games? i can't. i don't think microsoft will disband rare studios outright, but it will surely take away all creativity and have the team, whatever is left, working on grunt tasks for other first party titles in all likelihood. this is the fault of rare, not microsoft, at the end of the day. the studio chose a very weak concept to put their ideas and resources behind.

@gamingdevil800: or just relegate em to the background for another decade.......

honestly what happened after Perfect Dark Zero they kinds brought on themselves as well as MS's bad business ethics....

they made Grabbed by The Ghoulies, Kameo & Conker Reloaded before making Perfect Dark Zero, Conker shouyld have been a massive hit but instead they censored it then never bothered addressing the cheaters and hackers in MP [a MS/XBL issue until around the end of X360 and even now you still hear a few stories now and again about cheaters/hackers ruining games]

but Ghoulies & Kameo were kiddie games or did not appeal to the XBOX crowd, conker would have appealed had it not been censored then there's PDZ a rush job to meet the 360's launch and sadly it was the best shooter at launch but still wasn't that good...when other games started coming in shortly after that and bested PDZ the game faded into the background...

the team wanted to redeem themselves but the committee that MS is there was nobody to speak for Perfect Dark and the then CEO got nearly violent in turning Rare down and I think it was their persistence that earned em a seat on the sidelines...cus after initially being turned down they worked on prototypes and systems on their own and when they showed what they had they totally got sidelined....not a thing a reasonable company head would do, at that point you'd thing the moron would be lie well keep going and show me what you got in a month? but instead MS was like NO, shut it down!

this Sea of Thieves looks about as meh as Grabbed by The Ghoulies looked way back when, also if you've been paying attention to the game IDK how you're interested, game seems to have no direction, it's online only but not a MMO really so it's another shared universe disaster waiting to happen or another loot grind in which case frack both options....what's so good about this??

even the art style is yawn.....it's like hey, WOW called they want their art back lolz

it's sad that the devs who gave us Goldeneye 64 and perfect Dark, DKC, Conker etc also gave us such crap games and seriously how did they not see what Free Radical was doing with Timesplitters and not try to make that kind of game with PDZ? they tried to make Halo in Perfect Dark and failed...again I think that's MS mismanagement.....

@MJ12-Conspiracy: I thought CoD2 was the best 360 launch shooter personally

@MJ12-Conspiracy: Have you PLAYED Sea of Thieves? I have, and there's nothing else like it. It's absolutely a squad-based MMO, but with smaller worlds (like PUBG or Fortnite BR, but where the teams have a lot more options of how they want to play).

It's excellent fun, and the mechanisms Rare developed effortlessly push new players to work together toward success. Again, there's nothing else like this game.

Anything other than PLAYING it is just pure speculation.

@Pyrosa: What is going to turn people away from this game is that players can kill and take from each other. imagine spending 8 hrs accumulating loot for some azzhole to come and kill you and take it. There is a demographic of players that will like that challenge. But casuals will not.

Avatar image for spartanx169x
spartanx169x

@7tizz: Where in my comment did I describe casuals as bumbling idiots? I'll save you the trouble. I didn't. But I've played enough games to have a good idea of what kind of game casuals like. They like easy to learn, low stress games. Look at COD and Overwatch. Both of these are exactly that. no teamwork needed to have fun. just jump in and play. Does teamwork help? Of course it does, but its not needed to have fun. Now lets look at Lawbreakers. That game was completely designed for the hardcore player. Lots of game mechanics in essence lot more complicated to learn and be decent at compared to OW and COD. COD and OW very successful. Lawbreakers is all but a complete failure. Want another example? Look at Battleborn with its MOBA game mechanics. Another one thats a complete failure. Its too compliciated compared to other games. Its not that casuals are stupid and can't learn. They simply don't want to take the time to learn. whether its because they don't have the time or simply don't want to the results are the same. Casuals like low stress games. Sea of theives is not going to be one of those games. The same is true for PUBG. PUBG is not going to have the success it has had on PC because its two completely different demographic of players. PC players-Hardcore. Console players- Casual. PUBG may indeed get a lot of sales, but after people realize that only 1 out of 100 is going to win the game players will drop off playing very quickly. Only the best of the best will win in that game which again means hardcore players not casuals. If they can't win at least some of the time, they will not continue to play. If you think otherwise you are in for a rude awakening. If I'm wrong, I will personally look for you on here in a year and tell you so. I do hope both SofT and PUBG both do well for the sake of Xbox. but if they don't it will come as no surprise.

Avatar image for spartanx169x
spartanx169x

@7tizz: For you to be an adult you sure have reading comprehension problems. I had two points. Casuals generally do not go for complicated games and secondly they don't go for high stress games. But hardcore players actually like complicated games and high stress games. Overwatch is neither hence its popularity, its easy and low stress. I never said that SoT or PUBG were complicated. I said they were high stress. PUBG is most certainly that. With SoT , I may be wrong on that one but if people can steal you stuff thats high stress.

@spartanx169x: You don't spend 8 hours getting loot, you spend like 30 minutes getting a chest then cash em in. If you spend 8 hours collection chest and get robbed its on you lol

Avatar image for spartanx169x
spartanx169x

@freeryu: I was just using that as an example. the point being the player will work to get loot only to have it stolen sucks and that type of gameplay will not go over well with casual players. It will be great for competitive type players but not the larger demographic of casuals. I'm avoiding it for that very reason. I have avoided Ark Survival for the exact same reason. If there is something I'm misinformed about please tell me. I don't want to be in a constant Battle Royale. That is simply not fun.

Avatar image for freeryu

@spartanx169x: Oh yeah casuals aren't gonna be interested.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy

@Pyrosa: I thought it was going to be one huge world where you might encounter other players? So you just get matched with teams on a specific map and groups of players will never come and go?

Avatar image for Pyrosa

@girlusocrazy: Multiple teams per map. Some hunt for treasure, some hunt for others, and some wander around and play music. Different each time.

Avatar image for spartanx169x
spartanx169x

@girlusocrazy: from what I have seen in the demo. It will be a constant threat of other players taking your stuff. Anybody that thinks casuals will enjoy that are in for a rude surprise.

Avatar image for Pyrosa

@spartanx169x: Thus far, it's been pretty equally matched. Haven't lost my whole team to raiding pirates yet... But over time they'll likely get better. Headset is crucial.

Avatar image for muppetbabymastr
muppetbabymastr

@Pyrosa: headset is crucial makes it a no go for me. Since the average gamer is in their early 30s like me I think many will agree. I had no problem yelling into a headset in college but my kids are sleeping and no game is worth dealing with that. I guess I could hide in the basement but for me I'll just avoid the concept all together.
