The Avengers are assembling on consoles after all. Ubisoft today confirmed that it is developing The Avengers: Battle for Earth for Kinect-equipped Xbox 360s and the Wii U.

Up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, it's…! Oops. My mistake, it was a bird.

According to an Associated Press report, the game will make heavy use of those systems' motion control capabilities. As for the story, it will feature about 20 characters from the Marvel Universe with a focus on Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor. While those are the lead characters from the recently released blockbuster film The Avengers, Ubisoft's game will actually be based on the comic series. Battle for Earth will be inspired by the Secret Invasion storyline, in which the shape-shifting alien Skrulls activate sleeper agents who have been living among humanity undetected for years.

Explaining the choice to go with motion controls for The Avengers: Battle for Earth, Ubisoft VP of sales and marketing Tony Key told the Associated Press, "This is the perfect type of game for that because these characters are very action oriented. They're always fighting and throwing things."

No release date has been announced for The Avengers: Battle for Earth, but Ubisoft will reveal more about the game at next month's Electronic Entertainment Expo.
