Battlefield 4 shipped with "dirt all over it," says Oddworld creator

Lorne Lanning blasts the AAA game market, saying "F**k that business."

Electronic Arts' multiplayer shooter Battlefield 4 shipped with "dirt all over it," according to Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning, referencing the bugs that marred the game's launch last year. Lanning's comments came as part of an interview with VG247 wherein he blasted the AAA market overall.

"F**k that business. I don't want to play with that business, because it was a losing business," Lanning said. He claimed that AAA game publishers can become beholden to shareholders and as a result, run the risk of building games by the book instead of branching out and trying new things.

"I'd rather not make games than go f**king be a slave for public companies who care more about their shareholders than they do about their customers," he added.

Lanning pointed to the release of Battlefield 4 as an example of publisher executives putting the desires of its shareholders ahead of gamers.

"Why did Battlefield 4 ship? You know that team was crying. You know that team knew that game wasn't ready to go," Lanning said. "You know that team f**king spent a lot of sleepless nights building that sh** out to look as good and play as good, when it was able to be experienced, being played as they were intending it to be played."

No Caption Provided

"Someone made a decision that the shareholders are more important than the customer. And we see a lot of that," he added. "How do you blow that? How do you take that f**king jewel and ship it with dirt all over it?"

It's not just Battlefield 4 that "shipped with dirt all over it," but also predecessor Battlefield 3, according to lead designer David Goldfarb. Writing on Twitter, he said, "So did BF3." Goldfarb has since left EA to join Payday developer Overkill Software.

We've reached out to EA/DICE for a response to Lanning's comments.

Defending Battlefield 4's rocky launch, in February EA chief creative officer Richard Hilleman acknowledged that the game had some issues at release, but said that the product overall has been "exceedingly successful" from both a sales and gameplay perspective. He also brushed aside a question about Battlefield 4 not being tested before release, saying more than 10,000 people beta tested the game.

Lanning is, of course, correct on most points, but damn...the guy could really benefit from some etiquette.

It is one thing to be frank and honest and do so in a respectful manner, and quite another to come off as a simpleton with no better opinion than one of the thousands of anonymous posters on the internet.

But, yeah, I agree...**** that business.

Please don't post whatever BS you get back from EA if they actually respond. It'll just be some nonsense about them pushing "innovation" to new levels, or really caring about the customers feedback and whatever other shit they can spew.

There's a very good reason I've been playing the cheap $15 indi titles a hell of allot more than any AAA title I have purchased over the last year. breaks my heart every time i load up BF4 and feel the "slop" that is it; so flawed and so many things that will never be fixed.

"10k people beta tested it" more like 10k suckers simply preorderd it and they splash a fancy word like "beta" on a tech demo. These guys have no shame; nor access to my wallet.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Hundreds of thousands have been beta testing it for 6 months since release and they still can't fix anything, and just break more stuff every time they try. Just downloaded Naval Strike and the new patch on PS4, but I'm afraid to even try it.

Still not available on XB1, PC has been postponed indefinitely and the forums are a prison riot because it's unplayably laggy on PS4.

I am glad to see he put the actual dev teams thought's into consideration, I cannot imagine releasing so early went over too well with DICE. Then again, when has a DICE release ever NOT been laden with bugs? Their QA control throughout their entire history has been terrible, so I am going to say DICE aren't exactly innocent here and should sort themselves out in that regard. And as a matter of personal opinion, I'm not too fond of how the BF series has progressed, way too many unlocks and stuff, the whole rock-paper-scissors teamwork thing doesn't seem to exist anymore.

All of those things make me terrified for what will happen to Star Wars Battlefront 3 D:

Hopefully BF4 devs are reading this so they can finally fix the f'in game instead of releasing more dlc that probably are also broken. I didn't buy BF4 to just let it collect dust because it's unplayable, I bought it because i would actually want to play it so please EA/Dice fix the damn game

So refreshing that somebodies actually speaking out and telling it how it is for once! EA can talk to us like retards all they want, but we all know exactly what happened.

Also, can't believe i'm seeing idiots defending EA ect.

Go crawl into a hole, your fanboyism is nothing but destructive.

The guy is right. AAA game companies are taking their customers (and their developers) for a ride and laughing all the way to the bank. It will happen again and again because companies don't have to ship a quality product in order to make a profit. They just throw it out there and throw enough patches on it until it looks like Dr. Frankenstein's Monster. It may not be fully functioning but at least IT'S ALIVE!

While I think he's hipoctical for the fact he is "going back to the well" for an HD version of Oddworld and milking the game.

He is completely right though in what he is saying. I'll never touch BF or COD again. A lot of other AAA titles are running the same risk as well with gamers.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Normally, I'd feel the same about HD remakes that are basic upscales with higher resolution textures, but have you even seen footage of New n' Tasty? I couldn't stand to look at the original game at all, but this, this looks like a real-time cinematic in action; I can't stop looking at the lively animations and beautiful scenery. It's much more than a shameless HD cash-in turd port, get informed.

Lanning is such a blowhard. You can always tell when he has a new project coming out, because he starts bad mouthing other companies for the free press. He needs to just shut the f**k up.

@sudarsanvrs you seem to think because I'm saying Lanning needs to shut up that I like Battlefield. I don't. My problem is with with Lorne Lanning and his attitude. He made a couple great games over a decade ago and now thinks he's god's gift to gaming. He acts the way he does because it gets him in the news.

BF4 was NOT Beta tested by anyone. Just like BF3, what supposed testers got was an old demo code used for trade shows. This game was already in the shipping process by the time the 'Beta' was being played. So no, 10,000 downloaded and played a demo level, not a Beta test.

BF2 amazing, BFBC2 great, BF3 meh, BF4 nope. This guy is right. The game was not in a state to be shipped but the company did it to look competitive and meet shareholder demands. As a Battlefield fan since the first game I really do think that money has been the reason the series has suffered. That's my opinion anyway.

You would think happy customers mean more sales means happy shareholders. I now I never invest in a company unless I believe in their product.
