Avengers: Endgame Is Going To Be Very Long, And Marvel Is OK With That

It's so exciting you might not get up to pee.

Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo have reaffirmed that the current cut of the much-anticipated film is three hours long; the editing process isn't over yet, but it appears Endgame will end up being the longest Marvel movie ever.

Asked by Collider if Marvel and Disney are OK with Endgame running for as long as Titanic, the Russo brothers said Marvel/Disney are "down with what the best story is," even at three hours.

Now Playing: Avengers: Endgame Is Going To Be A Very Long Movie - GameSpot Universe News Update

Endgame is so long because it's said to wrap up a story that started 22 movies ago. Not only that, but extra time is required for scenes to allow the film to deliver emotional resonance, they said.

"Right now, we think the movie is playing well and we've had great responses from our test audiences and we're feeling very good about where it is," they said. "We're still doing work to it. We're not done with it. Again, this is a culmination film of 22 movies, it's a lot of storytelling to work into it. Emotion is an intrinsic part of that to us. When you have to tell a really complicated story and you want strong emotional moments with the characters, it just requires a certain amount of real estate. This one, in particular, feels like three hours worth of real estate."

They added that in the four screenings for test audiences so far, not one person has left their chair to use the bathroom.

For comparison, Avengers: Infinity War was already a long movie, running for two hours and 40 minutes.

Endgame hits theatres in the US on April 26. A new trailer for it was shown during the Super Bowl this weekend; for more, check out GameSpot's Endgame trailer breakdown in the video embed above. The movie will be preceded by one other Marvel film, Captain Marvel, which releases in March.

There seems to be a lot of movies coming out where there's a ton of material that gets cut. Last Jedi was like a 4 hour movie that had important stuff cut out, like the last scene with Phasma. So many movies just feel empty and rushed, even if they're over 2 hours long. So what I'm saying is leave it all in, guys! This movie deserves to not have anything cut out simply for time. Pacing is important, and sometimes that actually entails making stuff longer instead of shorter.

@Brettsky128: Yeah are way too many movies that gets cut to hell trying to hit that silly 2 hour mark. Some movies just needs much more time to develop the characters and the story....

That being said, they should have cut everything in The Last Jedi and just made something better.

@Brettsky128: BvS was meant to be a 4 hour film too. Man of steel had stuff cut too and basically every DC movie except WW and Aquaman. The main reason this happens is because movie suits force movies to be cut for audience viewing and more frequent sessions.

@andfx8: You mean like say. . . an intermission? They used to be pretty common then hollywood got obsessed with keeping movies under two hours.

@The_Game_Savant: Last movie I remember that had an intermission was The Right Stuff. Not saying there weren't any after that, it was just the last I remember having one.

I can't remember the last time I left my seat to go to the bathroom during a movie. Then again I don't go to the movies much.

Infinity War just wasn’t very good. I hope this one is better, but I’m going in with super low expectations.

@justthetip: It was much better than Black Panther, though.

@Elranzer: Right? It was good, but not as good as it was made out to be.

@justthetip: It was good as a giant crossover, but bad as a standalone film... Which makes it mediocre in the end?

i dont see how jump from 2 to 3 suddenly makes a movie insanely long. if anything its relative because many 90 minite movies are just too long because theyre terrible

@santinegrete: This I don't understand. There's "might not get up to pee" long...and that's fine if the movie is good. But there's no such thing as "couldn't wait for it to end" long. Rather, what you shoudl be saying is that the movie was "I got the f-ck up and left" long. For me, that was EVERY Transformers movie (altho I didn't see them in the theater...I just turned them the hell off haha). Bay literally took a classic great IP from the cartoon movies and put it in a blender with feces and pig spooge.

@esqueejy: saw it in my house. Transformers was pretty big for me as a kid and I expected the movie had some bad parts but reedemed itself at the end. Now, this 'not a real virtue' didn't happen either. :(
