Now Playing: GS News Update: Battlefield 1 Pitch Was Originally Rejected

Following last month's news that EA Studios boss Patrick Soderlund initially rejected DICE's pitch for Battlefield 1, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said today that there were concerns the company's younger audience didn't even know World War 1 happened.

Speaking at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2016 Global Technology Conference, Jorgensen said there was "some debate" inside of EA about Battlefield 1's setting.

"World War 1, we were worried that many of the younger consumers out there didn't know that there was a World War 2 or Vietnam, so World War 1..." he said.

One of the reasons why Soderlund originally rejected DICE's Battlefield 1 pitch was because he thought trench warfare couldn't be fun. But World War 1 offered much more than that, and once developers presented these ideas to EA, the project got the green light.

"I think what people don't understand about World War 1 is the technology shift that went on during the war," Jorgensen said. "People started the war on horseback and ended the war with airplanes and tanks and battleships and submarines. And that's a huge opportunity for us to be able to do a video game around."

Jorgensen also mentioned that there is a huge geographic opportunity for Battlefield 1's content, since World War 1 took place across all of Europe and northern Africa.

It appears people are indeed interested in a World War 1 Battlefield game. The game's announcement trailer is now the most-liked trailer for anything on YouTube. Jorgensen said this speaks to the "excitement" that exists around the game, even if it might not necessarily be indicative of future sales.

Battlefield 1 launches on October 21, though people with an EA/Origin Access membership or those who pick up the deluxe edition can get in on October 18. Additionally, a beta will be held sometime before launch.

In other news about the game, EA will broadcast a livestream of a 64-player match at E3 2016 as part of the company's EA Play event.

So EA Just admitted that their demographic is kids... for an 18 game. GG EA

@gtajj: Looks to find where EA mentions kids, finds only reference to "younger consumers," which is equally applicable to those in their late teens and early/mid 20s.

"World War 1, we were worried that many of the younger consumers out there didn't know that there was a World War 2 or Vietnam, so World War 1..."

Double checks.

"World War 1, we were worried that many of the younger consumers out there didn't know that there was a World War 2 or Vietnam, so World War 1..."

Runs a browser search to find any reference from an EA exec/rep to "kids." Comes up only with the headlines and what people say in comments.

@zmanbarzel: It's blatantly obvious, you're being pedantic lol. So you think that EA execs are worried that people in their late teens or mid 20s don't know about WW1. If anyone in that age group (or pretty much any) don't know about the World Wars, then I'm not sure they have enough brain cells to even hold a peripheral to play BF1.

"Battlefield 1: EA Was Concerned Kids Didn't Know WW1 Even Happened"

Not just kids but majority of people don't know.

But the real reason is MONEY since it's all time that!

Money = Power = Miser want more and more and ready to destroy World to make more.

Hopefully in less than 1000 years Robots will replace idiots Humans and kill them all !

As an avid Battlefielder this all around worries me. It's sad to see that the younger generations aren't entirely aware of WWI, if at all. I also hate to see all the press BF1 is getting because it means there will be more CoD players playing at releaase. And any time a BF game releases before a CoD game I worry about the mass of CoD players that dilute the experience, because they have no concept of playing as a team or working together to take an objective. Thankfully they eventually leave but it's mind-numbing until that point

And for all the idiots. They aren't saying they're making the game for to entice kids. They're saying that they were worried about current generations not knowing anything about WWI. These same "kids" that play CoD religiously not knowing anything about the first world war and not wanting anything to do with the game.

@Zombrex: In your last paragraph, you generalize "kids" with being "stupid" Call of Duty players. Stop generalizing.

@Zombrex:

A fine example of Battlefield Player superiority complex. Current Battlefield is same solo run & gun with shared player base with COD. If you really want a multiplayer FPS game where teamplay really matters, play Arma or Red Orchestra. Yeah, yeah. I have Arma player superiority Complex

We are in trouble if people forget about World War 1. It was supposed to be the "War to end all Wars" but that didn't happen.

Wow so EA is targeting children for a M rated game. I can't tell you how many times in GTA5 I hear children over the headset. I mean really, what the frack are children doing playing GTA5? The game has tits, sex, and the most profanity I have ever heard in a game.

Avatar image for StaticPenguin

@bluebird08: I don't think it's a matter of targeting children. They just know how consumers work and they know for a fact parents WILL be buying Battlefield for their kids. Just like CoD and every other Battlefield installment.

Also, the rating is just guideline for content. It doesn't mean kids are not allowed to play the games at all. When I used to work for Gamestop, I can't tell you how many times parents used the "well they're going to see it one way or the other" excuse when buying GTA for their kids.

Generally speaking when there's a WW2 that means there was a WW1. I think people can look things up and if people need a game to learn very large moments in history then we all doomed more so than I previously thought.

Its so confusing. So disney is reshooting rogue one so kiddies could watch it but DICE is making WW 1 game with brutal melee combat and biochemical warfare so kids could see how much fun it was. Soooo confusing.

Isnt there an age rating on those battlefield games supposedly preventing kids that havent learnt about ww1 yet from playing it? If so why target those kids when making the game?

Most of your Generation Glee'ers are very very uninformed, they're just mindless PC drones that don't know the basics about anything other than whatever liberal propaganda they're force-fed at school and since schools do such an amazingly poor job of teaching history this is a legit concern.

It just wouldn't be a normal day at Gamespot if some moronic right-winger didn't try to shoehorn in some nonsensical critique on liberals. Nice job. You people never fail to meet my expectations.

@bigrod69: has nothing to do with being liberal at all why do all right wing fascists try to bring up liberals in every online forum no matter what the topic is? I live in the United States I vote Democratic this is a Democracy is it not? Go visit Putin and let me know how you feel after 5 years of living there!

Avatar image for joeschmoe

@dylan35: Being a liberal does not mean you're the only one the believes in democracy.

Anyway, no one can accuse America's poor education system of being run by right wingers, who btw, use twice as much per student than Asia and Europe and yet still end up with poorer results.

Avatar image for bigrod69

@dylan35: Wow, that's really keep kiddo. Anywho when you're actually old enough to vote get back to me, then when you actually have a job and you're funding welfare trash so they can sit around and do nothing, get back to me again.

You're such a disgusting and vile person. You don't know anything about him and yet you feel perfectly okay with assuming he's on welfare, he's too young to vote, and that he doesn't have a job. This is what I understood from this article,

"We the kids at EA were not sure if WW1 happened and we concerned about the project, but once it was confirmed we gave the green light"

Avatar image for autumnvarela
AutumnVarela

I'm sure many kids who haven't reached a point in school where they learn about 20th century history in the west, would be unfamiliar with this war. I don't see why that's insulting.

That's why kids are in school... to learn. I didn't know algebra until I was taught algebra. That's how it works.

Though I would argue the fact people don't know would be more of a reason to make the game, than not to. Telling people stories and history they aren't aware of seems like it should be the ideal.

Avatar image for frostedtaro

EA was pretty much insinuating that kids are dumb as dirt in regards to knowledge about world history. Let's be frank here, statistically that is pretty much true for kids in the U.S. I bet a shocking number of them can't even point out where Germany is.

Avatar image for nintendians

i only think the kids that doesn't know about are the ones whom haven't reach high school and learn history yet.
