The first substantive report on a Battlefield 1942 expansion came from a surprising source, as EBGames.com today put up a product page with bullet-point details on the expansion, as well as screenshots. According to EBGames, the expansion is called Battlefield 1942: A Road to Rome, and it will be released at the end of January.

The expansion will add new multiplayer content, including six maps that focus on the WWII campaigns in Italy. The maps will cover historical engagements like Operation Husky in Sicily and the battles for Anzio and Monte Cassino. Also on the list of additions are three weapons, eight vehicles, and two fighting forces: the French legionnaires and the Italians.

An EA representative said that an expansion for Battlefield 1942 hasn't been officially announced, but that the publisher will soon reveal more details on its future plans for the game. We'll have more on the expansion as soon as it becomes available.
