Baldur's Gate 3 Dev Apologizes, Pledges To Avoid Another Broken Patch

The recent Hotfix 4 caused crashes and revealed a bumpy path for patches that will hopefully be avoided in the future.

Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian is revamping its patch deployment process after a recent hiccup. The studio had to retract Hotfix 4 due to crashes, temporarily locking players out of saves made during the update.

Addressing the situation, Larian conveyed in an update on Steam, "We recognize the frustration caused by this and want to apologize. That's why we're changing things up… Hotfix 4 went through a rigorous QA pipeline and was confirmed for release. However, a last-minute version number change led to compiler corruption, causing unexpected crashes."

To prevent future incidents, the studio pledged, "Any change to future versions will undergo our comprehensive QA pipeline, including in-house QA, automated and unit testing, and save-game compatibility testing."

Baldur's Gate 3 has already received substantial hotfixes post-launch, with a major patch in the works. Some issues, like missing gnome underpants, were trivial, while others, such as a save-corrupting bug, were more significant. Another major patch is planned, set to incorporate community requests, possibly including mid-game character appearance changes.

PlayStation 5 owners anticipate a smoother experience upon Baldur's Gate 3's general release on September 6. The Digital Deluxe edition can preload August 31 at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET, and early access for this version of the game starts on September 2 at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET. The Digital Deluxe edition also comes with a variety of in-game extras like the Divinity Bard song pack, a dice theme, and the Treasures from Rivellon pack, among other items.
