Avengers: Infinity War Originally Had An Epic 45-Minute Scene That Explained A Key Detail

Thanos creator Jim Starlin says Marvel Studios opted to axe the scene just a month before the movie came out.

It has come to light that Marvel Studios reportedly filmed a lengthy scene for 2018's Avengers: Infinity War that didn't make the final cut. It would have seemingly shown a notable event that happens off-screen. The scene in question involves Thanos (Josh Brolin) and how he came to obtain the first Infinity Stone.

The film doesn't explain how Thanos already has the first stone when the movie kicks off, but this scene would have dug into that lore. Thanos creator Jim Starlin told Near Mint Condition that Marvel Studios filmed a 45-minute scene that depicted Thanos laying waste to Xandar to obtain the Power Stone.

The scene was ultimately left on the cutting room floor, and viewers were left to understand that Thanos obtained the stone off-screen. 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy saw the superhero team obtain the stone and give it to Nova Corps for safe-keeping, but that didn't go to plan.

Starlin said in the interview that co-director Joe Russo reached out to him about a month before Infinity War came out, telling him the lengthy scene that would have started the movie was cut.

"There was a whole sequence of him getting the first gem and they had to cut that out. They shot it, but they never wanted to spend the money on the effects and they didn't want the movie to be as long as the second one [Endgame] was. They didn't realize it was going to be quite the hit it was," Starlin said (via Collider).

In the end, Thanos obtained the six Infinity Stones, lodged them into his gauntlet, and used the power therein for his plan to snap his fingers and wipe out half of the universe. He succeeded, but The Avengers did some silly multiverse movie magic and undid this action.

The next MCU movie is May's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is part of MCU Phase 5.
