Batman: Arkham HD Collection Coming to PS4 and Xbox One This Year - Report

Rocksteady's last-gen Batman games will get visual makeover for new consoles, according to leak.

As rumored, Rocksteady's first two Batman games will be re-released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, it seems. A GameStop employee has sent images of an unannounced "Batman HD Collection" to Eurogamer, suggesting the bundle will include new versions of Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009) and Batman: Arkham City (2011), as well as all DLC for both games. This matches up with the report from March 2015.

No Caption Provided

Batman: Arkham Origins, created outside of Rocksteady by WB Games Montreal, will not be included. Arkham Asylum and Arkham City were originally released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as well as PC.

The new versions of those games included with the rumored Batman HD Collection will have "updated visuals" that have been "optimized" for PS4 and Xbox One, according to the leak.

Eurogamer reports that the Batman HD Collection will go on sale June 10, with preorders opening tomorrow, April 19. If that is indeed the case, an official announcement may be imminent.

GameSpot has contacted Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in an attempt to get more details. We'll report back with anything we hear from the publisher.

The first two Batman Arkham games gained near-unanimous praise from critics. GameSpot's Arkham Asylum review explained: "Everything about this game--the impressive visuals, stirring soundtrack, superb voice acting, fiendish puzzles, hard-hitting combat--feels like it has been lovingly crafted by a development team that's both knowledgeable and passionate about the source material. Miss out on this one and the joke's on you."

Its successor, Arkham City, was also rated highly: "From the speedy exhilaration of soaring high above the streets to the atmospheric thrill of discovering long-forgotten secrets in the tunnels below Gotham, this is an unforgettable adventure that will keep you coming back to the cape and cowl long after you've seen the credits roll."

The latest Batman console game was Batman: Arkham Knight, which came out in June 2015 and has reportedly sold 5 million copies. It was also developed by Rocksteady, and is apparently the last Batman game the UK studio plans to make for the foreseeable future.

Loved Arkham Asylum, was super disappointed in City, and never got to like it in all the time I played it. Played Origins late, but liked it surprisingly. And I thought Knight was really good. Some aspects I arguably liked more than even Asylum. The reason I'd want to get this is to see if I could enjoy City any more. Knight is the only one I got all DLC for (or any DLC for that matter).

I normally stay away from HD remasters but I enjoyed Arkham Asylum a lot and I never actually finished City so I might have to give this a go.

Plus City ran like garbage on my computer. Probably won't pay full price for it but definitely interested in this one.

No origins included? I actually like origins believe it or not. It had an interesting setting and way of telling the story, it may have not been epic but it was still alright.

Why? You could buy Asylum and the GOTY edition of City for 20 dollars and play them on 360 or PS3, if You haven't already. I own both games and 100% them. No way I am going to buy them again just for updated visuals.

@69ingChimpmunks: Most people probably wouldn't buy for that reason, but these HD collections aren't made for people who keep their games and consoles from the previous generation. It's for people like myself. I don't keep consoles from the previous gen(in most cases) and I'm a fan of the series. I would exist perfectly in that market, but I primarily game on PC now, so it doesn't really matter in this case.

Anyways, the entire business of HD collections is just based on how many of us don't own the older consoles and/or games. It's not about the visuals at all. They simply couldn't re-release a game without there being a marketable reason, so they update the visuals and make it into a new product called an "HD Collection". They need a reason to tell people to buy these games again, and "All DLC + HD Visuals" is an extremely cost effective way to do that.

@PS2fweak:

Yeah, They're made for the select few that don't own it and wanna give it a go, I get that. I just doubt they'll see enough sales to warrant it. Personally, It'd have been better if they just released the originals with all the DLC for next to nothing rather than change 40 dollars for "HD" visuals.

Nice to see we're getting Asylum & City upgraded and with the DLCs but "ORIGINS" should be included even if it is just 360 version + DLCs to be able to run in BC mode.

It doesn't matter to me who made "Origins" because someone owns the rights to the game and has the power to make it part of the "collection" and even make some cash from being included in the "collection" imo. Yea, "Origins" was a disaster until a few updates but once it was mostly all fixed, I thought it was awesome too (8/10), even though not as epic as City

@DanteReal69: The PC version is already a remaster version, I played all those games at 1080p and 60fps years ago, and with my GTX 970 I can even play them at 4k if I wished it, its consoles that need these remasters because they are so far behind, I mean ffs 1080p is "new" to you guys lol.

@DanteReal69: Um... That's because the PC versions that released years ago are already the HD versions, in native 1080p, 60FPS, better effects, etc. My 5 year old laptop plays AC in native 1080p, unlike the PS3 version which I can't stand to even look at any more.

No buy without Arkham Origins. It's still called Arkham and should be included in the Arkham HD Collection.

@hmoobpaladin: Rocksteady had no part in Origins.... It's perfectly understandable why it's not included. :/

@Xirtahm: Except the collection is called the Arkham Collection and not the Rocksteady Collection.

Origins (no matter who developed it) is part of the cannon to the series and should be included in the collection.

@littlebitsofgaming: If Rocksteady is the one doing the HD remaster and not WB (which seems the case), it doesn't matter how bad you want Origins in the collection. I'm not saying it shouldn't be in there. I'm simply applying common logic to the reason. Rocksteady had nothing to do with Origins, and if they're in charge of the HD collection, Origins is not theirs to touch.

WB Montreal would have to do the work on upgrading Origins.

Unless Batman Arkham collection comes to the NX ( so I can "allegedly" take it on the go ) no way I'm buying these games again ( maybe under $20 )

Origins is my favorite of the bunch, not sure why people don't like it, it was just like the other ones gameplay-wise, except it had a more cohesive story and was just generally more dramatic like Batman should be. Plus do to it's poor performance on console they really should remaster it. I played it on PC with max settings and 60fps and it was great.

@darksynced: Rocksteady's games, Asylum in particular, struck a certain Metroidvania-esque level of world design. It's part of what makes the games interesting (it's not the repetitive combat!). Origins did not.

@darksynced: While for the most part I agree it had plenty of weakness'.

The world for one thing was horrendously under-designed. One of the key aspects of Rocksteady's arkham games was the amount of detail put into the world whereas origin had the most generic world design. Nothing about it really said gotham or showed any real effort had been put into it.

Also the game in general was obnoxiously buggy at release and WB Montreal at one point openly stated they weren't going to fix any more of the bugs in favor of working on dlc.

I will wait 6 months and pick this up for <$20. A re-release has some value, but not $40.

Asylum and the 2 hours I've played on City were amazing.

But I'd rather wait for the day City goes BC, if it comes.

@xenomorphalien: I don't know that it will come now. WB would rather that you buy the remaster, so they wouldn't green light the BC licensing.

@xenomorphalien: Most likely won't given this release. Backwards compatibility requires license holder approval and if they are trying to sell a remaster then it would be counterproductive to let it be backwards compatible.

@phoenix1289: There are exceptions to that, though. Saints Row IV is now backwards compatible despite there also being an Xbox One port.

What is up with this generation? Too many HD/Defininitive remixes coming and not enough AAA originals. 2 years in and we're still getting gap fillers. Man o man I hope there are a lot of fresh things announced this year. Otherwise I would dare say that PS5 & XBNext are closer than most would have liked....

Great series of games. Just disappointed in publishers/developers this generation and how these "new" consoles have been treated.

@Hvac0120: but what makes you think new consoles (ps5, XBNext) would result in more, new AAA titles? If anything we would have to wait even longer because developers would have to spend more time developing for and learning the new systems.

I think the reason we aren't seeing as many new AAA games often this generation has due to development time and cost of production. A lot of the games we have received thus far have been in development for 2 years or more. This results in less game releases in a year due to games being stuck in development. Plus with the improved graphics developers are making sure that the graphics look great but also perform well which has been a bit of an issue this gen.

I also think people are glossing over the number of titles we have received because there haven't been many games that have been truly "MUST BUY". Even the games that have been praised have had their issues and aren't for everyone. Games like Bloodborne, Witcher 3, MGS V, Dark Souls 3, etc have been critically acclaimed but aren't games for everyone. Last E3 promised some new IPs in the future, Quantum Break being a recent release, so hopefully these new titles will deliver.

I wouldn't say that we have gotten plenty of new games this gen probably about the same amount of new games we got last-gen only difference iss we are also getting a lot of HD remasters along side the new games as well.

@Hvac0120: Because AAA video games take a lot of time and there are less development studios around to make them when compared to a decade ago. They cost a lot more resources as well so publishers/developers don't like to take risks anymore, therefore the careful selection of games we get. So they have to rehash older titles and infest the consumer with DLC's and mictrotransactions to be able to survive.

@Hvac0120: I don't know what you're talking about I certainly can't afford every game that comes out these days. I think if even close to half the games I'm exited for this year deliver 2016 is going to be one of the best years for games period last year was certainly amazing.

@sirdukefillion: This is something I find puzzling. Last year was a good-great year for new triple A titles. Just off my head we got Bloodborne, The Order, MKX, Witcher 3, Arkham Knight, Until Dawn, Halo 5, Fallout 4, Rise of Tomb Raider, Battlefront, Battlefield Hardline, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, COD Black Ops 3, Forza 5 (?), Mad Max, Rock Band 4, Guitar Hero Live, and more. I'm sure I'm missing some (sports titles purposely left out).

Are they all great games? No but that is every year in gaming. There is also a little bit of everything there. Even if you were only interested in half those games there was plenty to play last year.

I can understand an arguement for a lack of new IPs. Even the new ones that released haven't been all that impressive. But in terms of AAA games last year was a return to what most people expect out of game releases within a calender year.

@scottyp360: Exactly and I'd say out of that list many games actually have unique and innovative mechanics. How many publishers have said their game is going to be like Witcher 3? A ton if if you haven't been counting and I don't think people see it yet but 2015 was a year with very defining games because gamers showed how their interests are changing and where they want the market to go I can see it happening right now. Specifically I think it came down to Witcher 3, Fallout 4, The Phantom Pain, Bloodborne, and Until Dawn.
