Battlefield: Bad Company 3 will happen, says DICE

"The Bad Company [team] isn't forgotten, they are just on a very long vacation," says DICE creative director.

A third title in the Battlefield: Bad Company series will happen, DICE creative director Lars Gustavsson has said.

No Caption Provided

"My feeling is that I would love to do it. For me, when we started the company with 1942, it was really a work of passion," said Gustavsson at a press event reported by Polygon.

"And then we worked our way through the era of different wars, and I loved them all, like my little babies. When it came to Bad Company, it was creative freedom; don't take yourself too seriously."

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was released in 2010 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, following the 2008 original in the offshoot series. The games cast players as Private Preston Marlowe, and featured a comedic cast of supporting characters in Private Terrence Sweetwater, George Gordon Haggard Jr., and squad leader Sergeant Samuel D. Redford.

"So I love it. I want to see it again," continued Gustavsson, "whether it can happen [right] now with the newly announced Mirrors Edge 2 and Star Wars: Battlefront… but we'll see."

EA's E3 2013 press conference in June unveiled both Mirror's Edge 2 and Star Wars: Battlefront, with both next-gen titles in development at DICE alongside the upcoming Battlefield 4. EA later said that it plans to rotate between Battlefield, Titanfall, and Star Wars: Battlefront as the publisher's main annual shooter.

EA has previously said that Bad Company 3 is not in active development at present.

"But trust me, the Bad Company [team] isn't forgotten, they are just on a very long vacation," he continued," concluded Gustavsson. "They are out there, they're coming back."

As a console gamer, I found BC2 superior to BF3. I couldn't get into BF3 just because how much of a mess it was in terms of glitchiness and random graphical bugs littering it on the console version.

The BAD COMPANY series and BF1943 are the only reason to play DICE games at this point. Technically, BF3, 4 are amazing, but they're ridiculously juvenile shooters with no tactical authenticity that are becoming more like large scale COD every iteration. BC2 at least had a slower and more deliberate pace that allowed for strategy; BC2 is fun... BF3 and BF4 are not.

The BF4 Beta feels much better then BF3, they improved the interface and made the combat much tighter. BC2 is still one of my favorite shooters in recent years.

@Vegamyster Yeah, I've been playing the BF4 beta. It's mildly better gameplay than BF3 IMHO... but fraught with many glitches and freezes just like BF3. Hate to say this... but I just watched the COD:GHOSTS trailer and saw they implemented peeking, sliding (all things I loved from MOH), and an advanced system for enemy and ally MP bots. I never thought I'd ever want to play another COD game since it left WWII, but GHOSTS might change my mind...?

@M3o5nster IMO I can understand and acknowledge the intention behind MOH 2010 and Warfighter, but the big problem there is called "EA milking disease", which destroys all good series we have or could have ! MOH could be the new-gen of that game Black ( From PS2 ) which brought to us that immersion and feeling about weapons that no other game had at the time! But instead, they tried to steal COD players to the game, and that's how you indentify the symptoms of the disease !

@epicgameresearc @Vegamyster MOH Warfighter really had some good elements that got swept under the rug. I see Activision was paying attention... The COD well ran dry long ago.

@epicgameresearc @Vegamyster First person shooters should be dominated by first person shooting, not an endless rain of death from AI controlled killstreak nonsense, which is exactly what CoD is.

Bad Company 2 was easily my favorite online shooter for a while. I've grown tired of military shooters though, but another Bad Company game might bring me back for a little while.

@SoNin360 BAD COMPANY 2: VIETNAM is still one of the most atmospheric shooters ever IMHO -- best work out of DICE. Still play that regularly.

Bad Company is crap. I don't know why people defend it. No prone is unacceptable. Not only do they give machine guns to the inappropriate class, they leave the deployed bipod on the gun model! Also the WWII scalar weapon story is stupid. As WWIII has already broken out EMP attacks can be already be created via high altitude nuclear detonations. Why did the Russians need a non-nuclear way of creating blackouts?

@wuushew Given I've only played Battlefield 3 from the BF series, I'd have to say I've enjoyed the Bad Company games (mainly the second one) more.

@wuushew @SoNin360 Yes. For its limitations, the atmosphere, pacing, and maps are much better in BC1&2 than BF3&4. BC doesn't have all of the technical enhancements of FB2&3, but it's a much more fun gaming experience than recent BF.

As long as it's not a reskin of the Battlefield series. I thought the BC series just felt different than the BF series (in a good way), but then BF3 came out and was almost like a BC wannabe.

@daabulls23 This is DICE. Of course it's going to be a reskin of the Battlefield series. That's literally all they have going for them.

BC2 was a blast. Too bad people don't play it anymore. I would still be playing it. I could not get into BF3. That game should just stick to PC.

@bighorse83 BF3's major issue for me was that they actually toned down a lot of the destruction, which was arguably the most interesting aspect of its immediate predecessors. Bad Company and its sequel were great primarily because you felt like you had so much freedom in multiplayer, and if they do indeed return to that series, I hope they allow even more in terms of environmental destruction.

@ThePowerOfHAT @bighorse83 Just played a couple of days on BF4 beta. Only one building can be brought down, but it always falls the same way and leaves the exact same rubble trails -- scripted. First time I saw it and ran through the rubble was great. Next time it was kinda lame. After two days it was boring. Having rubble trails you must traverse that are exactly the same really makes the experience boring. Oh how i miss BC2. That was much more fun than BF3&4

they should simply make "Battlefront- Bad Company". with Preston, Haggard, Sweetwater and Redford being in the rebels B company where all the galactic misfits go fight as fodder against the Stormtroopers.

I loved Bad Company 3 but I need a change of setting from the modern military scene. Do a 1942 sequel or a 2142 sequal

@AdderD Agreed. Don't get me wrong I'm actually looking forward to BF4 but what I think the franchise really needs for it's next sequel is a different era. Another 2142 would definitely be my first choice, I can't even imagine how awesome that would be on Frostbite.

I can't be the only one who wants a Battlefield 1944 or Korea or Afghanistan ('79-'89) or something else instead of another Modern Military Shooter, they're just not fun anymore.

@GuyFromLatvia you do realize that 90% of the miltary hardware used today was used in the 79-89 war.

Half our planes are from the 70's and 80's. The m-16 rifle even older. Our halftracks, and trucks, etc etc. Even ethe f16 and f15.

@inaka_rob My main point here is that we need a new setting, because the modern setting is horribly overused. We need something new. The number of games set in Cold war conflicts/WW2 are so small compared to hundreds of games about the modern military where you play as an American great crusader that kills russians to save the world from a nuclear war.
