Bandai Namco Shuts Down Free-To-Play Fighting Game Rise of Incarnates

Announcement follows news F2P SoulCalibur is also being shut down.

Bandai Namco has issued a notice of service termination for free-to-play fighting game, Rise of Incarnates. In-game currency is no longer available for purchase and the game will become unplayable from December 15, 2015, according to a statement from the publisher.

"We must regretfully inform all users of the closure of Rise of Incarnates," it said on the game's Steam page. "We offer our sincere thanks to everyone who has supported this game . We will be keeping the servers open until December 15, 2015, so please continue to enjoy Rise of Incarnates until the very end."

Rise of Incarnates was announced in August, 2014 and was heavily inspired by titles such as Gundam Extreme Vs. Instead of mechs, however, players selected from super-powered heroes and villains, before facing off against each other in two-versus-two brawls.

The title was designed by SoulCalibur, Tekken and Gundam Extreme veterans, giving the it a fighting game pedigree. Despite this, Rise of Incarnates failed to make a splash or develop a large audience.

Bandai Namco has made numerous efforts to move into the free-to-play genre. In addition to new properties such as Rise of Incarnates, classic gaming franchises such as SoulCalibur and Tekken have been rebuilt with the microtransaction business model in mind.

SoulCalibur: Lost Swords was launched in April 2014 for the PlayStation 3. Recently, Bandai Namco announced the game will shut down in November 2015.

While the company's free-to-play plans seem to be in flux, its upcoming slate of traditional console games includes Dark Souls 3, which is scheduled for release in early 2016, and Pokken Tournament.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a game published by Bandai Namco in Europe, recently received its first major content expansion. In GameSpot's review, The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone earned a 9/10 score.

Just another reason why I don't play multiplayer games, they always have a limited life span. Every one of my single player games I can still play, and 10 years from now I'll still be able to play them. Can't say that about any multiplayer game.

Wow, such a damn shame. Great games like this get canned, when all we ever get these days are rehashed boring sequels (Call of duty, Dark souls.) Oh well, such is life.

@ShamblerQ: A shame? Really? This is what they get for moving to the Free to scam model. They make great fighting games so why not just sell it to me as opposed to me having to pay 10x the price on things I could have earned myself.

well when people can't play your games with all the errors this game had, no wonder.Still I love how the silent majority still hates on F2P games just because of the bad ones. With the logic , I should hate every triple A games because of the crap storm of disappointing games coming out lately.

@Jestersmiles: Its just disappointing to see what they have done with SoulCaliber. Fighting games don't work well with F2P in my opinion.

Maybe now someone at Bandai Namco will realize Free 2 Play fighting games is a bad idea and will not really catch on?

@UrbanMessiah: F2P games are not a bad idea F2P pay to win or pay for advantages is a bad idea. Pay for Cosmetics is fine. The problem is though the Genre that RoI and Gundam Extreme vs follows is a bad game genre it's just fun because people love gundams.

Rather than simply shutting down Rise of Incarnates, I wonder if it would've been more productive to include a guest character to coincide with the PC release of Tales of Zestiria.

I was never really hyped for this game. I hope they announce a new Soul Caliber and the console release date for Tekken 7 and Tekken V Street Fighter. I know it's coming so I'm not in a rush (especially with allllllllll of the great games being released between now and fall of 2016), but I miss those 2 franchises.

i don't know why Bandai Namco made this game. Everytime I have someone play Gundam Extreme on my PS3, they get bored and don't like the game mechanics. If Bandai had just did some focus testing with random people they would've found that most people just don't like the game mechanics that much

The Gundam license is what makes the Gundam games popular in Japan..

Lol. I just installed this game on Steam, because the reviews said they made it a lot less p2w recently and the concept looked cool.

This is why you never pay for a F2P game. They eventually take the servers down and your purchases vanish into nothing.

@Soraxora: I haven't paid a cent for it. Plus imagine if you paid and built up a deck and then a clueless Blizzard nerfs it into oblivion, wasting the money you spent?

Like what happened this week.

@marc55: Which destroys an entire deck, rendering many cards you would have needed for that deck basically useless.

Yeah I tried the F2P Tekken and SC games, not very fun when you have to grind for hundreds of hours to get a fraction of what the full version counterparts provide (i.e TTT2, SC5).

Looking forward to Tekken 7 though.

I really wish more companies would understand that the F2P market is not in ANY way a guaranteed successful one. I want it to die a cold, lonely death if you ask me.

@Pyrosa: Rise of the incarnates wasn't on console.... It was on PC. On a side note hopefully they will stop trying to do fighting games with a F2P model.
