Now Playing: Prince Harry Wants Fortnite Banned - GS News Update

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex and sixth in line for the royal British crown, has sharply criticized the popular battle royale game Fortnite and called for it to be banned. The BBC reports that Harry's comments came at a YMCA event in London, just before the gaming BAFTA awards.

"[Fortnite] shouldn't be allowed," he said. "Where is the benefit of having it in your household? It's created to addict, an addiction to keep you in front of a computer for as long as possible. It's so irresponsible. It's like waiting for the damage to be done and kids turning up on your doorsteps and families being broken down." He also suggested that social media is "more addictive than alcohol and drugs."

These comments come as the Epic Games-developed title continues to grow in popularity; it's arguably the biggest game in the world, having become a cultural sensation. Epic recently announced that Fortnite had crossed 250 million registered players, with a new concurrent player record of 10.8 million players. It's still going strong despite increased competition from the likes of Black Ops 4's Blackout battle royale mode and Apex Legends. The surge in popularity for Apex has led to competition between the two battle royales, with Fortnite even adopting some of Apex's more popular features.

Prince Harry's comments come just after the World Health Organization (WHO) identified "gaming disorder" in its latest list of classified diseases. The disorder criteria list several qualities common among addictive traits, including impaired control over gaming, increased priority of gaming over the interests of daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite negative consequences.

These comments don't seem to indicate what it is about Fortnite in particular that is problematic, but the game's popularity probably played a role. It has had other recent strife with celebrities thanks to several lawsuits over its use of dances, which have been dropped for now. For more on Fortnite, check out our Season 8 challenge guide.

Said by person born with golden spoon in his mouth. Go hop on a pony and keep playing prince. Really. Kings, queens and princes are not of this time anymore.

Don't like to play Fortnite myself, but this joker should just stay in his castle dreaming about previous centuries. Pancake..

I get what he's saying but this is a cheap flamebait article to get clicks. Nothing good will come out of the comment section here and this site should find better news stories over ones that get people riled up over because of someones opinion on videogames.

If I ever feel I am getting addicted to video games, I just play Fortnite for a while to ease my addiction. Fortnite is just so boring.

I tend to think that Fortnite is a very problematic game. But then again, games themselves can be problematic if no one is stepping in to issue moderation. I just find it funny that governments try to step in and ban games, yet they'll still allow the sale of alcohol and tobacco. Those are addictions that cause serious damage..

When are the going to learn all of these separate addictions are the exact same thing? It's the same neural pathways being activated by different thing (drugs, sex, phones, social media, video games). Having all of these separate addictions is silly. What they should really be calling it is "things that are better than modern soulless life."

Fortnite is hot, steaming and unadulterated garbage.

Parents who dont supervise their kids tech use and blame Fortnite when their children turn into mouthbreathing, ADHD blank-faced drones are dangerous, delirious and far more responsible than the latest media sensation.

In other words, Ban shitty parents.

the people that are stating they want fortnite restricted are simply being angry and envious, everybody is this why you need fortnite gone on the grounds that every one of you are desirous in view of its major successfulness, well on the off chance that that is the situation, at that point imagine a scenario where you were a multibillionaire game producer making a ton of cash and afterward the entire world wants your successful game to be prohibited, I'm certain you wouldn't care for that right, so why the hell do you need fortnite to be prohibited, on the off chance that you don't care for it, at that point you probably don't play it, its as basic as that, and I think that it is truly dumb that you need it restricted, simply don't play the gosh dang game and dont disregard it, and for what reason are you people so against it, what has fortnite ever done to you, most likely the reason you scorn it is because that you don't have any wins and you're all PUBG lovers.

how about teaching your little shit 9 year old some moderation instead? Its a crap game but saying it should be banned is pretty stupid.

I will say that social media is more of a cancer than an addition. I disagree that social media platforms should be banned, but how about just being a responsible person and ignoring them, or using them in moderation? The problem with social media is more of problem with the human condition of wanting to know what other people are doing and comparing your life to theirs. Again just grow the **** up, and concern yourself with your own actions.

It's a shitty game, what is he on? There's really people addicted to that game? O_o

Anyway, first how about not allowing cigarettes and alcohol? That stuff can be addicting too, and it's like waiting until the damage comes. It's so irresponsible...

I don't think Fortnite is what's necessarily causing the addiction. Fortnite players were playing other games before and they'll play other games after. The problem is we've had this huge technology boom in the last 25 years and everyone is ignoring the negative aspects of it. Forget video games, people are just straight up addicted to looking at a monitor or a smartphone and being on the Web all the time. There are people out there who would go into panic mode and wouldn't know what to do with themselves if they had no Internet on a Saturday. My baby boomer parents can only do very basic things with a computer and they have no interest in owning a smartphone, but ever since they each got their own tablet, they spend their entire days on it. It does something to the chemicals in your brain and humans or society just didn't evolve to cope with that. Video games are just a more concentrated form of this, plus they bring a feeling of constant gratification that you don't get from living your day-to-day life. Social media messes you up as well. People need to be educated about not only the good that technology brings, but also the bad.

I don't play Fortnite, but am absolutely against banning it. Teach kids moderation. Let them see the consequences of failing their classes or not doing their chores, etc... Honestly, parents should... parent!

@Louis: 100% this. How are they going to be self reliant and exercise good judgment if they come up in a highly regulated environment? When they're on their own they won't know how to handle it.

I partly agree with him because I've seen first hand how addictive it can get for kids just like Pokemon but more costly. The real problem is not Fortnite but some parents who don't encourage their kids to go out and play.

Must be nice to have the cash to do absolutely anything you want while crapping on other peoples enjoyment at the expense of taxpayers . . .

Better yet what a childish outlook instead of banning said thing how about you condemn the parents for not getting involved ffs when did we stop having to parenting our children? People are so quick to blame anything but themselves these days -_-

I may sound like an old fart here (although I'm not old) but I think the real problem is more from people not being responsible in habits. The old saying "Everything in moderation" is still just as relevant today as anytime. And if you find it too addicting maybe you need to limit yourself or I would highly encourage you to please find people who can help you.

In the same way that gambling is monitored for addictive behaviors, I would not be opposed to games also providing suggestions to people that they want to reconsider their activities. Even if I found any warnings annoying, I would rather that happen than have those that seriously do need help be ignored.

I personally enjoy gaming, and gaming with friends and my kids in particular, but I have seen people, arguably very intelligent people, I know whose lives have been seriously hurt by their gaming habits and they needed someone to help them manage their habits better.

I taught at a high school a while back and Fortnite was one of the biggest challenges facing teachers competing for students' already-limited attention spans. Banning it from schools has done nothing, and since we can't confiscate cell phones, they're allowed to keep playing during class with impunity. Parents haven't done a damn thing to keep kids off their phones or consoles when they should be thinking about their coursework, and sensible regulation that would keep these devices out of the hands of impressionable youth is a pipedream in this political climate.

This Prince guy is right. These kids came to school every day exhibiting symptoms of someone who smoked a pound of pot before class--no attention span and little motivation to accomplish even the most reasonably simple tasks, and a glazed-over look that no 15 year old should have. It's fine if someone wants to game on the weekend or when all their work is finished, but kids are failing to meet even the bare minimum because of this Fortnite nonsense. Keep it out of schools, rate it AO, require age verification... whatever it takes. Just quit encouraging it.

@Firosen: So if the kids did not do their work or pass the tests, did you flunk them? I think that is a message that would get across. Otherwise I'm not sure why you couldn't ban phones in class? To be fair maybe your school doesn't back you up if you try and punish the kids. In that case the trouble is deeper than Fortnite.

@Louis: It's not the kids or the school. It's the parents who complain about $800 phones being confiscated that's made things the way they are now. And that's the problem--they're failing because of it, and there isn't a lot to be done about it. Alternative schools are barely funded in my state, so only the real hard cases get sent to those, and summer school does nothing if we can't get the phones out of the hands of these children. It's not that the problem is deep or conspiratorial, it's that no one will step in and say kids shouldn't have these things.

@Firosen: Thank you for the reply to me and the others. You are right that if the parents don't help, or tie your hands behind your back ("don't tell my kid what to do") that you are in a no-win situation. From your other replies, yes when I was young (I'm 60) if the teacher said it, we did it. No complaining. (Okay, we compained a little, but we did follow their instructions.)

To me though the issue is bigger than one game, so I wouldn't ban it. Anyone should be able to play it (young and old) but at the proper time. Unfortunately during class time is not the right time... :-(

@thomaswmak: Because we can't confiscate an expensive phone without parents causing a fuss. We can calmly ask the students to put away their phones as much as we like, but this isn't like the 90s where it was obvious a kid was playing a game. Phones are everywhere and kids are allowed to bring them as they please. None of the schools I attended in my youth would have tolerated this, but it's just the norm now and we're not allowed to go against it.

@Firosen: I didn't say confiscate, but teachers should be able to give detentions or suspend students for repeatedly playing games/disrupting class right? What reason do they have to take it out?

Seriously the educational system is a joke (I'm not pointing at you, just the system).

@edwardnygma: I doubt it. Jack Thompson is infamous for wanting to ban rap music and video games for example and said his views "conflicted with what he called the Bar's pro-gay, humanist, liberal agenda"

He's on the far right, trying to ban things, and blaming the liberals for not going along.

There can be idiots on any side of an argument and you can't paint things with a broad brush. Judge things on their own and not as part of some huge conspiracy.
