Batman: Arkham Asylum scores Best Game, Gameplay BAFTAs

Rocksteady's acclaimed Dark Knight action adventure collects top honors at British awards; Uncharted 2 also wins big with four gongs.

The British Academy Video Game Awards celebrated the past 12 months in gaming again this year with a lavish central London awards ceremony. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, which has recently placed an emphasis on games, now holds interactive entertainment as its third arm alongside the more traditional film and television departments.

Batman: Arkham Asylum, which was developed by London-based studio Rocksteady, picked up major awards for Best Game and Gameplay. Rocksteady, which Warner Bros. recently acquired a majority stake in, is coming off a big win at the Game Developers Choice Awards last week, where it upset Uncharted 2: Drake's Fortune in the Best Game Design category.

Speaking of Uncharted 2, Naughty Dog's top-rated action adventure celebrated the biggest haul of the night with four awards. The PlayStation 3 exclusive won the Action, Original Score, Story, and Use of Audio awards. Other top honorees at the event included Mario inventor Shigeru Miyamoto, who won the Fellowship Award. Miyamoto joins Atari founder Nolan Bushnell and Sim City creator Will Wright as an honorary member of the BAFTA fellowship.

Notably, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 picked up a win for the publicly voted Game Award of 2009, but it was an Activision UK representative--and not an Infinity Ward developer--that collected the award. The absence follows on from significant turmoil within Infinity Ward, following the unexpected termination of studio heads Jason West and Vince Zampella. The two are now suing Activision for $36 million in damages.

…but Uncharted 2 walked away with the most wins.

Tonight's awards were presented by comedian Dara O'Briain for the second time and were again held at London's Hilton Metropole Hotel. Each category was voted on by a panel of eight to nine video game professionals, except The Game Award of 2009, which was voted for by the public.

Story Uncharted 2? Ridiculous. AC 2 and BAA had better story.

GAME in the UK is like GAMESTOP in the US

Avatar image for Jim60360

it makes me laugh seeing all these americans knocking the brits when over half the american population stand up and put their hand on their heart every single day to a song that was written by a british guy. batman was an easy choice to make but it isn't going to be so easy to pick the best game for 2010 with the amount of awesome games that are coming out, though my moneys on red dead redemption.

Go Batman and Drake!

I'm happy for Uncharted 2, and for Arkham Asylum. Not really a fan of Batman but that particular game was a great experience. And I agree, what the hell is Modern Warfare 2 doing there? The single-player campaign had some good moments sure, but you could tell they didn't care one bit about it. They just focused on the online play.

I gotta say, when I first heard about AA in '08 I was REALLY skeptical. Thought it would be a cash grab for Batman fans (like me) but I didn't even think about buying it. Then the reviews came out and I played it. Truly an amazing gaming experience overall. Looking forward to the sequel. The bar's set high. Don't disappoint!

I'm very happy for Uncharted 2 and especially Arkham Asylum. However, what the heck is MW2 even doing there as a nomination? MW2 is one of the worst games out now. Online definitely sucks along with the game's multiplayer aspect.

Yeah FIFA 10 won the Bafta Sports award. And Batman Asylum is awesome.

Avatar image for takreem95

@Vintendo_64 Thanks, some people were saying it was Killer Croc. And hey! What was the thumbs down for?

Avatar image for Vintendo_64

Where's Rachet and Clank??? That at least deserved to be nominated.

Avatar image for Vintendo_64

@takreem95 yes, it was

Avatar image for Vintendo_64

@hillboy619 No it didn't. it just got nominated

Avatar image for hillboy619

how does flower keep winning stuff i played it and its the dumbest game ever

Avatar image for Death_Masta187

Good for Batman and friends. Time to buy that game once GOTYE comes out. New category: Best expansion pack sold at full price. WINNER: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

My favourite game of last year, though a tight one. I hope this recognition means that developers will now see more worth in using licenses like Batman than just to make a quick buck off fans.

Batman AA, an amazing piece of interactive art. Love Uncharted 1, so I know 2 was going to be better (Now I need a PS3).

Avatar image for gohoanq

Batman:AA deserves all that greatness and more :D I LOVED that game and I cannot freakin wait for the sequel. I can only hope they improve it more, but I doubt the earth can handle all that greatness without exploding.

Uncharted 2 greatest game ever

Avatar image for blancobo

I cac't dismiss the fact that the British gave the trophy to their own... I played Arkham, and it is freakishly awesome. I have not finished the game since I boughted about a month ago, and have been inmersed in shooters since... but this game is awesome and great... It does surprise me when most if not all other evaluators have agreed that Uncharted was the GOTY... in general... and Arkham was within the top performers... but for the game to be the best... well it is simply a show of how sentimental you can be about your own kind...

Avatar image for Quietpower09

Congratz Batman AA. You deserve the respect and honor to receive some of these awards.

Avatar image for maawal

lol... I still can't believe some people are saying that Batman AA is better than Uncharted 2 ..... DUH ! It's no where close to Uncharted 2... but yeah, Batman AA was a great game... but nothing like UC2 .... it wasn't just a game, it was more than a game to me :)

Avatar image for takreem95

Its bad Assassin's Creed II not winning any award. Ubisoft put alot of effort into it. And by the way, it was Scarecrow in the Batman AA ending, right? I saw those claws of his.

Avatar image for delta3074

good result, my personal GOTY for last year, well deserved

Avatar image for jadefury27

The final boss in uncharted 2 was a pain in the @$$.

Avatar image for mrzero1982pt2

i am glad it won. i enjoy playing it over and over. its a painfully linear, but deep game. uncharted is a great game, but it really isnt overrated, but a juggernaut. if uncharted is a playable movie, arkham aslyum is a playable comic book. that game put batman through hell

Avatar image for Samiiii

Batmans good but I can't force myself to play it again. It has zero replayabilty unlike Uncharted 2 which I've completed 3 times plus the multiplayer which is great. Basically, Batman got the award because everyone who likes Uncharted 2 was busy playing Uncharted 2 whilst people who liked Batman were looking around internet forums for their next game because they'd finished with Batman.

Avatar image for Masoud03

wait wait, if this is for 2009, then WHERE THE HELL IS INFAMOUS FOR BEST STORY AND GAMEPLAY ???

Avatar image for teteringen

I haven't started Batman yet, but all these awards seem very promising. UC2, Infamous and Ratchet and Clank were all great games.

Avatar image for HaloFanBoy17

I think Batman really deserved those awards , lets just hope that Rocksteady can duplicate that success with the next title.

Avatar image for burns112233

Still haven't bought Batman yet. Need to make some money quickly!

Avatar image for TheoleDominion

@solidnike - I disagree Batman had alot more to offer other than the shooting in Uncharted 2.

Avatar image for solidniko

of course they chose batman for being english well its a good game but uc2 still should of got it

Avatar image for TheoleDominion

Kudos to Batman for winning the award, one of the few superhero games done top-notch. Though not as good, the game Wolverine was done well too.

Wow what a load of opinionated rubbish comments. You can't state that one game is better than another as a fact, that's an opinion based judgement call. Plus, you have to look at all the categories for making a decision of game of the year. Single player, multiplayer, originality, longevity, variety, blah blah blah. I'm guessing one of the major deciders in this verdict would have been originality. Whilst UC2, MW2, AC2, L4D2 and Fifa10 are all exceptional games, none of them has the originality that was all thru Arkham Asylum. Like it or not AA took a big name and made a new game with tons of replayability. And I'm certainly not bias on that comment because I didn't actually enjoy playing Arkham Asylum. It's on my pile to go back and try again but I just wasn't a huge fan. @uksoccer77 : L4D2 didn't rate higher than MW2. The nominees that didn't win are in alphabetical order.

Avatar image for uksoccer77

why is left for dead 2 better multiplayer than MW2??

Avatar image for elozl

batman AA is still better than uncharted or COD MW 2

Avatar image for evilcomesback

i was expecting atleast one nominee to be r&c crack in time, forme it was da best game in 2009

Avatar image for MassMayham57_

Well Deserved for Batman:AA it was a great and original game

Avatar image for chucknoddis

well im glad that they saw uncharted 2 was better because thats a fact however batman is still fun but just not as good as uncharted 2

Avatar image for drokmore

Ya this one was just an amazing game that honestly wasnt that hyped compared to some. The gameplay was just so smooth.

Avatar image for funnysplay

Batman deserves it one of the best games last year and my pick for GOTY.

Avatar image for GenericUser12

The fighting system in Batman AA was amazing. I don't know what people are smoking.

Avatar image for chandu83

@Mr_Versipellis: While I am happy that Batman won the award, I cannot believe that Modern Warfare 2 was even nominated. Dragon Age FTW indeed.
