Battlefield 3 not coming to Steam

Electronic Arts' long list of digital retail partners leaves off Valve's online distribution hub.

Last month, rumor had it that DICE's upcoming modern-day shooter Battlefield 3 would skip Valve's digital distribution outlet Steam altogether. Now, publisher Electronic Arts has confirmed that speculation.

Battlefield 3 won't break into Steam.
Battlefield 3 won't break into Steam.

The list of global digital retail partners for Battlefield 3 is extensive, but it does not include Steam--the digital distribution juggernaut with over 30 million users. As of press time, EA had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on the matter.

Battlefield 3 skipping Steam is not an entirely wild scenario. EA recently opened its own digital distribution shop--Origin--and has tussled with Steam lately, pulling Dragon Age II, Crysis 2, and others from Steam.

For more on Battlefield 3, which is due out on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on October 25, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

@scar-hawk So you won't pay full-price for a game based on how it's being delivered to you? Incredible, your logic is flawless.

wow people get over yourselves, bf3 skipping steam in favor of its "home team" service is not the end of the world; as long as origin works. not buying bf3 because you a "loyalist" to steam is sad, its called "games for windows" not "games for steam" not every game has to use steam. step outside of that bubble and enjoy a game regardless of online service.

Why!! Why does EA continually have to disappoint me. Why do all the best game companies keep going to EA for publishing. Pisses me off so much! EA is a greedy Freaking Corporate company that deserves to be destroyed. They screwed over Crysis 2, Warhead, Now this! EA you will not get any profit from me what so ever. I feel sorry for DICE that is going to take a large hit due to EA's greedy marketing tactics. EA is a very wealthy company who would do just fine going through 3rd party distribution techniques. It just needs a new CEO. Whoever made this decision needs to be shot.

Wow, EA is stupid as all heck. I don't even want to hear them whining about used game sales hurting the industry, when they aren't even trying to sell NEW games.

For all the ppl complaining...you do realize that ea and steam are having a conflict with one another and are trying to reach an agreement??? srsly i dont think its because of origin since ea would receive money from steam sales as well...

Well, looks like I will be skipping Battlefield 3 until EA changes their mind. I was hoping as it got closer that they would change their mind, but clearly they aren't interested in making millions of Battlefield players on Steam happy. EA, you are dumb. When all my friends, my games, my communities, and my weekend deals are on Steam, why in the hell would I want to use some other immature service.

LOOOOOOL at everyone hating on EA for doing this and saying "hurr... durr... not gonna buy... EA can't dictate on the way i buy my games.." If you don't want the game, don't buy it. Don't make silly excuses, because, there is allways the stores. You don't need Origin for anything. Gamestop, Best Buy, or whatever stores you guys have in your country. No need to make an all out war on this.

Hello EA anonymous, I'm proud to say that I am now EA free for over a year now and am not encouraged in looking back, especially with recent events. But I hate to admit that all of a sudden Activision is starting to look good.

Stop referring to DICE and EA as if they are separate entities. EA owns DICE, and has for several years now. Despite loving Steam, I was willing to give EA the benefit of the doubt when they started pulling games from Steam. I figured they were both being greedy, both in the wrong. This however is not being greedy, it is being stupid. People aren't just going to magically migrate from Steam just for this game. Steam isn't huge because of it's games catalog, it is huge because it really is the best digital service out there. So all this will amount to is lost sales. Seriously, the entire point of BF3 is to take the market back from Modern Warfare. Congrats EA, you have crippled your ability to do just that in one move.

@dutchgamer83 Because Origin and Steam (if the game was on steam) can't charge the same price because they need too money and the cannot take money from the normal price because it would be irrational for the developers who made the game to cut price just for digital distributors so the digital distributors charge more! And about the DVD , manual , case... Yeah you do not pay for those but it is supposed that with digital distributors you are not supposed to move from your home to Gamestop or whatever to buy the game so while you download the game you can sit back on the couch and play something on consoles and because of this they kinda include the cost for manual and stuff like that! Plus sometimes they include a digital manual! It would be cool if they added a digital case 2 and a virtual game library! :) :P

And from the list of distributors they've tied up with, it looks like they are limiting themselves to US and Europe. That nixes my purchase. Buh-bye BattleField.

That move is a kick to the face to the developers of BF3. So much money goes on spreading that game, but it will not be sold through the most used online store. This isn't a reason not to buy the game from Origin or any other method. We submit our comments here because we want to get this game, not because were economists and we're anticipating obvious drop in EA's sales. This may be a fatal mistake caused by EA, but it won't end steam service. Support the developers and buy this game anyway, after all the biggest portion goes to DICE.

There goes at least a million sales down the drain. What a bunch of idiots, if you're going to be competitive against COD you don't do this.

Its a very bad move from EA. Steam is the biggest digital game distribution. I know EA wants all the money for themselves and come with weak excuses why they are pulling back games from steam. But people are not gonna buy another program just to be able to buy and instal the game they want. What is all publishers are gonna do that, then you end up with 20 programs on your pc just to buy and play your game. I was planning to buy this game in store anyway. Seeing how the store apearantly is cheaper as steam and origin even though they claim digital games suppose to be cheaper cause you no longer pay for the dvd, the case, the instruction manual and labor costs of the store employees. I wonder why BF3 is 45 euro in store then and 50 euro on origin (and if it was on steam on steam aswel for 50 euro).

I hope Origin will be a total failure. Bad for competition, but good for us gamers. If it was DICE who decided not to publish the game on Steam, I would have accepted it. The developer should do whatever they want with their titles. But I don't accept the fact that the publisher (which should do everything it can to sell as many copies as it can for the developer sake), does this to make its own service successful. And Steam is the biggest (and in my view, the best) digital distribution service, I would be angry if I was DICE. And we users don't need EA to be in "direct" contact with us, nor we need them to hold our hands. Thanks EA for nothing, and for making competition obsolete. This is a big disappointment.

You know EA, if you're worried about somebody else taking a cut of your sales, why not just cut off GameStop, Best Buy, Amazon, Target, Direct2Drive, Impulse, Gamersgate, Wal*mart, and Target. Just sell it yourself and keep all the profits.

I think this stuff is all pretty underhanded and backstabbing of EA considering how much money they've made in the past by publishing all of Valves games for consoles.

Their loss. I will never use EA's digital method. If they want more people to buy their boxed items this is a good way of doing it. It costs EA more to sell a boxed version though so not sure what they are trying to do.

EA, greedy punks. If I could give my money directly to DICE, I would. I only use digital distribution, but for EA I'll make an exception, retail it is. Gotta make sure Amazon takes a cut, more expensive for EA. Anybody got any ideas how I can make this purchase even more expensive for EA?
