Now Playing: GS News Update: Battlefield 1 Winter Update Details

Ahead of its release tomorrow, DICE has provided details on the contents of Battlefield 1's Winter update.

This update primarily deals with improving progression systems and fixing bugs. DICE outlined many of the key changes during a livestream this afternoon, and it was noted that this was originally going to be a smaller, bug fix-focused patch. In response to fan feedback, it decided to introduce some new features to help ease the wait for the next big update.

Key among these additions is an increase to the maximum class rank from 10 to 50. This is available not just for the base classes, but also the more specialized ones, like Pilot and Tanker, as well as Elite Kits. When you hit certain milestones--ranks 20, 30, 40, and 50--you'll unlock new dog tags and customization options for your kill card. Some of these are pictured in the gallery below.

Ribbons make a comeback in the Winter update. Unlike medals, which you have to specifically choose to work toward, these are all tracked constantly while playing. Performing certain tasks--like securing three kills while on a horse--will reward you with a ribbon and bonus experience. These can be unlocked repeatedly in a single match. There will be 20 in the update, with more coming in future patches.

Those who have rented servers gain a new kick and ban option, as well as a way to enable map voting. With this turned on, players can choose from one of two maps on the victory screen that they want to play next. Unfortunately, this isn't something we'll see on official servers just yet, but DICE suggested that a positive response to the feature could see it added down the line.

A variety of UI, vehicle, and weapon changes are in store as well. These weren't detailed in full, but we know the heavy tank will now show up on the minimap and the cooldown on vehicles' gas abilities is increasing. The Martini-Henry, which was nerfed in a previous update, was deemed to have been hit too hard and is accordingly receiving a small buff to make it more competitive.

Full patch notes will be released tomorrow, February 14, so we'll know a lot more about the specific changes then. The update rolls out on all platforms tomorrow as well, though DICE didn't commit to any specific time for the rollout to begin.

A more substantial content update arrives in March, when Battlefield 1's first expansion launches. They Shall Not Pass adds the French army, new maps, and more.

They still need to work more on team balancing. What is not taken into consideration is a players experience and what class that play most. I've seen quite a few matches where one team has a LOT of new players and they other team will have half as many or a lot less and the blow out match happens. Same for classes. when you see a team with half of them being snipers you know its going to be a blowout match. Because the snipers will not play the objectives and just find spots to camp.

@spartanx169x: My guess is you're playing on console.. I play on both PC and console. Seems like the console crowd is full of people that don't understand how winning a game of conquest even works. This is made evident by the fact that most people are using assault and support classes the entire time. Hardly any medics. Seems like if they can't keep they're fingers glued on the trigger they won't touch that class. And the snipers don't play recon like they're supposed to.

Come over to the PC side. You'll be much happier lol. When I play on console I'm usually carrying the team and screaming at the TV lmao

@Rushaoz: yeah, I play on PS4 mainly because my only BF friend plays on PS4. There continues to be lots of new players. I think there is a lot of COD players that are still learning. I think as time goes on it will get better. I also think they will tweak the matchmaking for better balancing. My main class in Medic. Normally me and my buddy are in the top 5 both in points and kills. I've have also learned that different classes do better on different maps. Some maps cater more to snipers, while some cater more to shotguns/assault, while others cater to medics(mid range combat). But overall I do my best as medic because i can imediately heal from taking a sniper shot and get back in the combat. But to your point when there are a lot of medics, on your team the team will do better. But the flip side is there are times when nobody does anything to take out a tank. Not even as simple as dropping land mines. But in spite of all the stuff most matches are fun.

Side note: I don't play MP on PC simply because I can not compete with the KB &M guys. I can not play with KB & M for physical limitation reasons. Also I've found that the PC crowd in general are much better players than the console crowd. So I play where I can be competitive. the only game on PC I was competitive at was TitanFall. That game I was a master at on every platform. But I have to stick with console for MP. I do some Single player games on PC though.

@spartanx169x: Of course. That's the reason I play on the PS4 as well as PC. Friends are always fun to play with. Also I'm not so sure about the CoD player thing. I'm sure there are, but BF4 created a very bad habit with a lot of gamers that were new to that game. Automatic bullet hose weapons everywhere. And conquest worked differently in that game. Now it's back to classic conquest where kills count against the other teams tickets so capping flags isn't enough.

I'm glad you and your buddy to well. As far as the classes go take it from a BF vet. I've been playing this series for 14 years now; class switching should be situational at all times depending on what's needed to take that next objective. Especially in this game were two or three people are needed to take down a tank.

As far as the PC crowd goes, here's a little secret; the controller works just as it does on console. Aim assist and all :D I use it from time to time when I wanna play on my 4K HDTV instead of on my desk with KB&M. And I usually do pretty damn well and end up with a positive K/D.

@Rushaoz: I feel like the biggest problem I have when my team is losing is when every person in the team seems to get fixated on one objective. My buddy and I constantly run a circuit of capping a flag then moving on. At least when the majority of the team is holding the "hot" flag, this seems to pull the other team away from attacking and forces them to defend. Seems to work 90% of the time

@Rushaoz: Yeah , most AAA games now have controller support. I just know I'm at a disadvantage, even if I might be able to play smarter. I will say though, IF thats a big IF , if EA and or Steam runs a sale for the right price I will get the game. I did that with TitanFall. I will also be picking up BF1 for my XB1 as well as I have friends that play on that platform as well. My ID on PS4, xb1 and PC is all the same as here spartanx169x on ps4 and PC, and spartan x169x on XB1.

Here is my twitter page where i've posted some end game scores-

@spartanx169x: omg spare yourself the headache and skip the XB1 version. I have it as well and suffers from horrendous frame time lag. I can barely kill anything when shit gets hectic.

@spartanx169x: I agree I been on teams where you know who will win based on the rankings

@spartanx169x: I've played one full match online in BF1 since beta (waiting on my best friend to pick it up to play regularly). Not at all disappointed by what I experienced.

However, if what you say is true in most instances, then that's probably a good thing I've not hit it up more often.

So what's the answer? Is it going to have to be like Squad (where you have limited classes to choose from and usually only one sniper on the battlefield)?

- Except this you'd actually earn your rank/class and have to keep a certain quality to qualify for a class? I wouldn't mind that. If it was done well.

@leblnk: I've got 95 hrs in so far. There really aren't that many blow out matches. Maybe 1 in 10. This is playing Conquest and Operations. But when you have a blowout match no matter which side you are on its pretty easy to spot why. I think they will tweak it. Planes can be a problem depending on the map. The city map and the forest maps are the best to play because there are no planes. I complain about the planes because they are the hardest to take out and you get no warning before being killed. but really overall, its been one of the best MP experiences I've ever had. I see myself playing it as long as there are people on the servers. The campaign is really good as well. there is also more content coming.

@spartanx169x: i don't know why but Argon forest is one of my least favorites in the game. Pretty much any map where objectives are laid out in a straight line are the least fun for me. Argon especially makes it near impossible to flank since most flanking routes are narrow death traps.

@GRADERBLADE13: thats funny, because its my favorite. the objectives for the most part are evenly spaced. you don't have to deal with planes or vehicles of any kind and the action is easy to find. Its one of my best maps. Ballroom Blitz is my best map. I went 44k and 19d strictly as medic using no vehicles.

@spartanx169x: Good to know. I believe I played Operations when I last logged on and absolutely loved it. Totally my wheelhouse.

@spartanx169x: Planes aren't a problem if you get a jump on them early in the maps that have the tank hunter class in it. Jump on a horse and head for that point first and grab it as fast as you can. You can take down both the fighter and attack planes with two tank gewehr rounds.

@Rushaoz: Good Advice. Hadn't thought of that.
