Barbie Coming To Max This Fall

The record-breaking blockbuster will get a long theatrical run, however.

Sometime this fall, prepare to throw on pink sweats and watch Barbie from the comfort of your couch. That's when the Margot Robbie-starring movie will head to the streaming service Max.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav revealed Barbie's launch window on Max during a second-quarter earnings call, according to Deadline. But in the meantime, the record-setting movie for the studio will get a long theatrical run, especially after just earning $93 million domestically in its second weekend.

"We really believe in the motion picture window. Let this movie go to the motion picture window, play it up, build up that brand, then have it go into [premium video on demand]," Zaslav said on the call, per Collider. "... And then put it on Max. And when it goes on Max, we think it'll have a very good impact and that'll be in the fall."

Speaking of the streaming service, Max lost 1.8 million subscribers after being rebranded from HBO Max. But WB Discovery apparently figured there would be attrition, with people choosing to sign up for the cheaper Discovery+ instead.

Meanwhile, Deadline adds that Barbie is expected to cross the $400 million milestone domestically today. That would mean the film based on the iconic doll would hit that threshold in 14 days, which is four days faster than Top Gun: Maverick and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Barbie could also earn over $1 billion worldwide by the end of this weekend.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and The Meg 2 (from WB Discovery) are the new challengers this weekend for Barbie, but neither are expected to come close to dethroning Barbie at the top of the domestic box office. Deadline says estimates put Barbie at hauling in another $55-$60 million over its third weekend.
