Now Playing: Battlefield 5 Has No Loot Boxes - GS News Update

[UPDATE] A tweet from the Battlefield account confirms that Battlefield V has "no loot boxes." And as we previously reported, the game won't have a Premium Pass, which means "all players have access to the same maps and modes."

The original story is below.

Back in March, there were reports that the new Battlefield game would feature loot boxes in some capacity. As it turns out, that won't be the case. A representative for Battlefield V publisher Electronic Arts told Kotaku, "I can confirm that there are no loot boxes."

The rumor was that Battlefield V's loot boxes would contain only cosmetic items, but the statement makes it sound like there will be no loot boxes whatsoever. The last big Battlefield game, 2016's Battlefield 1, featured loot boxes, as a lot of games today do.

No Caption Provided

This confirmation that Battlefield V won't have loot boxes comes after the uproar over how loot boxes factored into Star Wars: Battlefront II--which was made by DICE, the same team behind Battlefield V. Battlefront II's loot boxes feature items that can actually affect gameplay, so some thought the game became pay-to-win in some capacity.

Now we know that Battlefield V will have no loot boxes at all, and that is good news for some. The game will still have currency that you can buy with real money, though you can only buy cosmetic customisation items, not anything that actually affects gameplay, it seems. What's more, Battlefield V does away with the franchise's Season Pass in favour of giving maps to all players for free.

The move away from loot boxes from EA comes as loot boxes face increased scrutiny around the world from industry groups and lawmakers. Some argue that loot boxes constitute a form of gambling because people pay real money for the chance to get an item they are after. Additionally, many games do not disclose loot box odds, though some do.

Battlefield V launches for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Origin on October 19. It will be available in both standard and Deluxe editions; those who purchase the latter will get access to the game three days early, on October 16.

Additionally, EA/Origin Access subscribers can start playing a trial on October 11, which is notable because that is one day before Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 launches on October 12. Prior to its release, EA will also hold an open beta for Battlefield V later this year.

Yes, it doesn't have "Loot Boxes". It has "AirLifts", that's totally different. https://i.redditmedia.com/02Bf6JKEl9daQg2IAtWHg5IaNJ4ai0xiYpQ68ggZviQ.jpg?fit=crop&crop=faces%2Centropy&arh=2&w=960&s=a5dd043d88502157f4b2f0ffc1a1772f

yeah but now they are going to put just about every single cosmetic item behind a paywall or a grind. Micro-transactions are never okay in a $60+ game.

Wow an $80 game with no loot boxes and free dlc?? What year are we in again? This seems like a solid move on EA's part.

Free dlc and no loot boxes shocked me but it makes sense that EA is trying to get in the public’s good graces again. I still don’t trust them but this is a step in the right direction.

Well this is completely from the point of view of a non fanboy of either BF or CoD. I just play them casually for their unique gameplay styles.

I dont get whats up with all the hate for this game. I agree the trailer looks pretty bad considering the quality trailers they published for previous entries, especially BF3. As it seems EA is trying to make money out of in-game cosmetic items, it still does not bother me. As far as I am concerned if the base game does not have any of those & it feels authentic WW2, I would still buy it. I know I am not going to spend my $$ on silly cosmetics.

BTW no matter how bad the trailer is, the graphics and gameplay looks litt. So people who have money only for the base game, rejoice as you will be able to get good WW2 experience, hopefully. And people who have lot of money to buy in-game stuff, well to each our own i guess.

Also I hate Cod for taking away SP. No matter how bad IW was, its SP was good and worth giving a try.

Hopefully this post helps someone out there. :)

Can't wait to be on the battlefield of WWII with players that customize their soldiers to look like bright, mismatched Guardians from Destiny. Goodbye to any semblance of immersion from Battlefield.

This feels like I will play it when I get bored after it reaches the bargain bin. This MT nonsense makes my wallet happy

The stupid thing is that Gamespot is supporting more consoles in their reviews when primary game platform is PC... please correct yourself next time when putting new article for gamers.

Don't mention PC last as it is last platform and receiving game support by chance ... because if PCs are not here they can't even develop the games... Don't mention next time something like this: "EA drops loot boxes from the upcoming PS4, Xbox One, and PC WW2 shooter." but write it like this: "EA drops loot boxes from the upcoming PC, Xbox One, and PS4 WW2 shooter."

By the way, game looks nice looking forward for open beta.

@GizmoMKD: Bahahahahaa this is the funniest thing I read all day. Do you go around to other websites and complain where they placed the word PC in their articles? Oh god forbid PC is last in the sentence. END OF TIMES IS AMONG US!! PC GAMERS UNITE AND STAND STRONG #PCisNotLast

Please get yourself a better hobby, this is coming from a guy who only played BF games on PC.

@Mogan: He is a pc gamer. It's what they do. They have to constantly tell themselves they are better than everyone. Which is ironic. On PC, games like battlefield and Cod die quickly in numbers online. Battlefield number of players on ps4 beat out pc and xbox combined constantly. But sure, Pc is the better platform. *rolls eyes*

Avatar image for Smosh150

@129260: It is most certainly not what they do. Even compared to other trolling attempts this one surprises me.

Just like anything else, you get more exposure to the bad than the good as most of the time the ones that make all PC gamers look bad are the vocal ones. I wouldn't take everyone who says so as actually meaning it anyway, for some it is just an easy trolling form that will most likely rile people up.

@129260: I'M a PC gamer (predominately) and he's making us look bad. : \

I haven't played Battlefield in a while, but I always played the older ones on PC and their communities were healthy for years. I think CoD suffers because it's sold on so many different PC platforms that don't necessarily play with each other. Though I want to say BO4 is going to be Battle.net only, so that might help things.

See the positives people, pat on the back for EA whether they were shamefully willed into removing MT's or it was their decision, the right one for the frustrated gamers around the world!

Lets hope the game isn't a pile of wank now!!

Avatar image for The_Dragon_Born

@itchyflop: I could be wrong but I think they left the MT in. They just removed loot boxes

Avatar image for itchyflop

@The_Dragon_Born: cool, at least there's choice whether to use them or not and not random "gear", doesn't remove the "noob" factor or levelling up but hey who doesn't like a challenge!!

thanks man :)

People complain about EA but almost every company does the same thing. The lootboxes in battlefront 2 were not game breaking at all. I've never spent a dime and I've unlocked just about everything I would ever use in the game. The problem isn't developers, gamers are the problem. Don't like having to work for XP? Don't play most games lol. A good RPG or Online multiplayer should have a bit of a grind. So what if I can buy everything I can unlock in the game? That only translates to the fact I can unlock everything I can buy. That means that no content is ever locked behind a pay wall of any kind. I've never spent a dime on micro transactions and I've never played a game where I felt compelled to. People will complain about anything. I don't support games that are online only but I'm not boycotting the developers lol. Just chill people.

Avatar image for itchyflop

@getshwifty94: i havent played star wars BF2 so cant comment, i was going to buy it for £5 and still may, how do the loot box's work in that? iv heard you have to wade through random cards not knowing what your going to get, would i be right in thinking this? Surely this makes the game a drag and touching on what you've said doses hinder game play.

Im not talking about buying loot box's, like your good self iv never bought any and totally share your views on the situation.

I probably will still get it for the collection, any wisdom would be greatly appreciated from you. thanks :)

EDIT : lol i know its nothing to do with BFV, im just curious with the EA controversy etc

Micro transactions still not = a full game; if I cannot unlock all items in-game.

Avatar image for Baconstrip78
Baconstrip78

@Gomtor: Game prices have not gone up with inflation in 30 years even though games have become trmendously more expensive to make.

MTs keep games artificially low priced. You should support them because the alternative is games like GTA and BF that cost $100 out of the box.

Yeah, call me when it goes back to being Battlefield, instead of this alt-history/callofdoody mashup.

Avatar image for jach

@Chizaqui: So never?? Only 4 of the games fits: 1942+43, Vietnam and BF2.

Avatar image for Mogan
Mogan

@jach: BF2 isn't based on a historical conflict either; they ginned up a US vs China vs Improbable Middle East Coalition fight for that game. But I guess BF1 would be.

Avatar image for Chizaqui
Chizaqui

@jach: except that 3 and 4 were modern war fiction? I like a lot of the video... but the themes would have fit a lot better in bad company 3, not to mention the game is feeling more arcadey with each iteration (thinking of the random kit drops in One.)

Avatar image for Mogan
Mogan

@Chizaqui: I mean, what if they'd said this was Bad Company WW2? Would we all still be *****ing up a storm about alternative history and SJW agendas?

Avatar image for jach
Jach

@Chizaqui: 2042, Heroes, BF1+3+4 and Hardline (kind of) fits into the "alt-history/callofdoody mashup" criteria.

But I think I get your point. I remember playing Battlefield for the first time and the name made sense with the big maps and a lot of action going around. After BF2, it no longer feels like that to me. The best one since is Hardline (haven't tried BF1 yet), since it offers something different, they just didn't work on it enough. The worst being BF4, as it was really a very incremental update of BF3, not to mention the worst release in the whole series' history.

I love how people get in an uproar over loot boxes yet when overwatch did it no one seemed to care. Only sell cosmetics i couldn't care less.

I guess the Blizztards will eat up anything that company does.

Avatar image for jach
Jach

@oo7superdave: Blizzard can get away with anything really. Even when they did a bad job, they barely got any blowback. Diablo III being the biggest, with both the market issue and the game itself. But nobody ever complained about Overwatch or Hearthstone, the latter being P2W.

Avatar image for Mogan
Mogan

@jach: The outcry over Diablo III's loot balance was pretty big, man. Big enough to get Blizzard to totally rework their loot game's loot system over a year after the fact. Other than that, and the slow, gradual changes to WoW, I don't know that Blizzard has ever really messed up that big. All their games tend to be super popular and successful.

Avatar image for Baconstrip78
Baconstrip78

@jach: There was huge blowback for Diablo 3, which is why Blizzard spent so much effort correcting the mistake and giving away content to draw players back in. Diablo 3 has been one of the biggest comeback stories in gaming and turned into quite the gem.

Avatar image for jach
Jach

@Baconstrip78: Biggest, as I wrote, but I wouldn't call it huge. A lot of people took advantage or didn't care. A lot of companies get a lot more thrown at them for smaller errors.
But support for games has always been Blizzards strength, so of course they would try and fix the game.

Avatar image for aross2004

@oo7superdave: Not pay to win in Overwatch. Obvious is obvious.

Avatar image for getshwifty94
Getshwifty94

@aross2004: If you're referring to Battlefront 2 that's a ridiculous statement and the microtransactions weren't even live long enough to impact progression. I've been playing it since December and I've never spent a dime yet I've unlocked virtually everything I need in the classes I use. Its not exactly like you could ever buy everything in the game in the first place. Injustice 2 had a pay to win structure more than any EA game ever has.

Avatar image for aross2004
