Battlefield 3 hits 8 million in sales

EA has revealed that the military shooter has sold roughly 3 million more units throughout the month of November.

Last month, the DICE-developed Battlefield 3 became EA's biggest day-one shipment ever, with 10 million units sent to retailers for the game's October 27 launch.

While the game's week-one sales of 5 million units weren't quite enough to best the efforts of Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which sold 6.5 million units in the UK and the US in its first 24 hours on sale, updated sales figures show that Battlefield 3 is continuing to sell well postlaunch.

Battlefield 3 has sold 8 million copies to date.
Battlefield 3 has sold 8 million copies to date.

During an investor presentation today, EA CFO Eric Brown briefly addressed Battlefield 3's current status, revealing that sold-in numbers (games shipped) now stand at 12 million, while sold-through numbers (games sold) currently stand at 8 million units.

The news follows the recent class-action lawsuit filed against EA over the publisher's recent decision to renege on an earlier announcement that the PS3 version of Battlefield 3 would come packed with Battlefield 1943. EA has since announced plans to make good on that promise.

I really want to know how well this game sold on the PC. I just hope that the community was respectful enough to buy it rather than pirate it.

@connor, the physics engine is not much different from the one used in previous bf games... DICE used frostbite 1 for bad comp 2 and now there using frostbite 2.0, which is extremely similar (should be called frostbite 1.1) all it does is guarantee the lights flash in ur eyes ("better" lighting) and allows us to play on extremely huge underpopulated (xbox/ps3) maps

@connor : why don't you explain to me the instantly recognizable changes/upgrades and the "way different" phys engine that would warrant to classify BF3 an "entirely new exp" and then tell me how MW3 isn't a new exp

x_hunter00, if you have played both games then you would immediately recognize the changes/upgrades DICE has implemented. The physics engine in BF3 is way different creating an entirely new experience.

@Sturm_ng Just buy an online pass. I believe they are 10 dollars. I agree with you though, there is no justification for them to try to lock one console to each game.

big maps? usable vehicles? standard modes? destructible environments? All check...the only thing different is the graphics. So basically BF3 = BFBC 2.3, how is this different from the criticisms that MW3 has gotten???

Battlefield 3 is a great game with a great engine for multiplayer. Let's face it. The single player campaign is absolutely horrendous. Feels like they only made one for the fun of it. The only bone I have to pick with EA is that they are forcing people to buy brand new copy in order to enjoy the game online. You can't buy a used copy or rent the game since the online code will not work. On the point of view of a consumer, I believe this is a very bad taste concept since it doesn't leave me the choice of wanting to rent the game for a couple of nights or buy a used copy. Also, it can be a very dangerous door to open since it can lead to a future without the option for consumer to rent a game to play with your buddies online for a few days but, you will need to buy the game brand new to do so. What do you think will happen to the concept of trading your used games in to get credits. Answer. No more trade-in or super reduce trade-in value since the game can only work for single player or split-screen campaign mode.

@ dmarlo3 I can't believe your comment was voted down 14:1. While I wholeheartedly disagree with you, I respect your opinion. I think if you had given BF3 a real chance you would have discovered that it is a far superior game to MW3 - but if you were expecting a CoD type game it never would've been what you were looking for. As for the people that voted his comment down, lighten up. His opinion is as valid as yours. It's not like he came in here a said "BF3 sucks and it's fanboys can suck my left nut" like so many other trolls. He took the time to write exactly what he didn't like about it, and went on to say that he thinks BF3 is a great game, just not for his tastes. I have a lot more respect for someone who offers up their own opinion, however unpopular, than I do for those who categorically shoot it down for not sharing your views.

@Hurvl EA knows. You can tell by their recent moves as a company that they're a lot more focused on delivering quality before quantity. They've re-structured and are re-branding, and they have exclusive rights to the behemoth of an engine that is Frostbite 2. We'll see much better product out of EA in the next couple of years, I'm sure.

It's great that a great, polished, content rich game can become a "biggest day-one shipment ever" for a company as large as EA. Perhaps EA and others will now realize more fully that quality sells (we already know from before that mediocre crap sells).

@jorgeabk Whoaaa, slow down there. No need to get upset. I don't need to hear from fanboys on either side, with you obviously being a BF3 fanboy. I preferred the COD franchise, having played COD4, MW2, BO, and MW3, also BFBC2, and BF3 online. However, MW3 ranks as one of the worst of the bunch in my mind. IW should have never outsourced the online mode. I am glad to see BF3 putting some pressure on COD in sales figures. Competition drives innovation, right?

@dmarlo3 you made the right choice and traded BF3 for MW3........bc real gamers want a real challange, ur probably the typical teenager that enjoys playing arcade games like MW3.....MW3 is so fake in everyway, it doesn't even simulate a girl fight, better yet a war.......so call in ur pave low, with ur killstreaks, it just shows ur inability to make ur own kills on ur own.....but word of advice COD fanboy, the headline is about BF3 sales, it has nothing to do with trading in games of ur liking........LOSER !!!!

The truth is.... neither MW3 nor BF3 were amazing as we all had expected... Yeah... I personally wanted MW3 to be the best COD (as it's likely to be the final part in the MW series) but what I got is something of a lower standard than MW2 in terms of fun and overall quality. But the game isn't bad a such... just not the 'GoTY' quality we had expected seeing as it's one of the biggest releases this year. Likewise, BF3 is also a disappointing game. They could've given us a better product if they weren't so caught up in trying to rival directly with Activision. It's always a bad idea. While it wows graphically (on PC versions), the game isn't that fun - in fact, it's the same concept as BFBC2 (which was a pretty fun game). Either way, the simple solution is - **** both games :) Get MW2 and BFBC2 - the cheaper options which provides you more :D

Nice to see BF3 is still selling a little better than most would have initially expected, hopefully EA will listen to what they are being told by fans of the game and those that have played BF, and for the next game (whether it is BF4 or a new Medal Of Honor title) work a little more on the single player campaign and a couple more multi player maps to give a little more choice in online play, and a better single player experience which was in my opinion sadly ruined by too many inappropriately placed QTE's.

I Bought the game when it came out and traded it in for MW3. In my opinion BF3 was a disaster especially for PS3 and Xbox, graphics looked terrible gameplay was too short and boring, Online was not that bad but i did not like how there were few game modes to chose from compared to MW3. Even though the maps were gigantic it made gameplay even more boring because it was so hard to be in a team fight or even get kill streaks. Just like what other people say "in cod you call an airstrike, in Bf3 you are the airstrike" I found this to be a very idiotic comment because there are only limited amount of aircraft and vehicles to use for the whole team and again the use of the technology was also very boring and in MW3 eveyone can get a airstrike and more. The campaign for Mw3 was amazing it really captured my attention aswell as online with the new games modes(survival, kill comfirmed etc..) I have nothing against Bf3 just that i do not feel the same way as others do.

--Rob-- It's sad that gaming has people like you fueling the fire of a subpar annual release of a game, that has little to no real innovation. Die hard Mw ppl need to start living in the now and stop trying to relive their Mw days, but if they want to spend their hard earned dollars (or their moms) on a game that is nothing but a glorified dlc for the past 3 years thats fine with me. people have bad taste in entertainment, as someone like justin bieber tops the charts. its no different than Mw3.

I do not know why people compare and defend these two games so hard against each other. They are so different in the way each handles multiplayer that it almost feels like a different genre. I see strengths and weaknesses in both games to be honest. Play what you prefer and don't let people sway your opinion... it is your hard earned dollars.

It's nice to see the FPS game of the year is doing so well :) . Anyways, I'm glad that it's selling well, we all knew it would. And now that BF is becoming a formidable opponent, maybe COD will up their game to keep up. I'd like to see COD return to the glory days of COD1. BF3 is just amazing and will be for years to come. Well up until the next BF game... ;)

@Adenosine What you fail to recognize is that the pirated version of Battlefield can only play the single player campaign, they can't play multiplayer which is Battlefield's main attraction. This is not the case with most games. If they could play multiplayer, I have no doubt Battlefield sales would've been alot lower, sadly.

I wonder what COD has right now? Anyway BF3 is better than all the COD games besides COD1 which is equal. Not that COD is absolute crap it is just stale. Good arcade shooter, bad thinker's shooter. I like using my head. Let's see which corner makes this building fall on their head? :P

@Elnath10 huh? I just dont see how more sales equals "owned" that is all I am saying. I know full and well that MW3 sold more. no battlefield fanboy like myself ever thought BF would EVER outsell COD. I just dont see why call me a BF fanboy when you are in a BF article posting about how COD OWNED BF. you are the one who came here and acted like a fanboy. and I do not see how a sale equals "owned" wii sports, pokenman black and silver, and angry birds OWNED cod!!! but you dont see anyway posting that in a COD message string or forum. so what is there to accept. you have come to a BF article to troll!

This is one of the most pirated games around this quarter and they still manage to sell millions! If a game is good or fun, people will still buy it. If a game is crap, its status will just remain "pirated but never bought due to low fun factor and replayability". Maybe someone should send this news to Ubisoft... :P

I really wish people would stop comparing this game to MW3. Sure, they are both major FPS releases but the two games themselves aren't comparable. BF3 is a strategic, realistic team based FPS with a large influence on vehicles while MW3 is more of a Run And Gun FPS that doesn't require teamwork and is influenced by perks and pointstreaks.

Nice. Still, if they combined BF 3's graphics and sound with MW 3's tight and addictive gameplay, it would make for the ultimate FPS. One can dream.
