Baldur's Gate III a 'long-term goal' - Overhaul dev

Studio chief operating offer says he wants to make third core entry in role-playing game series, Kickstarter funding "makes so much sense."

The studio behind the upcoming enhanced editions of Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II wants to build Baldur's Gate III. But many events have to happen before the project sees the light of day, Overhaul Games has revealed to GameSpy.

Tofer wants to make Baldur's Gate III happen.
Tofer wants to make Baldur's Gate III happen.

"Baldur's Gate III has been our long-term goal," Overhaul Games chief operating officer Cameron Tofer said. "We have a lot of things to put in place before such a project can be launched. So currently there is no such project but that's the one we want to do. Our thoughts have been that Enhanced Edition for [Baldur's Gate] and [Baldur's Gate II] just make sense before there's any Baldur's Gate III."

As for how Tofer hopes to get Baldur's Gate III off the ground, he said using fan-funding service Kickstarter would be an effective course of action.

"We're totally thinking Kickstarter," he said. "It just makes so much sense and solves so many problems. I think what Brian [Fargo] is doing with Wasteland is very interesting."

The Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for Wasteland 2 reached its goal of $900,000 in just two days, and as of press time, it stands at over $1.37 million. That game is scheduled to arrive in October 2013.

The most high-profile Kickstarter game fund was Double Fine's campaign for its Double Fine Adventure game. In a record eight hours, the studio reached its $400,000 goal, ending last week at $3.3 million.

Would you support a Kickstarter fund for Baldur's Gate III? Let us know why in the comments section below.

While I loved the BG games to death and still play it even now from time to time, I'm kind of on the fence about a BG3. On the one hand, i wanna go "take my money". On the other hand, how would BG3 logically be approached. ToB pretty much had a conclusive ending. To make a BG3 means the story would probably either feel tacked on or they would have to alter the original slightly. Also by the end of ToB, your characters were at such crazy high levels, they would probably have to (and should anyways) alter the level progression. We'll see i guess

Here's the thing, WotC is getting ready to launch D&D5e, and a BG3 title would be the PERFECT occasion to do it. Coincidence? Yeah, right. There's no real reason to do another BG, the story of the Bhaal spawn is concluded. Why not try a new IP? To cash in on the name of course. So will this Baldur's Gate 3 live up to its predecessors? Not likely.

I wonder with Kickstarter if gaming companies will continue to nickle and dime the consumers?

First things first. I have every intention of buying Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition. I'll even preorder it if possible. But I'll judge that before making a decision on Baldur's Gate 2 Enhanced Edition. Of course, if I like the first one, I'll certainly buy the second one, and if I'll also be willing to put some money in on Baldur's Gate 3.

Kind of glad Bioware isn't making it. Just imagine how Dragon Age 2ish it would be because of EA lol.

Played the hell out of Baulders Gate games. Don't know if I want to play it again just because the graphics have been updated. I would instantly buy a game called Baulders Gate 3, as long as it isn't a sequel to the console versions.

yes, see the reaction to one and two. If it does well, then start the fund raiser. I'll be honest, if the fund raiser started right now I'd contribute to it anyway. I miss good videogame d&d. Roll the dice to see if I'm getting drunk.

*jaw drops* I recently played through the Baldur's Gate series; back when I was truly proud to call myself a BioWare fan. I'll wait and see what Overhaul can do with the original games before I elevate my hopes though. Still, I can't wait to see what they can do with the established universe. @EXODYS - Agreed. I would love for the original team to be apart of the development process...minus EA of course.

I knew it. They are using the enhanced editions as a testing groud to how well it is going to be recieved. Smart thinking. I believe they are up to it. SO far they only remade old games, SO I don't know how skilled they are at coming up with their own ideas, but seeing how Black Isle was disbanded and BioWare (Now ScumWare) has gone Haywire, Beamdog is quite literally our last chance. Wishing them luck.

Don't bother with BG3 unless you have an epic story to tell and gameplay to match. Otherwise, you'll just screw up a classic. Also, don't let this be a Steam or EA/Origin exclusive. Just a disk check is fine.

@pigginpete I know that you can't take my word for it because I'm not a developer, but this isn't something I have just made up. The budgets do indeed allow for a proper old school RPG. In fact, I will direct you to the kickstarter page so you can watch the video and read up on it for yourself. << LINK REMOVED >> The project is headed by Brian Fargo. I'm sure a veteran like you would remember his immense contribution to our hobby. I highly doubt that he is lying about the amount of money required to make a game of the same scale and depth as we had back in the golden age of gaming. I don't believe a person of his stature and fame would decieve his followers, especially since his company is in a tight spot. This isn't EA, after all. Besides, if anything, he is a competent developer. I suggest you read the page and watch the short film. I'm fairly certain it will convince you to contribute at least a measly sum of $15; A fair price for a game that might turn out to be just as great as Fallout 1, don't you think? :)

Let them finish the remakes, see what made the originals so awesome and then they can start on 3. I would support a kickstarter for this company if and only if they do justice to the remakes, so lets see what they can do first.

@weedman1985 All right that makes the whole kickstarter thing a lot more easier to swallow if that's the case. You can't however compare budgets for games 15+ years ago to today. It might be cheap to whip up a BG3 in the infinity engine or something similar, but inflation, production standards and higher salaries in general are going to require a lot more than a handful of million a kickstarter might raise to produce a game up to gamer of today's standards. Personally I'd be fine with a BG3 in infinity engine, where majority of funds are going towards good writers and content, but no one save for a few us would end up buying it.

There you have it people. People said I was paranoid for thinking that companies would use Kickstarter to fund AAA titles and make them cheaper and profit off of your fan loyalty. You don't think this company can afford to make a Baldurs Gate 3? Wrong. I told you so people, now they will use you to make games cheaper to produce and profit off of you. Give a foot and they will take a mile. Don't get me wrong, I'm ecstatic that there's a Baldur Gate 3 being produced in the future. As a fellow gamer though I can't in good conscience let them walk all over you and not say anything.

I added my contribution to Wasteland 2 two days ago. It felt great to know that I'm part of the creation of a new masterpiece (crossing my fingers). There are still 28 days to go, so don't be shy and take a look. I hope BG3 will be a reality too. BG1 and BG2 are amazing.

Re-releasing BG and BG2 aren't going to generate that much money. This company will be lucky to recoop costs, especially with the royalties involved. The mechanics of those games are dated and hard to play today. A mechanic style similar to that of say Dragon Age or Mass Effect would be more suited to a reboot of the BG series now. In addition, since D&D is a Wizards product, the producers are probably stuck with whatever D&D rules edition is currently published. Wizards really lost my interest in D&D with ruleset 3.

@pigginpete I think you were a bit misinformed. If you pledge your money for the kickstarter project, you have basically paid for the game. It's the same as preordering it, only you have the chance to give an opinion on how you want the game to be. Secondly, we are talking about the same budgets they used almost 20 years ago when they made Fallout, BG, Planescape, etc. Wasteland 2 has already accumulated the budget of Fallout1. Thing is, a lot has changed in the past few decades, and it costs significantly less money to make the same games in scale and quality as it did 20 years ago, due to the evolution of technology, programming algorithms, etc. So technically, you can make a game of the same quality or even greater. As for BG, I don't trust Beamdog either. I shall wait and see what comes out of their overhaul project before I pay them anything.

I would buy Baldur's Gate III for the Wii U, and then I would play online co-op through the story. We aren't sitting right next to each other in a computer lab anymore like when we played the original games, so we need voice chat and comminity features.

BG2 is my favourite game of all time. That being said, I'm getting kind of tired of this kickstarter bandwagon that's being set in motion. Pay money so someone can make a game you're going to pay money for. And still the amount of money you can raise is probably not even close to enough to put out a professional high quality product like the games you grew to love and are the reason you would donate in the first place. Sorry, I'm not going to donate money so a couple of guys that used to work on BG can fiddle around with the next BG installment and sour the whole series.

I kinda am scared with the gaming industry nowadays, especially sequels. Look at Dungeon Siege III. Look at Stronghold III. Look at Bioware. They had a great formula with Dragon Age and look what it turned out to be with Dragon Age 2. My point is, games are changing. Game makers now focus more on graphical style and cinematic experience instead of game depth and complexity. If the new Baldur's Gate would come up like this... I would suicide.

@Kinthalis DA II wasn't really that bad .... I'll even give it a 6/10 for a stand alone game(which isn't really the quality of a bioware game) but as a successor to DA:O(which is the spiritual successor to BG) I'll be merciful to give it a 1/10

I'd rather fund for a better Mass Effect 3 ending. As long as BioWare still has it's copyright on the Baldur's Gate Brand and EA sees another possibilty for money r**e I'd NEVER EVER give them eve a single cent. If not and they indeed live up to BG I & II then hell yes I'd fund!

I dont think that I would donate to a Baladur's Gate three kickstart game per say. While I fully support the notion of bypassing distribution arms like EA or Activision, we have yet to see how the first two Kickstarts will turn out. I want more assurance that there will be a finished product. It would also depend on how they plan to do it. I am not really interested in supporting another 1st person style game.

Me personally, no, i wouldn't --because i have no money. Also, like they said, while it is their goal, there's no point in pursuing the issue until both them as creators of this project and us as players - new and old fans of the series - see, understand and like what the enhanced editions of Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II will bring.

@Kinthalis "No new gamers are going to slough through the aging mechanics and graphics to give this amazing game a shot" Well, sucks for them. And what do you mean by ancient mechanics? that was the whole point of the game - the gameplay (and story to a slightly lesser extent). If you enjoy modern game mechanics, then it's your opinion. I personally don't. I don't understand why it bothers you so much. There are very few people in this industry whom I trust to make old-school games, and Beamdog has not proven itself to me as a competent studio yet. I highly doubt that it ever will, judging by the fact that they wanna change BG to appeal to kids these days. That doesn't exactly inspire confidence, if you know what I mean.
