Battlefield 1 Starts Strong, as EA Talks Remasters, Teases Action Game and Titanfall's Future

EA had an "excellent quarter" overall, though it ended up posting a $38 million loss.

[UPDATE] During an earnings call that followed the publication of this report, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said the new action game from Assassin's Creed producer Jade Raymond is "three or four years out." This is the "gigantic," Assassin's-Creed-style action game that EA talked about before. It's in development at Motive Studios in Canada.

He also said during the call that EA expects new-generation console sales--PS4 and Xbox One--to amount to around 80 million units by the end of 2016 and 100 million by the end of 2017. Jorgensen also called out the install bases for the new consoles is 33 percent higher than where the Xbox 360/PS3 generation was 35 months after launch in the west, which bodes well for the industry overall, he said.

Additionally, Jorgensen teased that more Titanfall games are coming. He said EA expects to work with Respawn on more Titanfall games for "many years to come." Jorgensen said that overall, Titanfall is a "huge opportunity" for EA going forward.

This is no surprise, as Respawn boss Vince Zampella previously said more Titanfall games could come after Titanfall 2.

Finally, EA CEO Andrew Wilson again responded to the possibility of EA releasing remasters. He said EA is always looking at what it could do, but wants to make sure that if it does a remaster, that it feels meaningful. He boasted that EA has a portfolio of games that is "rich and deep" and that he's already heard lots of feedback from fans about remasters.

EA's Peter Moore previously said remasters are "easy money," but EA didn't want to do them because it would rather look to the future.

The original story is below.

Electronic Arts today reported sales for the three-month quarter running July-September, providing some insight into how the company is doing from a business perspective.

CEO Andrew Wilson said it was an "excellent quarter," with sales buoyed by the high-profile launch of Battlefield 1. The game's total player base after its first week was "nearly double" that of Battlefield 4's during its launch week, EA said, noting that Battlefield 1's player numbers continue to grow. Bear in mind that EA/Origin Access subscribers can play a trial of the game for free. The subscription service debuted in 2014, while Battlefield 4 came out in 2013. EA only said Battlefield 1's first-week player figure was almost double Battlefield 4's; no actual sales numbers were provided.

No Caption Provided

EA did not say how Titanfall 2 has performed, though it's less than a week old, having launched on October 28. An analyst said the game would be "substantially disappointing" in terms of sales, due in part to the fact that it launched between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Additionally, FIFA 17, after its first week, had 20 percent more "engaged" players compared to the first week of FIFA 16. Additionally, almost two thirds of FIFA 17 players tried the game's new Journey story mode. Another bright spot for EA in the quarter were the Ultimate Team modes for FIFA, Madden, and NHL games, which saw their collective net sales rise 15 percent.

In terms of financials, net revenue was $898 million for the quarter; 63 percent, or $566 million, came from digital channels. EA posted a loss of $38 million for the quarter, which is better than the $140 million loss that the company booked during the same quarter last year.

EA will hold an earnings call at 2 PM PT / 5 PM ET today to discuss these results and answer analyst's questions. We'll report back if anything noteworthy is discussed.

Battlefield 1 completely pissed all over COD, that's for sure. I was really shocked at how low res teh textures and everything are on Infinite warfare, even COD 4 remastered looked better than Infinite Warfare, by a huge margin.

"Starting strong"?

not from my screen. I hate to say it but Destiny and The Division was all I saw for months with people on my friends list (145ppl) and their friends list (people I don't know) from feedback. I see maybe 4-5 people playing BF1 on any given night. Kinda disappointing. And I've yet to hear anyone talk in my random squads...so pretty much everyone is going silent and solo

Pffft! 38 million dollars is nothing (disregarding the fact that I will never come close to owning, or losing, that much money).

Perhaps EA wants to do a "gigantic, Assassin's-Creed-style action game", but it seems like they're already treating Titanfall like the AC franchise, letting us know that there will be plenty of new Titanfall games. Hopefully, they'll not (Titan)fall to the temptation of milking it like Ubisoft has done with the AC series.

Titanfall 2 is incredible. I can't say enough good things about it. Everything right in a shooter is TF 2.

Battlefield Vietnam and Bad Company 3 NOW!!!!! TF2 is an amazing game and everyone should check it out. I would love to see TF use the Frostbite engine considering the TF engine is starting to look dated. Great gameplay but CODesque graphics.

I would love to see a remaster of the Old WW2 Medal of Honor Games.. Not just a remaster, but an upgrate. Get the same baseline story with the Battlefield engine and enemy AI... That would be awesome.

A good remastering of the Dead Space trilogy would be an easy pick-up for me (especially with Pro and Scorpio enhancements). It would be a good way to promote a Dead Space 4 as well.

@ticklemepink: Is Dead Space 4 happening then? I thought after the disappointing sales of Dead Space 3, the franchise's future was in limbo.

Battlefield 1 has potential, but FFS, DICE, FIX the DAMN hitboxes! Use some kinda lag compensation. Models on screen obviously are not where we visually see them, since bullets don't register shots at distance that don't require leading.

I'd also love to see a death replay from the POV of the killer and a stat log showing the weapon and how much damage it did. I've seen too many 1907 sweeper's doing 1-shot kills to know that it's simply not a possibility to kill someone with full health. Easy to see a cheat whose reticule just snaps to the player model.

EA for the love of god, if you do remasters make Burnout 3 and Revenge the first one's to do. Because you aren't doing jack fucking shit about looking into its "future" clearly at this point, and i'm pretty sure everyone has forgotten about Critereon's 'spiritual successor' that we haven't heard a damn thing about in a long, long time now.

Titanfall won't continue. The shooter market is too crowded, and it's a bit player between Call of Duty and Battlefield. The development costs outweigh the small margins that series has. Respawn will move to other projects or be closed.

@mi_hung_lo: I have played it on both pc and x1, and I didn't like it as much as Call of Duty or Battlefield. I dislike the small player count for the big maps, and hate the useless enemy bot characters that are there just to make it look more full. I also dislike how short matches are. The wall walking was the only enjoyable thing about it.

@calstatebadboy: Its pretty obvious TF2 Launch was not good. What do I base that on? EA bragged about how well BF1 did at launch. While they mentioned absolutely NOTHING about TF2's launch. NOTHING. That means its no where near what they expected. you should also know most fans of TF1 will not be buying TF2. Not to mention TF2 is almost a straight clone of COD. TF2 will be a disappointment as far as sales are concerned. you can count on it. Although I will say, It still might have enough sales for a TF3.

TF2 sales now confirmed not doing well at all.

How is EA running with a loss when they have two shooters that are doing really well.

And FIFA which is doing as well as ever ?

@R4gn4r0k: I'm never going to follow this too closely, but my guess would be the outrageous development and marketing costs of at least 2 AAA titles that have not had time to make up that money in sales yet.

I'm surprised too, though. I always assumed that with such a huge selection of both popular and obscure titles that still sell a little bit each month, that it would provide sort of a buffer to make it hard to lose money.

@remiaw: I'm probably the only one who will say this but I'm pretty disappointed with BF1. I feel like they dumbed down a lot of aspects to cater to a broader audience, it doesn't have anywhere near the depth of 4. Sniping is too easy, none of the vehicles of the few they have are particularly challenging to operate, and I feel like just in general you die super fast compared to 4. That last part wouldn't be so much an issue with me if I didn't think the game becomes a cluster f*** due to the lack of vehicles and it's over saturation of infantry. Try it for yourself to see, this is just my personal opinion. Feels closer to Battlefront than Battlefield.

@syntaxkt: That's a good point I often forget about... The weapons selection so far (Rank 4 Assault and Support, Rank 2 Medic, Rank 1 Scout) seems sparse in comparison to BF4... I'm still getting the hang of the ones I've unlocked, but mostly they are more akin to Attachments than different Weapons... Other weapons will likely appear as DLC... This is only one of a few faults I can find with this game though...
