Baldur's Gate III a 'long-term goal' - Overhaul dev

Studio chief operating offer says he wants to make third core entry in role-playing game series, Kickstarter funding "makes so much sense."

The studio behind the upcoming enhanced editions of Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II wants to build Baldur's Gate III. But many events have to happen before the project sees the light of day, Overhaul Games has revealed to GameSpy.

Tofer wants to make Baldur's Gate III happen.
Tofer wants to make Baldur's Gate III happen.

"Baldur's Gate III has been our long-term goal," Overhaul Games chief operating officer Cameron Tofer said. "We have a lot of things to put in place before such a project can be launched. So currently there is no such project but that's the one we want to do. Our thoughts have been that Enhanced Edition for [Baldur's Gate] and [Baldur's Gate II] just make sense before there's any Baldur's Gate III."

As for how Tofer hopes to get Baldur's Gate III off the ground, he said using fan-funding service Kickstarter would be an effective course of action.

"We're totally thinking Kickstarter," he said. "It just makes so much sense and solves so many problems. I think what Brian [Fargo] is doing with Wasteland is very interesting."

The Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for Wasteland 2 reached its goal of $900,000 in just two days, and as of press time, it stands at over $1.37 million. That game is scheduled to arrive in October 2013.

The most high-profile Kickstarter game fund was Double Fine's campaign for its Double Fine Adventure game. In a record eight hours, the studio reached its $400,000 goal, ending last week at $3.3 million.

Would you support a Kickstarter fund for Baldur's Gate III? Let us know why in the comments section below.

Anything NOT made by EA is worth supporting! Well... most things, at least. Best to get others' hands on it before they're able to. And I think the fact that they have at least a couple/few people from the old team working on it is good enough. I would support it on Kickstart.

@weedman1985 Ok.... Baldur's Gate is probably one of the most epic, most interesting Western RPG's ever. But it was absolutely a product of it's time. No new gamers are going to slough through the aging mechanics and graphics to give this amazing game a shot. And some of us veterans. have played it so much, that a new coat of paint and some new content is the excuse we needed to go back to it. This will expose new gamers to what a really good party based, deep RPG is all about, and will certinaly keep me entertained through what will likely be my 4th playthrough of the Baldur's gate Series.

What these guys aren't realizing is that Kickstarter worked for Double Fine and Brian Fargo because they are proven developers, with a proven team behind them. That is why they are getting millions of dollars to develop with within days. But these guys are unproven. Sure, they worked at Bioware at one time, but they don't have the core team that worked on Baldur's Gate 1 or 2. The only thing these guys have on their itenerary is HD remakes of MDK and Baldur's Gate. Big, big risk giving money to them.

Would love to see a revamped (and new) BG2/3. Worth Kickstarting it for sure.

The question you should all be asking yourselves is why should you support it? there are only a handful of the original developers working on it. Besides, anyone who has any respect and love for his craft will not try to change his products no matter how "flawed" they are for the current age. These people don't seem to care, so why should I? Case to point, I will never support this project.

This is awesome, devs have my full support. Bioware doesn't seem to have any interest in the franchise and you never know what new life a developer composed of engrossed fans of the series will be capable of putting out. Give it a chance.

@EXODYS Uhm, a lot of the people involved with the Baldur's Gate series ARE part of beamdog.

Meh, the story is complete, don't touch it. Besides, if anyone should ever make a Baldur's Gate III it should be the original developers.

@azureblade89 Not going to happen ever. Besides Bio does not have all the old crew who worked the BG series. Id see more like Obsidian, but this is up to Atari and WoTC. Pity we cant kickstart Alines RPG or Alpha Protocol 2 (without annoying bugs ofc).

@ azureblade89 Uhm... may I remind you of Dragon Age II? If Bioware gets its hands on it they'll turn it into Massdur's Gate 3 with extra Kinect!

Sure would support it, but they have big shoes to fill in.Then there is the fact that ToB tied most of the loose ends, better then certain other space opera. I suppose they could take another minor bhaal spawn, but when would it take place? At 4th Ed or 5th timeline? I can list games that would get 100% Kickstarter support. Planscape torment Temple of Elemental Evil

I'd possibly support it, but I'd want to see more specifics as to why they need a Kickstarter to fund it and what they would use the funding for.
